Il primo che introdusse la tela da navi colorata nei teatri fu, per
testimonianza di Plinio [403], Q. Catulo, allorquando dedicò il
Campidoglio. Questa tela parve troppo rozza a Lentulo Spinter, e nei
giuochi apollinari, come scrive il citato autore, usò per primo nel
teatro vele di finissimo lino: «Carbasina deinde vela primus in theatro
duxisse traditur Lentulus Spinter apollinaribus ludis» [404]. Ed infine lo
stesso Plinio ci attesta che Nerone adornò le vele con ricami d’oro:
Vela nuper colore caeli stellata per rudentes, terra etiam in
amphitheatris principis Neronis rubente» [405].
Sembra che i velarî ordinariamente s’incominciassero a stendere in
primavera. L’apprendiamo da due avvisi, scoperti in Pompei, scritti in
caratteri rossi, nel primo dei quali Numerio Popidio Rufo notificava al
pubblico che egli il 29 d’Ottobre avrebbe dato in quella città una
caccia, e che il 29 di Aprile l’anfiteatro sarebbe stato coperto con
velario. L’altro avviso fu scoperto sulla Via degli Augustali [406].
Relativamente alla struttura del velario, non s’ha a credere che
questa sia una cosa tanto facile ad immaginarsi come comunemente
si ritiene. Fino a pensare che vi dovè essere un’armatura,
probabilmente di corde, costituita da duecento quaranta raggi, che
partendo dalle travi verticali andassero a rannodarsi ad un ovale
centrale più o meno ampio, non vi si trova difficoltà. Ma se si rifletta
che il peso dei canapi, delle carrucole, delle tende e delle corde che
servivano per tirarle, avrebbe fatto necessariamente calare, e non
poco, l’ovale centrale, e fatto rimanere il velario pendente in basso,
producendo un pessimo effetto ed una disgustosa soffocazione negli
spettatori del portico; siamo costretti a ricercar il modo con cui
avranno gli antichi cercato di evitare quello sconcio.
Per ottenere lo scopo, si dovea far sì che l’ovale, e quindi i raggi
fossero, per quanto era fisicamente possibile, orizzontalmente tesi:
in questo caso le tende, attaccate per un capo all’ovale e fissato per
l’altro al disopra dell’attico del porticato, avrebbero formato un dolce
padiglione dall’alto in basso, producendo un gradevole effetto.
Questa tensione (che dovea essere fortissima, a cagione del non
intercedere tra il piano delle testate delle travi e quello dell’attico del
colonnato spazio maggiore di tre metri) non si sarebbe potuta
ottenere che per mezzo di verricelli, i quali agissero su ciascuno dei
duecento quaranta raggi.
Il Canina saggiamente opinò che alle travi esterne ne
corrispondessero altre all’interno dell’edificio, onde ottenere
maggiore resistenza. Erano esse necessariamente collegate insieme
per mezzo di traverse, formando tutto un sistema. Ce l’assicura
Calpurnio: «Vidimus in coelum trabibus spectacula textis»:
traduce il Biondi.
Alle testate delle travi interne erano fissate robuste carrucole, a fin di
mandare verticalmente le funi ad arrotolarsi ai verricelli orizzontali, i
sostegni dei quali poggiavano sul pavimento del portico, ed erano
assicurati con arpioni alla parete di perimetro dell’Anfiteatro.
È bene qui notare che le testate delle travi che sostenevano il soffitto
del portico e il soprapposto pavimento, oltre ad essere incassate
nella cortina del muro di perimetro, poggiavano sopra solidi
mensoloni; e questo dimostra che quelle testate dovevano
sopportare un peso maggiore di quello d’un soffitto e di un
pavimento.
Sorge una difficoltà, ed è che qualora si volesse supporre l’ovale
centrale non di altra materia che di canapo, sarebbe stata cosa ben
difficile fargli prendere e mantenere la sua forma regolare.
A rimediare a quest’inconveniente, si potrebbe immaginare l’ovale
centrale formato di una zona orizzontale di piastra metallica, di una
sufficiente consistenza e del minor peso possibile; immaginandone
inoltre la periferia esterna non maggiore di quanto era necessario
per attaccarvi le duecento quaranta funi, e (perchè la sua massa
fosse relativamente minima) composta di due fasce riunite a
traliccio. A questa zona metallica si sarebbero fissati duecento
quaranta anelli, onde attaccarvi gli uncini legati ai capi dei canapi.
