SECTION - A
1 If two positive integers a and b are expressible in the form a = pq 2 and b = p3q ; p, q being 1
prime numbers, then LCM (a, b) is
(a) pq (b) p3q3 (c) p3q2 (d) p2q2
Solution:
(c) a and b are two positive integers and a =pq2 and b = p3q, where p and q are prime
numbers, then LCM=p3q2

2 Assertion: The number of common solutions for the system of linear equations 5x+4y+6=0 1
and 10x+8y=12 is zero.
Reason: The graph of linear equations a1x+b1y+c1=0 and a2x+b2y+c2=0 gives a pair of
intersecting lines if a1/a2 ≠ b1/b2

(a) Both assertion (A) and reason (R) are true and reason (R) is the correct explanation of
assertion (A).
(b) Both assertion (A) and reason (R) are true but reason (R) is not the correct
explanation of assertion (A).
(C) Assertion (A) is true but reason (R) is false.
(d) Assertion (A) is false but reason (R) is true.

Answer: (b)

3 Find the least number that is divisible by all the numbers from 1 to 10 (both inclusive). 2

Solution
To find Least number that is divisible by all the numbers between 1 and 10 (both inclusive)
Let us first find the PF of all the numbers between 1 and 10 (both inclusive)
1=1
2=2
3=3
4=22
5=5
6=2×3
7=7
8=23
9=32
10=2×5
L.C.M = Product of the highest power of the prime factors including other factors
=23×32×5×7
=8×9×5×7
=2520
4 If the squared difference of the quadratic polynomial x 2 + px + 45 is 144, then find the 2
value of ‘p’.

SECTION – C

5 Find the zeros of the following quadratic polynomials and verify the relationship between the 3
zeros and the coefficients: 2x2 – x – 6

Solution:

Verification: α + β = - b/a

2 + (- 3/2) = -(-1/2)
½ = ½

α X β = c/a
2 x (-3/2) = -6/2
-3 = -3
Hence verified.

6 At a certain time in a deer park, the number of heads and the number of legs of deer and human 3
visitors were counted and it was found that there were 39 heads and 132 legs. Find the number
of deer and human visitors in the park.

SECTION – D

7 Draw the graphs of 2x − 3y + 6 = 0 and 2x + 3y − 18 = 0. Find the ratio of areas of triangles 5

formed by the given lines with X-axis and Y-
axis.

Find three solutions of 2x-3y+6=0

Find three solutions of 2x+3y-18=0
Plot the points on the graph paper.

Area of triangle ABC formed by the lines

and the X-axis
=12 x12 x4 =24 sq.units
Area of triangle DEB formed by the lines
and the Y-axis
=12 x4x3 =6 sq.units
Ratio of areas of triangles formed by the
given lines with X-axis and Y-axis =
24 : 6 = 4 : 1

Anish and his father who is an architect by profession, visited Switzerland. They went to 4
see Gotthard Base Tunnel which is the world's longest tunnel and has a parabolic cross-
section. The mathematical representation of the tunnel is shown in figure.

(i) Write the expression of the polynomial given in

diagram?
(ii) If one zero is -4 and sum of zeroes is 1, then find the
representation of tunnel as a polynomial.

(iii) If the tunnel is represented by -x2 + 3x - 2, then

find its zeroes
Solution:

(i) Since, the parabola is downward parabola, therefore the value of ‘a’ in standard
form ax2 + bx + c is –ve. Ans: -x2 + 4
(ii)

9 Prove that √5 is irrational. Is 3 + 2√5 irrational? Justify your answer. 4

Solution:Let 5 be a rational number.then it must be in form of qp

where, q 0 ( p and q are co-prime)
5=qp
5×q=p
Suaring on both sides,
5q2=p2 --------------(1)
p2 is divisible by 5.
So, p is divisible by 5.
p=5c
Suaring on both sides,
p2=25c2 --------------(2)
Put p2 in eqn.(1)
5q2=25(c)2
q2=5c2
So, q is divisible by 5..
Thus p and q have a common factor of 5.
So, there is a contradiction as per our assumption.
The above statement contradicts our assumption.
Therefore, 5 is an irrational number.

Let us assume, to the contrary, that 3 + 2√5 is rational

So that we can find integers a and b (b ≠ 0), such that
3 + 2 √5 = ab, where a and b are coprime.
Rearranging this equation, we get

Since a and b are integers, we get that a2b – 32 is rational and so √5 is rational.
But this contradicts the fact that √5 is irrational.
So we conclude that 3 + 2√5 is irrational.
