landmass of this sub-continent has seen numerous upheavals and periods marked
with glory. It has been blessed with some of the most able rulers the history has ever
witnessed. Given below is the list of some such rulers who have consolidated their
territories and administered it with great affluence.

Chandragupta Maurya

He was the first Historical Emperor of India & the Founder of the Maurya Dynasty. He
is said to be the illegitimate son of the last king of Magadha.

o With the help of Chanakya, he conspired to take possession of the Magadhan


Rule.
o His reign lasted for 24 years.
o Famous Monuments – Palace of Chandragupta Maurya at Pataliputra.

Jalal-ud-Din Muhammad Akbar

The second Mughal Emperor was born to Humayun and succeeded his father at a
very young age. The Greatest Mughal Emperor to have ruled over India for more
than half a century and was tolerant towards all religions.

o Repealed the law to collect tax from Hindu pilgrims.


o Founded the Din-e-Illahi, which was based on the basic principles of the
Hinduism, Islam, and Parsi.
o Defeated Hemu in the Second battle of Panipat.
o Famous Monuments – Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri.

Ashoka

Son of the Mauryan Emperor Bindusara, also known as Samraat Chakravartin. He is


responsible for the global spread of Buddhism.

o The emblem of modern India is derived from the Lion Capital of Ashoka.
o Ashoka took the initiative to protect minority interests in India.
o He understood the impact of war for the first time in the Battle of Kalinga.
o Famous Monuments – Sanchi Stupa & Nalanda Mahavihara.

Porus

King Porus was the king of Pauravas, the present day afghanistan and pakistan. He
was known for his bravery and commitmement for his motherland.

Shivaji Bhosale

He was the founder and the greatest king of the Maratha Empire. He won numerous
battles and escaped several sieges. He was the archenemy to the mughal kingdom in
the north and continuously kept them engaged in his tactical battles.

o He is said to be the Father of the Indian Navy.


o Created an independent Maratha kingdom and made Raigad its capital.
o He was crowned as Chhatrapati for leading the struggle against the Mughal
Empire.
o Known for pioneering Guerrilla warfare methods.

Prithviraj Chauhan

He was the King of the Hindu Chauhan dynasty. He has been remembered for his
bravery and was one of the few hindu rulers to have occupied the throne of delhi.
o Remembered for defeating Muhammad Ghori in the First Battle of Tarain in
1191.
o He killed a tiger with his bare hands in his childhood.
o His elopement with Sanyogita is a famous romantic tale in India.
o Famous Monuments – Hansi Fort & Rai Pithora’s Fort.

Maharaja Ranjit Singh

He was the founder of the Sikh Empire in Punjab. He was known for his valient nature
depite being blinded. His milatry skills and commanding qualities united the sikhs
and other people behind him.

o He was the First Sikh Emperor.


o Known as the Maharaja of Punjab.
o He was one-eyed, yet his skills were extraordinary.
o Maharaja Ranjit Singh rescued Shah Shuja, and he was given the Koh-i-Noor
Diamond.
o Famous Monuments – Ram Bagh Palace & Gurudwaras.

Samudragupta

He was the The successor of Chandragupta I. He has been known for his love of all
kind of art forms and generosity.

o The greatest king of the Gupta dynasty.


o He was generous and a lover of art.
o He is remembered for his tolerance and patronage of other religions.
o Famous Coins – He issued seven different types of coins.

King Raja Raja Chola

It is said that the Second Golden Age of Tamil Nadu started during his reign. He had
built one of the most glorious empires of South Asia.

o Built the Thanjai Big Temple.


o Famous Monuments – Airavatesvara Temple.

Alauddin Khilji

o The second sultan of the Khalji dynasty of Delhi. He was known not only for
his military might but also for the notorious acts of madness.
o He was appointed as the governor of Kara, near Allahabad city.
o He led many conquests in his reign, including plundering Gujarat in 1297 AD.
o Famous Monuments – Alai-Darwaza, Siri & Jamait Khanm.
Rana Sanga

His actual name is Maharana Sangram Singh. He is considered to be the last valiant
ruler of Rajputana. He fought the war against Mughal Emperor Babar.

o He is remembered for his determination and love for his country.

during wars.

Rajendra Chola 1

During his reign, the kingdom was called the Golden Age of Cholas. He was on eof
the first king to expand the empire beyond Indian peninsula.

Harshvardhana

Bimbisara

He was the king of Magadha, who belonged to the Haryanka dynasty. He used

Pulakeshin II

The most remarkable King of the Chalukya Dynasty. He was influential as well as a
benevolent administrator in Southern India.

o He was powerful enough to protect his southern empire from the aggressive

Bindusara

o He was the son of Chandragupta Maurya. He continued his legacy and the
extension of his empire through battles and marital pacts.

except Kalinga.
o He had 16 wives and 8 sons.

Tipu Sultan

He is known as Tiger of Mysore. He was named Sultan Fateh Ali Khan Shahab but
often called Tipu after the local saint Tipu Mastan Aulia.

Krishnadevaraya

Muhammad bin Tughluq

The most remarkable and exciting ruler of the Tughlaq dynasty. His life was full of

Sher Shah Suri

Hemachandra Vikramaditya

Hemachandra Bhargava, or Hemu, was the chief of the Army and Prime Minister
during the regime of Adil Shah Suri.

o He fought 22 battles without any setbacks.


o On the 22nd victory, he crowned himself as the Emperor of Delhi.
o His reign was short but remarkable.
