Instruction for collection and

disinfection of infectious healthcare
waste with the
MEDISTER 10 device

MEDISTER 10 is designed exclusively for disinfection of moist (moistened)

waste and liquids.

MEDISTER is the ideal disinfection device for laboratory waste, blood bags, drainage
systems, and filled or empty tubes (e.g. dialysis systems with dialyzers, etc.) The
residual moisture in used tubing is sufficient for safe disinfection. Completely dried
out tubing is not suited for disinfection in the MEDISTER. Therefore it is not advisable
to store used tubing (catheter sets, for instance) at room temperature for too long a
time before disinfection. We recommend to put them into the MEDITAINER container
immediately after use and disinfect the entire waste in the MEDISTER within 72
hours.

Exceptions:

* Closed rigid containers

(i.e. filled glass bottles)
* Explosive substances
* Acids, chemical byproducts, lyes
* Radioactive substances
* Living creatures
* Cytostatic
* Intense HF-absorbing materials (i.e. containing charcoal-graphite)

WARNING!
Rigid impermeably sealed gas tight containers (e.g. glass bottles) must always
be opened before they are put into the MEDISTER device. EXPLOSION
HAZARD!

Waste is collected in reuseable, HF-stable MEDITAINER waste container. Needles
and other metal objects ( e.g. bottle lids, metal caps, needles, lancets) may be
collected only in prick-proof HF-stable plastic boxes.

Small amounts of waste may be collected in a “special METEKA bio waste bag“ and
can be added to the other waste inside the MEDITAINER also in closed condition.

Do not fill the MEDITAINER more than three fourth and not more than one half if
you are processing mainly liquid waste in plastic bags (volume increase by inflation
of closed bags).
Maximum volume of liquids filled into the MEDITAINER – 1 liter
Maximum weight of MEDITAINER – 3 kg

Moisture in the waste is the basic prerequisite for safe disinfection and fire
prevention.

Water and VISCIT addition:

- Mostly dry waste (e.g. cellulose): pour 500 millilitres of water evenly over the
waste. (Hot water reduces the heating time!)

- Moist waste: (e.g. blood tubes, laboratory waste): pour 300 millilitres of water
evenly over the waste. (Hot water reduces the heating time!)

Add 30 ml VISCIT deoderizer to every waste charge.

Special cases:

- Small and thin-walled closed rigid receptacles (in case they cannot be opened)

They are collected in extra microwave-transparent plastic containers

(polypropylene). Then this extra container is filled with water until all liquid-
containing receptacles to be disinfected are at least half immersed below the water
level.
Greater and thick-walled receptacles have to be opened in any case!

CAUTION! Risk of explosion in case of disregard!

Never put the extra containers filled this way into the MEDISTER by themselves,
rather put them into the MEDITAINER waste container in a standing position,
together with the other waste.
CAUTION! Be sure there is no water running out of this extra container! Risk
of explosion !

- Needles and other metal objects may be collected only in HF-stable, prick-proof
containers made of plastic (polypropylene). These containers must be filled with
enough water to cover all metal parts.

CAUTION! Risk of overheating in case of disregard!

Never put such extra containers filled this way into the MEDISTER by themselves,
rather put them into the MEDITAINER waste container in a standing position,
together with the other waste.
CAUTION: Be sure there is no water running out of this extra container!
Risk of explosion!

- Dry waste

If the MEDITAINER is filled mainly or exclusively with dry material (paper,

cellulose etc), the waste must be moistened in layers already when filled into the
MEDITAINER (add approx. 1 litre of water per 1 kg dry waste).
CAUTION! Risk of overheating in case of disregard!

NOTICE!
In case of closed containers with lyophilised germs/spores, field testing is required to
determine the efficacy of disinfection in the MEDISTER device.

It is possible to disinfect organ waste and animal corcasses in the MEDISTER 10.
After the treatment, however, these items must be disposed of according to legal
provisions (animal carcasses processing, burial, incineration)

When the MEDITAINER container has been filled according to the waste collecting
guidelines, put the protruding part of the waste bag inside the MEDITAINER, close
the lid and lock it by the straps.

If you want to treat materials/wastes not covered in this manual, please consult
METEKA company first.

Waste collection:

• Before waste collection the waste bag is placed in

the MEDITAINER waste container.
• Do not fill the MEDITAINER more than three fourth
and not more than one half if you are processing
mainly liquid waste in plastic bags (volume increase
by inflation of closed bags).
• Small amounts of waste may be collected in a
“special METEKA bio waste bag“ and can be added
to the other waste inside the MEDITAINER also in
closed condition.

• Before disinfecting the waste materials it is essential

to add 500 ml of water into the MEDITAINER. Also
add 30 ml of VISCIT to the waste.

• Close the lid of the MEDITAINER

• Shut the lockings
