1. Explain the reason for the procedure.
2. Discuss the materials/ equipment needed.
3. Enumerate preparation needed before the procedure. (Remove
wristwatch, jewellery, keep nails short, check hands for breaks in the skin,
roll sleeves above elbows).
SKILLS
4. Stand a little bit away from the sink. (Uniform should not be touching the
sink; do not touch sink surfaces)
5. Turn on the faucet properly and adjust the flow of water (not too much, not
too little).
 For knee levers, move with knee to regulate flow and temperature.
 For foot pedals, press the foot to regulate flow and temperature.
 For elbow controls, move with the elbows instead of the hands.
6. Wet hands thoroughly by holding them under the running water and apply
soap to the hands.
 Hold the hands lower than the elbows so that the water flows from
the arms to the fingertips.
 If the soap is liquid, apply 4 to 5 ml (1 tsp.) on the palm and make
a lather on the palms up to the wrist.
 If it is a bar soap, granules or sheets, wet it first before making a
lather, after using it, remove the lather on the soap by placing it
under running water and place it back on the soap dish.
7. Thoroughly wash and rinse the hands.
 Use firm, rubbing and circular movements to wash the palms,
back, and wrist of each hand. Be sure to include the heel of the
hand, interlace the fingers and thumbs and move the hands back
and forth.
 Right palm over left dorsum with interlaced fingers and vice versa.
 Palm to palm with fingers interlaced.
 Back of fingers to opposing palms with fingers interlocked.
 Rotational rubbing of left thumb clasped in right palm and vice
versa.
 Rub the fingertips against the palm of the opposite hand vice
versa.
- Continue these motions for about 30 seconds or 5 strokes
each area.
- Still with hands directed downward, rinse hands until above
the wrist by placing the hands under running water.
8. Thoroughly pat dry the hands and arms.
 Dry hands and arms thoroughly with a paper towel without
scrubbing from fingertips to arms.
 Discard the paper towel in the appropriate container.
9. Turn off the water.
 Use a new paper towel to grasp a hand operated faucet.
10. Disposed used paper towel properly.
