TEST 4 PHYSICS

CHAPTER:4

MAXIMUM MARKS: 35 TIME ALLOWED: 1 hr. 30 minutes

1. Answer the following: (1x5 = 5 marks)
a. A proton beam projected along +ve z axis, experiences a force along the Y-axis
due to a magnetic field. What is the direction of magnetic field?
b. A proton moves north to south in a region where uniform electric field is
perpendicularly upwards. What should be the direction of uniform magnetic field
in the same region, if proton moves undeflected through the region?
c. A long straight wire in the horizontal plane carries a current in the east to we st
direction. What is the direction of magnetic field B at a point north of the wire.
d. For an observer facing west the current in the circular coil is anticlockwise. What
is the direction of magnetic field at the centre?
e. A straight wire is carrying current from north to south. In which direction a
magnetic field must be applied to make the wire stationary in air?
2. Define each of the following: (1x5 = 5 marks)
a. One tesla
b. One ampere
c. Current sensitivity of a galvanometer
d. Voltage sensitivity of a galvanometer
e. Biot savart’s law

(2 Marks questions)
3. An alpha particle and a deutron enter the same uniform magnetic field
perpendicularly with the same kinetic energy. What is the ratio of the radius of the
paths followed by the two?
4. Two identical circular loops P and Q each of radius r and carrying currents are lying
in parallel planes such that they have common axis passing through O. The direction
of current in P is anticlockwise and in Q is clockwise as seen from O which is
equidistant from both loops. Find the magnetic field at point O.
5. A closely wound solenoid 80 cm long has 5 layers of windings of 400 turns each.
The diameter of the solenoid is 1.8 cm. If the current carried is 8 A, estimate the
magnitude of magnetic field inside the solenoid near its centre.
6. A long straight wire AB carrier a current of 4 A. A proton P travels at 4 x10 6 m/s,
parallel to the wire, 0.2 m from it as shown. Calculate the force experienced by the
proton. Also specify the direction of force.

7. Two wires which connect the battery of an automobile to its starting motor carry a
current of 300 A. what is the force per unit length between the wires if they are 70cm
long and 1.5cm apart? Is the force attractive or repulsive?
(3 marks questions)
8. A charged particle of mass m, charge moving at a uniform velocity v, enters a
uniform magnetic field B, acting normal to the plane of paper. Deduce expression for
the
(i) Radius of circular path
(ii) Kinetic energy of the particle
9. Derive an expression for the torque on the rectangular coil of area A, carrying a
current I, and placed in a rectangular magnetic field B. The angle between the
direction of magnetic field and vector perpendicular to the plane is θ.
10.
(A) What is the importance of radial magnetic field in a moving coil
galvanometer?
(B) What is the function of soft iron cylinder between the poles of a galvanometer?
(C) Why do we prefer phosphor bronze alloy for the suspension wire of a moving coil
galvanometer?
11.
(a) Increasing the current sensitivity of a moving coil galvanometer may not
necessarily increase the voltage sensitivity of the galvanometer. Justify?
(b) Why a moving coil galvanometer cannot be used as an ammeter as such?
12. A uniform current I is flowing through a cylinder of radius R through its
cross section. Use ampere’s law to find the expression for magnetic field due
to this current:
(a) Outside the cylinder
(b) On the surface
(c) Inside the cylinder
Draw the variation of magnetic field with the distance from its centre.
