dimensions over 10 meters
Worksheet 2
Task: Read through the section Obtaining measurements, then complete the following.
1 Using the conversion examples shown in the table, convert the measurements in the
exercise below from millimetres to metres and metres to millimetres respectively.
Conversion examples
100s of mm in m 10s of mm in m Individual mm in m
Exercise
Convert from millimetres to metres Convert from metres to millimetres
75 mm = 0.075 m 33.005 m = 33 005 mm
1650 mm = 1.650 m 2.225 m = 2 225 mm
12500 mm = 12.500 m 0.556 m = 556 mm
5 mm = 0.005 m 1.200 m = 1 200 mm
12 mm = 0.012 m 0.955 m = 955 mm
750 mm = 0.750 m 0.010 m = 10 mm
2225 mm = 2.225 m 0.9 m = 900 mm
5000 mm = 5.000 m 12.5 m = 12 500 mm
556 mm = 0.556 m 57 m = 57 000 mm
33005 mm = 33.005 m 3.45 m = 3 450 mm

c N (Newtons)
d kg (kilograms)
Worksheet 3
Task: Read through the section Performing calculations, then complete the following.
Worked example:
How many fence posts, 2.7 m apart, would be needed to build a fence 20.0 m long across the
front garden of a house, and what would be the total cost if each post costs $6.50?
length of fence
No. of fence posts 1(always include the formula first )
post spacing
20.0
1
2.7
7.4,say 8 1 9
Cost No.of posts 3 rate/post
9 6.50
= $68.50
1 If there is a 75 × 50 hardwood top and bottom rail in this fence to connect the posts, how
many 5.4 m long lengths of timber rail are needed to build the fence?
2 500
20 000
2 What will be the cost of the fence rail material if 75 × 50 hardwood is $2.85 per metre?
3 If the timber palings on the fence are 1500 mm long × 100 mm wide, how many palings
will be required to cover the fence?
No. of palings = Length of Fence Paling width = 20.000m 0.100m = 200 palings
4 Surface area
The flat surface of a skillion roof is 24.0 m long with a rafter length of 12.0 m. If a 12.0 m length of
corrugated iron roof sheeting covers a width of 762 mm, how many sheets are required to cover
the roof?
No. of sheets = Length of Roof cover width = 24.000m 0.762 = 31.496 sheets
As we cannot order 0.496 (say ½ width of a sheet) we need to round up
Therefore 31.496 sheets becomes 32 sheets

24 000
5 If the corrugated iron costs $1.75 per square metre, how much would it cost to sheet the
roof when each actual sheet width is 820 mm?
Cost = [Length of sheets x Sheet width x Number of sheets] x Cost per square metre
= [12.000m x 0.820m x 32 sheets] x $1.75 / m2
= [314.88 m2] x $1.75 / m2
= $551.04 Say $551.05
6 In the back garden, how many panels of treated pine lattice 2.4 m × 1.2 m would be
required to build a fence 32.0 m long by 1.2 m high to keep the dog off the vegetable
patch?
32 000
7 If each lattice panel costs $3.85 per square metre, how much will it cost to buy panels for
the back garden fence?
Cost = [Length of panel x Width x Number of panels] x Cost per square metre
= [2.400m x 1.200m x 14 panels] x $3.85 / m2
= [40.320 m2] x $3.85 / m2
= $155.23 Say $155.25
8 A luxury mansion has a semicircular stenciled concrete drive that is 3.0 m wide. The inside
radius is 17.0 m and the outside radius is 20.0 m. How many metres of edge board would
be required to form the drive?
3 000 17 000
TOTAL for edge board = ‘A’ + ‘B’ + ‘C’ = 62.832 m + 53.407 m + 6.000 m
= 122.239 m
9 Volume
Calculate the volume of soil to be removed from a trench for a sewer pipe. The trench is
25.0 m long by 800 mm deep by 450 mm wide.
10 Calculate the volume of sand a drainer will require to lay a bed 150 mm deep for the
length of the trench.
11 If a cubic metre of filling sand costs $28.00, how much will the sand cost for the bed under
the sewer pipe?
13 How much will the timber cost if unseasoned hardwood is $240.00 per cubic metre?
Worksheet 4
Task: Read through the section Estimating approximate quantities, then complete the following.
1 Brickwork
Calculate the number of bricks in a single-skin wall 8.5 m long by 1.8 m high, when there is
an average of 50 bricks per square metre.
2 How much will it cost to purchase the bricks if they are $965.00 per 1000?
3 Calculate the quantity of bricks in a solid 230-mm thick front fence that is 15.0 m long by
900 mm high, when there is an average of 50 bricks per metre squared per skin of
brickwork.
4 Concrete
A house has a portico entrance with two grand round columns supporting the roof. The
columns are 600 mm in diameter and 4.95 m high. How much concrete would be required
to build them?
5 How much will the concrete for the portico cost when concrete costs $247.00 / m3
(including GST) delivered to the site?
6 The bricklayer is building a fishpond that has a diameter of 3.6 m in. Before placing the
brickwork, he needs to pour a circular concrete slab with a base 125 mm thick. How much
concrete will be required?
0 125
3 600
7 The home owner has a number of ornamental garden statues to be placed around the
garden on six triangular prism-shaped plinths. The height of the plinths is 1.2 m and the
triangular-shaped ends have a base of 500 mm and a perpendicular height of 433 mm.
How much concrete will be required to make the bases?
8 To build piers to support the floor of a house, the builder must excavate 24 pier holes
400 mm × 400 mm × 550 mm deep. How much soil must be removed?
9 If the builder places concrete 450 mm deep in the pier holes from Question 8, how much
concrete will be required?
10 What will be the total cost to excavate and then pour the concrete for the pier holes from
Question 8 if the cost to excavate each hole is $12.00, the cost of the concrete (refer to
Question 9) is $245.00 per cubic metre (including GST) and a labourer is required for 3
hours to pour the concrete at $26.00 per hour?
Worksheet 5
Task: Read through the section Calculations of various solid shapes up to and including
Percentages/fractions, then complete the following.
5 A carpenter has to lay 3550 m of wall-lining boards onto timber studs. Determine how
many metres of lining boards the carpenter needs to order if there is a waste allowance of
10% added on.
6 An excavator has to load loose soil taken from a trench. The soil has an in situ volume of
2.112m3 but takes up more volume when bulking allowance of 25% is added. Determine
the full amount of volume to be loaded onto a truck.
Bulking is the expansion of excavated material to a volume greater than that of the excavation
from which it came; this is generally due to the inclusion of voids or air gaps in the material. For
example, if you dig a hole in clay soil and then try to replace all the material back into the hole.
You will find that it will not all fit back into the hole, there will be a mound of material sitting
over the top.
