SUMMATIVE TEST 3 in General Physics 2 _______________________

Quarter 3 ___
DIRECTIONS: This summative test is based on modules. Read each direction carefully and answer accordingly.
Write neatly. THIS SERVES AS YOUR ANSWER SHEET.
A. MULTIPLE CHOICES. Choose the letter of your answer. Write the letter of your answer on the space before the
number.
1. What will happen to the capacitance if the area of the plate is doubled?
a. Remains the same b. Increase Twice c. Reduced twice d. Increase 4x
2. The following affects the capacitance in a cylindrical capacitor, which is not?
a. Length of the cylinder b. Area of the cylinder c. Radius of the Cylinder
3. What is the purpose of the dielectric?
a. Permits the flow of electrons from one plate to another
b. Prevents the moving of electrons between plates
c. Charge the capacitor by allowing the voltages to enter in the plates
d. Store electrical energy
4. Which of the following is true in a capacitors connected in series?
a. The total voltage is equal to the voltage across each capacitor.
b. The total capacitance is the sum of individual capacitance.
c. The total charge is equal to the individual charges in each capacitor.
d. The total resistance is equal to the individual resistance in the circuit.
5. Which of the following is true on a spherical capacitor?
a. The positive Q is on the outer sphere. c. The positive Q is on the inner sphere.
b. The negative Q is on the inner sphere. d. The negative Q is on both spheres.

B. COMPLETE THE TABLE BELOW. Base your answers from the modules given.
Quantity Letter Symbol SI unit Word Equivalent of SI unit
Capacitance
Charge
Voltage
Area
Diameter
Permittivity of free space

C. SOLVING. Solve the following problems. Use extra sheet of paper if the space is not enough.
1. The capacitance of an empty capacitor is 1.2µF. The capacitor is connected to a 12V battery and charged up.
With the capacitor connected to the battery, a slab of dielectric material is inserted between the plates. As a
result, 2.6 x 10-5 C of additional charge flows from one plate, through the battery, and on to the other plate. What
is the dielectric constant K of the material?

2. There were four capacitors with values 1 µF, 2 µF, 3 µF and 4 µF. Find the total capacitance if these capacitors
are connected (a) in series and (b) in parallel.

SUMMATIVE TEST 4 in General Physics 2 _______________________

Quarter 3 ___
DIRECTIONS: This summative test is based on modules. Read each direction carefully and answer accordingly.
Write neatly. THIS SERVES AS YOUR ANSWER SHEET.
A. COMPLETE THE TABLE BELOW. Base your answers from the modules given.
What will happen to the resistance (other factors are constant) Increase/Decrease/ Remains the same
Length is increased
Area is Increased
Diameter is increased
Length is reduced
Area is reduced
Length is reduced
B. SOLVING. Solve the following problems. Use extra sheet of paper if the space is not enough.
1. The instructions for an electric lawn mower suggest that a 20-gauge extension cord with cross-sectional area of
5.2 x 10 -7 m2, can be used for distances up to 35m. But, a thicker 16-gaugecord with cross-sectional area of
13 x 10-7 m2 for should be used for longer distances, to keep the resistance of the wire as small as possible.
Determine the resistance of (a) 35m of 20-gauge copper wire and (b) 75 m of 16-gauge copper wire.

2. Figure 20.9a shows a cherry-red heating element on an electric stove. The

element contains a wire (length = 1.1m, cross-sectional area = 3.1 x 10-6 m2)
through which electric charge flows. As figure 20.9b shows, this wire is embedded
within an electrically insulating material that is contained within a metal casing.
The wire becomes hot in response to the flowing charge and heats the casing. The
material of the wire has a resistivity of ρ0 = 6.8 x 10 -5 ꭥ.m at T0 = 320 oC and a
temperature coefficient of resistivity of α = 2.0 x 10 -3 (Co)-1. Determine the
resistance of the heater wire at an operating temperature of 420 oC.
(Note: remember your Mathematics if the exponent is negative)
