Assignment: Biot-Savart Law and Circular loop

1. A current of 10A is flowing from east to west in a long straight wire kept on a horizontal table. The
magnetic field developed at a distance of 10 cm due to north on the table is:(CBSE 2020)
(a) 2 x 10-5T, acting downwards (c) 4 x 10-5T, acting downwards
(b) 2 x 10-5T, acting upwards (d) 4 x 10-5T, acting upwards

2. A current I flows through a long straight conductor which is bent into a circular
loop of radius R in the middle as shown in the figure. (CBSE 2020)

The magnitude of the net magnetic field at point O will be

𝜇0 𝐼
(a) Zero (c)
4𝜋𝑅
(b) (1 + 𝜋)
𝜇0𝐼
𝜇0𝐼 (1 1
2𝑅 (d) − )
2𝑅 𝜋

3. Two small identical circular coils marked 1, 2 carry equal

currents and are placed with their geometric axes
perpendicular to each other as shown in fig.

Derive an expression for the resultant magnetic field at O.

4. A rectangular loop of metallic wire is of length a and breadth b
and carries a current I. find the
magnitude of magnetic field at the centre O of the loop.

5. An electron current I is flowing through an infinitely long

conductor bent into the form as shown in fig. Find the
magnitude and direction of magnetic field at the centre of the
semi-circular part of the conductor.

6. Two very small identical circular loops (1) & (2)

carrying equal current I are placed vertically as show
in the figure. Find the magnitude & direction of the
net magnetic field produced at the point O.

7. Two identical wire P & Q each of radius R and

carrying current I are kept in ⊥ plane, such that they
have a common center. Find the magnitude & the
direction of net magnetic field at the common 8. Two coaxial loop L1 and L2 of radii 3 cm and 4 cm
centre of the two coils. are placed as shown . What should be the
magnitude and direction of the current in the loop
L2 so that the net magnetic field at the point O be
zero ? Ans 0.56 A
9. A current carrying loop is free to turn in a uniform magnetic field B. Under what condition will the
torque acting on it be (i) minimum & (ii) maximum?
10. Write the factors by which sensitivity of a galvanometer can be increased.
11. A charge q moving along the x-axis with a velocity 𝑉 ⃗ is subjected to a uniform magnetic field B acting
along the z-axis as it crosses the origin O
(a) Trace the trajectory
(b) Does the change gain kinetic energy as it enters the magnetic field . Justify?

12. A proton and a deuteron, each moving with velocity v⃗ enter simultaneously in the region of magnetic
field B⃗ acting normal to the direction of velocity. Trace their trajectories establishing the relationship
between the two.

13. A particle of mass 5 × 10-3 kg and charge 4 µC enters into a uniform electric field of 2 × 105 NC-1,
moving with a velocity of 30 ms-1 in a direction opposite to that of the field. Calculate the distance it
would travel before coming to rest. ( Ans a = 160m/s2, 2.81 m)

14. A square shaped plane coil of area 100 cm2 of 200 turns carries a steady current of 5A. It is placed in a
uniform magnetic field of 0.2 T acting perpendicular to the plane of the coil. Calculate the torque on the
coil when its plane makes an angle of 60° with the direction of the field. In which orientation will the
coil be in stable equilibrium? [ Ans 1Nm, parallel to magnetic field]
15. A square loop of side 20 cm carrying current of 1A is kept near an infinite long straight wire carrying a
current of 2A in the same plane as shown in the figure. Calculate the magnitude and direction of the net
