The African Child Poem by Eku McGred

I am an African child Full of potential for a better tomorrow

Born with a skin the colour of chocolate Teach me discipline, teach me character,

Bright, brilliant and articulate teach me hard work

Strong and bold; I’m gifted Teach me to think like the star within me

Talented enough to be the best I am an African child

I am an African child
I can be extra-ordinary

Often the target of pity call me William Kamkwamba the Inventor;

My future is not confined to charity Give me a library with books

Give me the gift of a lifetime; Give me a scrap yard and discarded

Give me a dream, a door of opportunity; electronics

I will thrive Give me a broken bicycle;

I am an African child Plus the freedom to be me

And I will build you a wind mill

Do not hide my fault I am an African child
show me my wrong

I am like any other; We are the new generation

Teach me to dream Not afraid to be us

And I will become Uniquely gifted, black and talented

I am an African child Shining like the stars we are

We are the children of Africa

I am the son, daughter of the soil Making the best of us
Rich in texture and content Yes! I am an African child
