kaatuneet toistensa päälle ja peittivät nyt ikäänkuin suomukset
toisiaan. Kun puitten kaataminen enimmäkseen oli suoritettu
sydäntalvella paljon lumen aikana, oli niistä jäänyt aika korkeat
kannot törröttämään. Kaikkia puita ei kuitenkaan ollut jaksettu
kaataa, vaan oli sinne tänne jäänyt pystyyn isoja lakkapäähonkia.
"Kuka se Tikka on", sanoi Olli, joka oli lähtenyt miesten perästä
metsään ja nyt puuttui puheisiin.
"Kyllähän se niin on", myönnytteli Yrjö. "Ja sitä minäkin olen koko
ajan ajatellut ja siinä mielessä työtä tehnyt."
"Milloin ensi viikolla ensi kerran tulee sopiva päivä, niin silloin
poltetaan."
Koitti suuren kasken polttopäivä. Päivä oli kirkas ja vieno, tasainen
etelätuuli puhalsi. Jo päivän nousun aikaan oli kaikki siirtokunnan
väki liikkeellä, niin nuoret kuin vanhat. Kaikki olivat pukeutuneet työn
mukaan, yllä kevyet, huonot vaatteet, jaloissa tuohivirsut.
Sytyttäminen alettiin suuren huuhdan alareunasta. Valmistettiin
tulisoihtuja, pistettiin tuohikäärylöitä seipäiden neniin. Soihdut
kädessä alkoivat miehet juoksennella ympäri huuhtaa, sytytellen
kuivia risukasoja. Paksuna hulmusi savu monesta kohdasta, liekkiä
kohosi ilmaan ja sammui taas. Puut eivät olleet niin kuivia, että
olisivat heti syttyneet. Mutta vähitellen pääsi liekki suuremmista
risukasoista kovaan puuhun. Liekit nuoleskelivat kaatuneiden puiden
runkoja, vakaantuivat palamaan, syömään puuta syvemmälti. Siitä
ne levisivät eteenpäin, kulkivat oksia, rankoja myöten viereiseen
puuhun ja siitä seuraavaan. Vähitellen saatiin koko toinen reuna
sytytetyksi. Ja siitä se tuli alkoi kulkea suuren hakkuuksen sisään.
Sitä myöten kun liekit levisivät ja tulimeri kasvoi, kävi tulen voima
yhä kammottavammaksi. Siitä syntyi ääretön kuumuus. Liekit
leimahtelivat, kiemurtelivat, hulmusivat. Välistä näyttivät kielekkeet
aivan pilviä nuoleskelevan. Suunnattomat savumäärät kohosivat
taivaalle, peittäen sen suurien pilvien tavoin. Nämä hulmuavat
savupatsaat, savupilvet näkyivät mahdottoman kauas peninkulmien
taa.
"Hoi Jaakko, hoi pojat, tulkaa tänne metsän reunaan. Kutsu Annia
tänne myös. Missä se Antti on, hae, Olli, Anttikin tänne. — No Liisa,
joko on keitto valmis?"
Nokisina, palavissaan kokoontuivat siihen kaikki viertomiehet.
"Emme sentään kotiin voi lähteä. Ei niin hurjaa palvelijaa, kuin tuli
on, voi hetkeksikään jättää yksin. Voi syntyä suuria palamattomia
saarekkeita ja tuli voi pyrkiä karkaamaan ulkopuolelle luvallista
aluettaan."
Kun muutama suupala oli syöty, huomasi Yrjö, että tuli pyrki
huuhdan oikean puolisesta kulmauksesta leviämään ulkopuolelle
luvallista aluettaan. Hän hypähti heti ylös ja lähti kuokan kanssa
turvetta kiskomaan, kangella palavia rankoja nakkelemaan ja siten
tulta hillitsemään ja ohjailemaan sitä omille aloilleen. Jaakko seurasi
kohta perästä.
"Hoi Anni, missä päin sinä olet, kutsuhan Yrjöä avuksi, minä en
täältä pääse pois, olen aivan liekkien piirittämällä saarekkeella."
Jaakon huudon kuuli Anni. Mutta Yrjö oli kaukana. Hän oli
saatuaan kasken hyvään alkuun, kulkenut kasken reunaa,
katsomassa, ettei tuli pääsisi läheiseen pystyyn metsään leviämään.
Pälvipaikat saisi myöhemminkin polttaa, hän tuumaili. Kun Jaakko
rupesi apua huutelemaan, sattui hän olemaan aivan toisessa
reunassa kaskimaata, eikä huuto kuulunut minnekään räiskeen,
paukkeen ja liekkien ulvonnan vuoksi.
Siemenen haussa.
"Antti vainaalta jäi rahaa hyvä määrä. Silloin kun minä poikien
kanssa muutin vanhoilta asumapaikoilta tänne Ahmavaaralle, kätkin
minä nämä rahat maahan. Nyt on aika hakea ne esille kätköstä.
Niillä ostamme nyt siemenviljan, laskemme perustan uudelle
elämälle, niitten avulla taas rupeamme säännöllisiksi
maanviljelijöiksi, talonpojiksi."
"No mutta, miksi et ole ennen sanonut, olisi tässä rahoja ennenkin
tarvittu."

Antti oli aivan suunniltaan ilosta, kun Yrjö hänelle ilmoitti, että
Nopsa nyt oli hänen hevosensa.
