KD 5.2 TEKS BERBENTUK EXPLANATION

Read the following text to answer questions 1 to 5

The petroleum we obtain to day was formed under the ground for many millions of years. In the past, small
animals living in the sea sank to the seabed when they died. Layers of these creatures built up over millions of years,
and the actions of heat, pressure and bacteria turned their bodies into petroleum. The petroleum spread through porous
rocks until it came to impervious rocks. In this way, pockets of petroleum were formed beneath the ground. Over many
thousands of years, this land rose above the sea, and deposits of oil are now found on or near land.
Oil companies employ scientists to study rocks and discover where oil is likely to be found. If it seems likely

Rain
Rain always comes from clouds. But where do clouds come from? How does all the water get into the sky?
Think about your bathroom. There is hot water in your bath. Steam goes up from the hot water. The steam
makes small clouds in the bathroom. These warm clouds meet the cold walls and windows. Then we see small drops of
water on the walls and windows.
The world is like your bathroom. The water in the oceans is warm when the sun shines on it. Some of this
water goes up into the sky and makes clouds. The wind carries the clouds for hundreds of kilometers. The clouds meet
the cold air in the sky. Then we’ll see drops of water after the condensation of clouds to water. The drops of water are

In winter there is snow on the mountains. When spring comes and the sun comes out, it shines onto the snow.
The snow melts. The melting snow turns into water and flows off the mountain and enters the rivers. The huge amount
of water makes the water level rise.
If rocks and concreted areas surround rivers they can cause floods. If it rains the rain falls onto the rock.
Nothing can soak up the water. The water flows down the rocks and into the river.
When it rains for a long time the huge amount of rain cannot soak into the soil. The water forms small stream.
The stream all lead to the main river and feed it. As the water enters the river, the water level rises. If there is not a dam
on the bank of the river the river will flood.
During spring while the rivers are still blocked by ice, floods occur in Siberia. The snow melts but the river is
unable to flow because of the ice. The river stops and builds up. When it gets up as high as the ice, it is already so high
that it causes a flood.
Though floods occur in most parts of the world they do not occur very often. In the past 250 years there were
150 major floods. The most flood-prone river is the Huang He River (also called the Yellow River and China’s Sorrow)
which is located in Northern China.

Read the following text to answer questions 1 to 5
Speech production is made possible by the specialized movements of our vocal organs that generate speech
sound waves.
Like all sound production requires a source of energy. The source of energy for speech production is steady
stream of air that comes from the lungs as we exhale. When we breathe normally, the air stream is inaudible. To
become audible, the air stream must vibrate rapidly. The vocal cords cause the air stream to vibrate
As we talk, the vocal cords open and close rapidly, choopping up the steady air stream into a series of puffs.
These puffs are heard as a buzz. But this buzz is still not a speech.
To produce speech sound, the vocal tract must change shape. During speech we continually alter the shape of
the vocal tract by moving the tongue and lips, etc. These movements change the acoustic properties of the vocal tract,
which in turn produce the different sounds of speech.

1. The function of our vocal organ is………..

a. to create sound
b. to generate speech sound waves
c. to move the speech organ
d. to create sound waves
e. to make special movements
2. The energy we need to speak is gained from……

a. Buzz is a part of speech organ
b. Tongue and lips are the acoustic properties
c. Air stream is inaudible because it does not vibrate
d. To produce speech sound, the vocal tract must remain the same
e. During the speech, we continually keep the shape of the vocal tract

Speech Production
The gross components of the speech system are the lungs, trachea (windpipe), larynx (organ of speech
production), pharyngeal cavity (throat), oral or buccal cavity (mouth), and nasal cavity (nose).
In technical discussions, the pharyngeal and oral cavities are usually grouped into one unit referred to as the
vocal tract, and the nasal cavity is often called the nasal tract. Accordingly, the vocal tract begins at the output of the
larynx (vocal cords or glottis) and terminates at the input to the lips. The nasal tract begins at the velum and ends at the
nostrils. When the velum (a trapdoor-like mechanism at the back of the oral cavity) is lowered, the nasal tract is
acoustically coupled to the vocal tract to produce the nasal sounds of speech.
Meanwhile, air enters the lungs via the normal breathing mechanism. As air is expelled from the lungs through
the trachea, the tensed vocal cords within the larynx are caused to vibrate by the airflow. The airflow is chopped into
quasi-periodic pulses, which later are modulated in frequency in passing through the throat, the oral cavity, and possibly
the nasal cavity. Depending on the positions of the various articulators (i.e. jaw, tongue, velum, lips and mouth),
different sounds are produced.
In the physiological mechanism for creating speech, the lungs and the associated muscles act as the source of
the air for exciting the vocal mechanism. The muscle force pushes air out of the lungs and through the trachea.
When the vocal cords are tensed, the airflow causes them to vibrate, producing so called voiced speech sounds.
When the vocal cords are relaxed, in order to produce a sound, the airflow either must pass through a constriction in the
vocal tract and thereby become turbulent, producing so called unvoiced sounds, or it can build up pressure behind a
point of the total closure is opened, the pressure is suddenly and abruptly release, causing a brief transient sound.

1. The following are the gross components of the speech system, except…….
a. Larynx

c. trachea
d. throat
e. nose
2. Where does the vocal tract start?
a. at the velum
b. at the nostrils
c. at the input to the lips

e. at the ends of the throat
3. What makes the tensed vocal cords within the larynx vibrate?
a. the airflow
b. the quasi-periodic pulses
c. the various articulators
d. the vocal tract
e. the associated muscles
4. What will the vocal cords do to produce a sound while relaxing?
a. pushing up within a cylinder or vibrating
b. passing through the throat or producing nasal sounds
c. passing through a constriction in the vocal tract or building up pressure behind a
point of the total closure within the vocal tract
d. releasing a transient sound or producing voiced speech sound

Snore no more
Snoring has been associated with sleep apnea, a breathing disorder linked to elevated blood pressure,
cardiovascular stress, headaches, depression, and fatigue.
Snoring, very simple, is caused by the vibration of the soft tissues at the back of the throat. In general, three
factors contribute to these vibrations. They are weak muscles, masses encroaching on the airway (in children, for
instance, snoring can almost always be traced to enlarged tonsils and adenoids), and obstructed nasal breathing.
The first factor-weak muscles, explains why most snoring takes place during deep stages of sleep, when throat
muscles relax and the tongue falls back, causing vibration. Understanding gravity, you can easily see why snoring often
occurs when people sleep on their backs.
The second factor-things that crowd the airway, can sometimes be blamed on heredity. While the average sized
uvula (that fleshly lobe shaped structure that hangs in the back of your throat) measures a quarter inch, some poor souls
have one that’s four times as long. Other traits can exacerbate snoring, too. Obese people are three times more likely to
snore than thin ones (their bulkiness extends throughout their bodies). And smokers’ throats are irritated daily, causing
mucous membranes to swell, narrowing the airway.
The third factor-obstructed nasal breathing, can have many causes. Congestion, allergies, polyps, even a
deviated septum are just a few.
In some cases, a sleeper’s airway may be completely blocked, causing breathing to stop for a period before the
sleeper is jolted partially awake, gasps for air and falls back to sleep. Then the process is repeated. Known as
obstructive sleep apnea, this condition can lead to severe cardiac and pulmonary problems, even death.

Riding a bicycles is a great way to get around. Bicycles are quiet, fun to ride, and you don’t need gas or
electricity to make them go. You just use the power of your legs.
Bicycles have two wheels. One wheel is in front of the other. You swing your legs over the bike, sit down and
start pedaling.
The heart of every bicycle is its frame. Most bicycles have frames made of thin metal tubes. The best frames
are light and strong. A seat, called a saddle, is in the middle of the frame. You can make the seat higher or lower.
Bicycle wheels usually have wire spokes. Spokes help the wheel keep its round shape. Inflatable tires fit on the
wheels. The wheels have brakes for stopping.
A bicycle has handlebars. You use the handlebars to steer and help you balance on two wheels. Most bikes
have brake levers on the handlebars. You squeeze the levers to make the brakes work.
Pedals and a chain make a bike go. You put your feet on the pedals and push. The pedals go around and
around. The turning pedals move a chain. The chain goes to the back wheel. The chain goes around a part called a cog.
The moving chain makes the cog on the back wheel turn.
Most bicycles have a gearshift attached to the frame or the handlebars. Bikes usually have from 5 to 27 gears.
Bicycles gears have a part called a derailleur. The derailleur shifts the chain to lower or higher gears. You use a lever to
shift gears.
You use low gears for going up a hill. You use high gears for going faster, usually on flat roads or downhill.

KD 5.2 TEKS BERBENTUK DISCUSSION
The following text is for questions 1 to 5
There are a lot of discussions as to whether children should be given homework or not.
Some people claim that children do enough work in school already. They also argue that children have hobbies
that they want to do after school, such as sports or music. A further point they make is that a lot of homework is
pointless and doesn’t help the child learn at all.
However, there are also strong arguments against this point of view. Parents and teachers argue that it is
important to find out whether children can work on their own without the support from the teacher. They say that the
evening is a good time for children to sit down and think about what they have learned in school.
Furthermore they claim that the school day is too short to get anything done that needs doing and it makes sense
to send home task like independent reading or further writing tasks that don’t need teacher’s support.
On balance, I think that some homework is a good idea but that it should have only given at the weekend when
children have more time.

Death penalty for serious criminals has been discussed by our experts. Those who agree say that death penalty
will scare the criminals off. However, those who disagree say that it is inhuman, not effective and we cannot correct the
wrong sentence after the criminals die.
In Switzerland, this penalty does not exist. Most people argue that the possibility of making the wrong decision is
always there although it is true that spending life behind the bars is not easy either. Also, every person should have a
chance for rehabilitation. In this way he or she can start all over again in another life style.
Those who agree argue that there is no use to feed the terrorists in prison with their money. When they get out,
they will create a lot of trouble by blackmailing and killing people. So, who says that jails will stop them from being
bad guys?

Nuclear power is generated by using uranium, which is a metal mined in various parts of the world. The first
large-scale nuclear power station was opened at Calder Hall in Cumbria, England, in 1956.
Some military ships and submarines have nuclear power plant for engines. Nuclear power produces around 11 %
of the world’s energy needed, and produces huge amounts of energy. It causes no pollution as you’d get when burning
fossil fuels.
The advantages of nuclear is as follows:
1. It costs about the same as coal, so it’s not expensive to make
2. It doesn’t produce smoke or carbon dioxide, so it doesn’t contribute to the greenhouse
effect
3. It produces huge amounts of energy from small amount of uranium
4. It produces small amounts of waste
5. It is reliable
On the other hand, nuclear power is very, very dangerous. It must be sealed up and buried for many years to
allow the radioactivity to die away. Furthermore, although it is reliable, a lot of money has to be spent on safety because
if it does go wrong, a nuclear accident can be a major disaster.
People are increasingly concerned about this. In the 1990’s nuclear power was the fastest growing sources of
power in many parts of the world. In 2005, it was the 2nd slowest-growing.

Should people who live in the city be allowed to keep dogs?
There are many reasons for keeping dogs as pets in the city area, but there also many people who feel dogs
should not be allowed in the city.
Dogs are often not taken care of properly. They are kept in small backyards and rarely taken for walks. They are
left on a yard all day by themselves while the family are at work. Very little attention is ever given to the dog and it is
not a very good life for it. It is no wonder these dogs bark and disturb the neighbors and become a nuisance to the
community.
On the other hand not all people treat their dogs this way and why should the people who receive a lot of
pleasure and enjoyment from dogs suffer? Dogs can make a lonely person’s life happy or make a wonderful playmate.
It can also teach a child responsibility as they not only get to play with the dog, but also need to exercise, feed and care
for the dog.
I feel that we should be allowed to keep dogs in the city, because if taken care of properly, dogs can be a great
source of pleasure. As a child I used to enjoy playing and taking care of my pet. There is no greater loyalty a person can
get than from a well-cared for dog.

The following text is for questions 7 to 10

In modern world, women have the benefit from the wider chance of getting a career outside their household
sphere. Many women, however, have some difficulties deciding whether they will pursue a career or not. Some of them
stay at their offices, while at the same time they act as a housewives. But, the others choose to concentrate their
attention to their household only.
Being career women offers the advantage of a wider chance of self-actualization. They can widen their
knowledge and develop their capacity. For example, many women do not know exactly what is their talent before they
start a career. But then, after they have a career they know which field they can do best and which one they cannot. This
will help them to refocus their life goal.
Another big advantage is that they can help supporting their household’s finance so that men do not become
the single fighter in financing their families. For example, if a wife works, she can help her husband financing their
children’s educational budget, so that their children can have the best education.
Being career women, on the other hand, has some significant disadvantages, too. They have more burdens in
their life, as they have to manage their job as well as their household. For example, a female teacher has to prepare
teaching material for tomorrow class while at the same time she has to think about how to handle her naughty son.
In addition, being career women can be risky for their household. For example, many women have to spend
their time more in their career as it grows more challenging, so they have only limited time left for their family,
resulting in their lack of care and attention for their husband and children. The extreme impact of this situation is the
broken home.
In the end, the decision that each woman makes will depend on their own personal values, as well as their
readiness for taking on the considerable consequences of each choice.

7. Where can you find the argument for (affirmative argument) in the text above?
a. Paragraph 2 and 3

d. Paragraph 1, 2, and 3
e. Paragraph 5 and 6
8. What is the best title for the text above?
a. modern women
b. career women
c. traditional women
d. past women
e. present women
9. Where can you find the argument against (negative argument) in the text above?
a. Paragraph 1
b. Paragraph 2
c. Paragraph 2 and 3
d. Paragraph 4
e. Paragraph 5
10. What does “The single fighter” in paragraph 3 mean?
a. the men look for less money to finance their family needs
b. the men look for job to fulfill their needs

Is x-ray examination necessary?
Students, do you know that there are many opinions concerning the use of x-ray and others don’t agree to the use
of x-ray?
Well, some people agree that x-ray examination is beneficial. They say that doctors should use x-ray in
examining a severe illness. If doctors don’t use x-ray, they will miss some important information which is very useful in
making a diagnose on the patient’s disease. And this will sometimes cause the doctor inaccurate in prescribing the
medicine to cure the illness.
Not all patients agree with the use of x-ray examination, however. They think that using x-ray examination will
cost them a lot of money. That’s really true. Another reason is the radiation of x-ray has some risks to the body tissues.
Well, as result of this controversy, many people are planning a traditional health cure to avoid the high cost of
hospital care. Whereas hospitals insist on having x-ray examinations on patients to get an accurate diagnose although
the cost is very high.

Using Nuclear Energy should be avoided for the shake of environmental safety
Nuclear energy is commonly offered as an alternative to overcome the crisis of energy. The debate whether the
use of nuclear energy is an appropriate choice has not come to an end. Some people agree with the utilization of it
because of its benefits. Some others, however, disagree because of its risks to the environmental safety. So, nuclear
energy should be avoided.
Those who agree with the operation of nuclear reactors usually argue that the energy produced from them can be
used for multipurpose. The reactors can produce radioisotopes utilized in medical, industrial, and agricultural fields.
They also claim that nuclear energy is the only feasible choice to answer the ever-increasing energy needs. According to
them, the other sources of energy: oil, coal, and liquid natural gas are not renewable and safe, while the nuclear energy
can be sustainably produced in a safe way. Some government officials also point out that this kind of energy is the
safest one in response to the environment compared to the non-renewable ones mentioned above. They claim that the
reactor operates on a zero-release basis, which means that waste materials are processed so that none will be released
into the environment. In addition, they believe that nuclear energy will never cause pollution, but the others, especially
oil and coal, really do.
On the other hand, people who disagree with the use of nuclear energy, keep criticizing that to choose it, as the
best alternative to overcome the growing energy needs is silly. The silliness can be seen from the question why they are
interested in nuclear power when there is still an abundance of natural energy resources, like oil, coal, hydroelectric,
thermal, etc.
In reaction to the environment, they add that the operation of the nuclear reactors does not make any sense. Some
NGOs specializing in efforts to save environment argue that their waste products completely destroy environment and
human lives. On the other hand, it is true that the other kinds of energy like oil and coal support the environmental
pollution, but their contribution can still be tolerated. It is also rue that the reactors provide energy in great quantities,
but their contributions to destroy our environments and lives cannot be avoided. A meltdown in a reactor, for example,
result in a contamination of soil and water under its core, making human lives impossible for miles around. The reactor
is also dangerous to human lives because of its radiation leaking. In this case, it is often said that under a good control
no fission products are allowed to leak out from the reactor. But who can guarantee this?
It is obvious that nuclear energy should be avoided because it endangers environment. If we continue using it,
while the radiation is very poorly controlled, it will kill ourselves sooner or later. The government should pay much
attention to the fact and revise the choice.

Multi Level Marketing (MLM), which has been mushrooming in Indonesia, still becomes debates among those
who agree with the system and those who disagree. Here are some of the arguments.
On the other hand, people believe that the strategy can improve people’s income and way of life. By selling
products, an MLMer will get an active income, that is 20% - 30% profit of the price of the products. If someone, say
Mr. Arnold, can prospect people to become his/her downline, Mr Arnold will also receive a percentage from the goods
the downline buys. If the downline can also expand the network, Mr. Arnold will also get percentages. Besides, it can
develop one’s personality and encourage him/her to work harder. Because MLMs offer people financially freedom in
the future, they will try to avoid feeling of worry and shy to prospect the products. MLM companies also conduct
seminars and meetings to encourage people to work harder.
Many MLMers fail to prospect people either become members or buy their products. Because MLM is neither
advertised nor sold in general markets. MLMers should spend more time to memorize and persuade people the quality
of their products. This really needs much spirit. Not all people agree the company’s promise to improve people’s
income. The cons say that they see a cheesy, obvious, and blatant appeal to greed and materialism. Although there are
few reasons why people don’t want to follow MLM, it’s not as bad. It depends on how people control and motivate
themselves. Moreover, the marketing strategy has been legalized by government, and has been the most expensive
profession ever known.
1. How can an MLMer get percentages?

The following text is for questions 1 to 5

In the last few years there has been an explosion in the use of new communications technologies, including
mobile phones, it sis estimated that over 70% of young people aged 10-14 now own one. Considerable debate has taken
place in the press recently as to whether pupils should be allowed to take their mobile phones into school.
No one can deny the positive benefits of children communicating freely with each other, and the pupil argue that
using a mobile phone to talk to or text-message their friends is simply one way of doing this, using new technology.
Many parents are in favor too, and like the reassurance of knowing their child can be safer and more independent if they
have a mobile phone, since they can contact them at any time if necessary. They cite potential risks faced by some
children traveling alone.
However, schools point out that carrying a mobile phone could in itself make a child more vulnerable to thefts or
mugging, both on the street and even in the playground. Police figures confirm that a high proportion of the crimes
committed against young people involve thefts of mobile phones. Schools are concerned, moreover, that allowing
pupils to bring their mobiles to school could create a competitive atmosphere amongst children and result in some
children feeling left out and unvalued. In addition they claim that pupils’ education would be affected by the distraction
of phones ringing in the class.
Some doctors fear the children using mobile phones could suffer long-term brain damage. Until this is disproved,

There was a lot of discussion about whether boxing should be banned.
The people who agree with this idea, such as Sarah, claim that if they do carry on boxing they should wear
something to protect their heads. They also argue that people who do boxing could have brain damage and get seriously
hurt. A further point they make is that most of the people that have died did have families.
However, there are also strong arguments against this point of view. Another group of people believe that
boxing should not be banned. They say why was it invented if it is such a dangerous sport. They say that boxing is a

Dear Vita,
Regret is something I’ve dealt with a lot lately. You see, my 35-year old sister died of diabetes
complications three weeks ago on New Year’s Eve. As soon as I found out, I immediately started
thinking of all the things I wished I had done. I started feeling tremendous guilt for all the things I

Dear Sir,

We are writing to complain about ads on TV. There are so many ads, especially during our favorites programs.
We think they should be stopped for a number of reasons.
First, ads are a nuisance. They go for a long time and there are so many. Sometimes there seems to be more ads
than programs.
Second, ads are a bad influence on people. They try to encourage people to buy unhealthy food like beer, soft
drink, candy, and chips. And they make people want things they do not really need and cannot afford.
Finally, the people who make ads have too much say in what programs people watch. That is because they
want to pull al their ads on popular programs that a lot of people watch. Some programs which are not so popular get
stopped because they do not attract enough ads, even though those programs may be someone’s favorites.
For those reasons, we think your TV station should stop showing ads. They interrupt programs, are a bad
influence on people, and sometimes put a stop to people’s favorites shows. We are sick of ads, and now we mostly
watch channel 2 (ABC).

Yours faithfully,

Adrian

44 Changi Road
Singapore 144108
16th November 2004

Dear Simon,
I was disturbed to hear that you have been going steady with your classmate and that it has affected your studies greatly.
I hope you won’t mind if I, as an old friend of yours, give you some advice.
First of all, you must understand the difference between true love and infatuation. Right now you may think that you
have found the perfect dream girl. You think you are deeply in love with her and want to be with her twenty-four hours
a day. But the truth is, you are not really in love, you are merely infatuated. Yes, you feel great, like being on a roller
coaster ride, but it will end faster than you think.
The difference between love and infatuation is easy to discern. Infatuation is based on selfish motivations. Have you
ever thought to yourself. I feel proud because I can boast of my beautiful girlfriend, or I feel happy only when I am with
her? If so, you are merely gratifying yourself.
Real love is an expression of deep appreciation for another person. It is unselfish, and desires to give and care for the
other person. True love is a deep commitment to love the other person whatever the circumstance may be.
As students, our first duty is to do well in our studies. Romance can come later, when we are sufficiently mature in our
judgment and outlook, and have the means to support ourselves. Right now, keep your circle of friends wide. If you
must go dating, go in a group. Do not get entangled in any relationship that will affect your studies.
I am writing this letter in the hope that it would help you to straighten out your thoughts and put your priorities right.
All the best to you!

village of Portreath overlooks an area of sand, book ended by cliffs.
Portreath is the best village in the area. It began as the playground of the Redruth
Camborne miners. Now it is slightly middle-class resort filled in summer with families on
holidays. In the mid 19th century the small harbour bustled with sailing vessels.
Cornwall’s mining land-scapes have been nominated for World Heritage status. At dusk,
we climb Cam Brea, an Iron Age settlement and hill fort close to Redruth. We count more than a
dozen mine chimneys against the evening skyline. Standing on top of Cam Brea, it is hard to
believe that 150 years ago these relics of the mining industry shrieked with the sound of heavy
machinery. Now, except for chirruping of the birds, all is silent.
If you’ve got the legs and the stamina there’s no better way to get to know Cornwall’s
wild Atlantic seaboard than to hike it. The National Trust looks after 260 km of Cornish
coastline, sand dunes and sheltered bays for walkers. On a breezy day with the sun flitting in and
out of clouds, we take the local bus from Redruth to St Agnes and hike 12 km south to Portreath.
The 18 km cycling trail is the best in that part of the country. It takes you from Portreath
in the west to the river at Devoran in the southeast. The path follows the tracks of the horse
drawn tramways that once hauled ore to the ports.
Surfing is popular on the beaches of west Cornwall. There is always a hardly group of
surfers in the waves in all weather. New quay is the surf capital but there are plenty of good
beaches north towards Padstow and south to St Ives.

Questions 9 to 11 refer to the following text!

Robert Edwards was blinded in an automobile accident nine years ago. He was also partially
deaf because of old age. Last week, he was strolling near his home when a thunderstorm
approached. He took refuge under a tree and was struck by lighting. He was knocked to the
ground and woke up some 20 minutes later, lying face down in water below a tree. He went into
the house and lay down in bed. A short time later, he woke; his legs were numb and he was
trembling, but when he opened his eyes, he could see the clock across the room fading in and
out in front of him. When his wife entered, he saw her for the first time in nine years. Doctors
confirm that he has regained his sight and hearing apparently from the flash or lighting, but they
are unable to explain the occurrence. The only possible explanation offered by one doctor was
that, since Edwards lost his sight as a result of trauma in a terrible accident, perhaps the only
way it could be restored was by another trauma.

The largest of the world’s 17 penguin species, emperor penguins stand nearly four feet and
weigh up to 90 pounds. These sea birds never set foot on dry land. (1) An estimated 200,000
breeding pairs live in about 40 penguin colonies scattered along the coasts of Antarctica. (2) Their
waterproofed feathers, flipper-like wings, and streamlined bodies make them excellent swimmers
and divers. On ice they can travel distances up to 50 miles by “tobogganing”—gliding on their
stomachs while pushing with their wings and feet.
(3) Emperor penguins breed during the Antarctic winter in some of the world’s most severe
weather conditions (temperatures of –80 F and winds up to 112 miles per hour). Breeding during
the winter allows chicks to mature in midsummer when food is plentiful. After the female lays a
single egg, the male holds it in a fold of skin near his feet for a two-month incubation period.
During this time he huddles with other males to keep warm. (4) The male moves very little and does
not eat, usually losing up to a third of his body weight. Meanwhile the females go to sea and dive
for fish so that when they return they can feed and care for the newly hatched chicks. After the male
restores his body weight, both parents take turns caring for their young.
The world’s emperor penguin population declined in the last 50 years due to a period of
warming ocean temperatures. Warm water shrinks ice cover and reduces the population of krill—a
small crustacean that is the emperor penguin’s staple food. Today the emperor penguin population
has stabilized, but warming trends could again threaten this magnificent sea bird.

20. What is the author’s main purpose in this passage?

A. to describe the recent plight of the emperor penguin
B. to show the differences between penguin species
C. to show the similarity among penguin species
D. to describe the characteristics and breeding practice of the emperor penguin

B. The world’s emperor penguin population decreased because of a period of warming
ocean temperature
C. They breed during Antarctic summer.
D. The male incubates the egg.
E. They can withstand severe weather.

22. The word ‘stabilized’ in the last sentence paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ___
A. held steady.
B. increased.
C. slowed.
D. fluctuated.
E. Developed

23. Why do male emperor penguins form a huddle?

If we can agree that government has some roles to play in our lives, then let's at least make
it a positive one. Consider the benefits of free, fully-subsidized public transportation.
First, it will motivate more people to leave their cars at home. Think of the reduction in
pollution and traffic jams and insurance costs due to accidents. Greener cities, safer cities, more
liveable cities. More room for parks and trees. Think of the money we'll all save by consuming less
gas, spending less frequently on car repairs, and so on. That money will stay in our wallets and we
could then turn around and give the economy a boost by spending it on other consumer goods or
services. More jobs.
Secondly, we must consider the health benefits. We'll all walk a little more. This will reduce
visits to doctors' offices and hospitals because we'll be healthier. We'll have improved blood
pressure, lower stress and possibly a better complexion.
In addition, free transportation will encourage us to enjoy the company of our friends and
family. It will become much more feasible to safely drink another glass of wine at the restaurant or
have that extra beer at the family gathering. We'll avoid the worry of getting behind the wheel with
a blood-alcohol level that's above the legal limit. Fewer accidents, fewer tragedies, lower costs of
policing and reduced court backlogs. The increased public expense in transportation should pay off
in the form of reduced health care costs and a safer society.
Then, think about some of the other social benefits: imagine how much we'll learn from
each other when we share rides instead of sitting in isolation in our cars. Talking to the neighbors
might come back into fashion. More people will meet and talk and maybe even help each other.
Having someone else drive us will also give us more time for reading books and
newspapers. So, park your car and use it for your dream vacation.
No more fumbling for change, just hop on and off the streetcar or bus wherever and
whenever you like. What a great idea, especially for those who live in crowded, polluted cities. It
will renew life on our streets.
So I can't agree more with this proposition. Let's go for it!

2012 Film Review

2012 is Roland Emmerich’s film which uses the Mayan calendar and other end-of-days
prophecies for their doomsday scenario. It imagines the world coming to an end in 2012.
2012 film brings off a series of wonders. The movie hits its peak early on. It starts when
Cusack drives a limo through the streets of Los Angeles as freeways and skyscrapers crumble all
around him from the sock of a 10.5 earthquake. The preposterous flying sequence is equally
thrilling. The climax occurs aboard the giant ark when an equipment malfunction almost
threatens the entire mission.
Unfortunately, the crucial sequence is not filmed or edited with the requisite clarity. In
2012 film, Emmerich leaves us befuddled as to exactly what is happening to whom. However,
Emmerich’s 2012 deserves credit for offbeat casting. Cusack supplies his trademark hangdog
charm. McCarthy has perhaps his best role ever as Peet’s cocky. Danny Glover lends dignity to
the role of the tormented president. Chiwetel Ejiofor, as the chief scientist, brings a moving sense
of anguish to a stock role. Platt has fun playing the villain of the piece, and Woody Harrelson
also chews the scenery as a bug-eyed radio prophet trying to warn his listeners about
Armageddon.
All in one, 2012’s cinematography, production design and visual effects are awards-
worthy. Music also propels the movie. It presents American idol runner-up, Adam Lambert, who
provides a rousing anthem over the end credits.

The Death Penalty

The death penalty for serious criminals has become a long discussion among experts. Those
who agree say that the death penalty will scare the criminals off. However, those who disagree say
that the death penalty is inhuman, not an effective way to stop them from doing another crime.
In Switzerland, there is no death penalty. Most people argue that the possibility of making
the wrong decision is always there; although, it is true that spending life behind bars is bad enough.
Every person should have a chance for rehabilitation so that he or she can start all over again his/her
life in a better way.
Those who agree argue that there is no use to give serius criminals another chance to live.
When they get out, they will create a lot of trouble such as blackmailing and killing people. So, who
says that jails will prevent them from being bad guys?
My own opinion is divided. On the one hand, I disagree for the death penalty is against the
human right to live. But on the other hand, whether serious criminals are worthy to live since no one
can guarantee they will never do the bad things in the future.

Angels
Two traveling angels stopped to spend the night in the home of a wealthy family. The family
was rude and refused to let the angels stay in the mansion’s guest room. Instead the angels were
given a space in the cold basement.
As they made their bed on the hard floor, the older angel saw a hole in the wall and repaired
it. When the younger angel asked why, the older angel replied, “Things aren’t always what them
seem”.
The next night the pair came to rest at the house of a very poor, but very hospitable farmer
and his wife. After sharing what little food they had, the couple let the angels sleep in their bed
where they could have a good night’s rest. When the sun came up the next morning, the angels
found the farmer and his wife in tears. Their only cow, whose milk had been their sole income, lay
dead in the field.
The younger angel was infuriated and asked the older angel, “How could you have let this
happen? The first man had everything, yet you helped him,” she accused, “The second family had
little but was willing to share everything, and you let their cow die”.
“Things aren’t always what them seem,” the older angel replied. “When we stayed in the
basement of the mansion, I noticed there was gold stored in that hole in the wall. Since the owner
was so obsessed with greed and unwilling to share his good fortune, I sealed the wall so he
wouldn’t find it. Then, last night as we slept in the farmer’s bed, the angel of death came for his
wife. I gave him the cow instead. Things aren’t always what them seem”.
Sometimes this is exactly what happens when things don’t turn out the way they should. If
you have faith, you just need to trust that every outcome is always to your advantage. You might
not know it until some time later.

Our sun is just an ordinary star, not special in any way. But to the people on earthy, it is the
source of life. The nuclear reaction that goes on in the inner areas of the sun produces large
quantities of energy. This energy is emitted in all directions in the form of light and heat radiation.
Only a small part of the radiated energy is used by our planet, Earth, for warmth, and the
development of life forms. Green plants have the ability to use of the sun’s radiation to produce
food.
The radiation energy emitted by our sun is not constant but varies slightly in predictable
cycles. Astronomers have long know about sun spots, which are major disturbances of the sun’s
outer regions. Statistical analysis of data concerning sun spots’ activity indicates a fairly well –
defined frequency of occurrence. A full theoreticalunderstanding of sun spots’ activity is not
currently available, but scientist hypothesize about the nature of the instabilities of the sun’s
atmosphere.

Avian Flu Probably was Spread by human.
Bangkok: a 26 year old woman who carded her dying daughter in her arms for 10 hours at a
hospital in north-western Thailand, and later fell sick and died herself, was the first probable case of
human-to human transmission of avian influenza this year, Thai and international health agency
officials declared on Tuesday.
The diagnosis suggests that the lethal A (H5N1) virus, popularly known as bird flu, can sicken
people who do not have close contact with infected birds.
But the doctors said that the discovery did not necessarily mean that another influenza
pandemic would occur around the world, and urged renewed international efforts to bring the
diseases under control.
A small segment of the mother’s virus has already been genetically sequenced, and matches
viral samples taken from Thai poultry, Thai health official said, suggesting that the virus may not
have developed dramatically yet.

or family groups. The rule was Ama sua, ama Ilulla, ama Sheklla, which menas, “Do not steal, do
not lie, do not be lazy”
Despite this difficult way of life, the Incas were very skillful. They constructed drainage system
and underground water reservoirs. Their buildings were made from huge stones. These were cut to
fit perfectly together so that no mortar was needed. Their rope ridges were so strong that even a
horse could gallop across them!

the Dragon Scroll, which will make him the all powerful Dragon Warrior, is the good gone bad Tai
Lung (Ian McShane). But first, he’ll have to muscle his way around 400 pounds of panda to get to
it.
