READING MATERIAL FOR CATCH-UP FRIDAY

Subject: English

Reading Strategy: Choral Reading

Reading skills: Fluency

What is choral reading?

Choral reading is reading aloud in unison with a whole

class or group of students. Choral reading helps build
students’ fluency, self-confidence, and motivation.
Because students are reading aloud together, students
who may ordinarily feel self-conscious or nervous about
reading aloud have built-in support.

Why use choral reading?

It can provide less skilled readers the opportunity to

practice and receive support before being required to
read on their own.

Choral reading allows all students to participate,

fostering a sense of confidence and community in the
classroom.

It provides a model for fluent reading as students listen.

It helps improve the ability to read sight words.

Wherever a human heart might be, I’d speak in the people’s ear;
Telling a tale, or singing a song, And whenever they shouted ‘Liberty,’
In praise of the right – in blame of the wrong. Without deserving to be free,
I’d make their error clear.

I’d seek the kings of Earth;
I’d find them alone on their beds at night
