Read the two case studies below in which ICT is used as part of a lesson. As you read
each one, make notes on the positives and negatives of the teacher’s approach to
technology.

CASE STUDY 1

Positives

 Even though the professor wasn’t very happy about using the projector he still
tried to incorporate it into his next English lesson.
 Mr. Shabukali was creative and he found a way to teach the students irregular
verbs using the different tools at hand like the students’ books.

Negatives

 It was very difficult for the students at the back to see the slide.
 Students are afraid of talking to the professor because he is very strict.
 The professor went through the slides too quickly and some students were left
behind.
 Instead of trying to fix the mistakes and keep going, the professor got frustrated
and gave up.

CASE STUDY 2

Positives

 The professor knows how to connect her phone to the projector.

 She moves around the classroom helping the students who are facing difficulties
with the assignment.
 She checks that every student understands the assignment and that every student
can spell the key vocabulary.

Negatives

 She has a different approach to technology compared to her colleagues.

Next, note your responses to the following questions:

How could Mr. Shabukali use PowerPoint in a more learner focused way to encourage
active learning?

A/: Mr. Shabulki could have use PowerPoint in a more learner focused way by first learning
how to properly use this tool to enhance his lessons. He could have taught his lesson and
used PowerPoint as a visual aid rather than having the students just copying directly from
each slide.

How does Mrs. Bwalya’s approach to technology compare to the approach taken by Mr.
Shabukali? What are the strengths of her activity? Can you think of ways to improve it?

A/:
 Ms. Bwalya approach to technology compared to the approach taken by Mr.
Shabukali is that Ms. Bwalya takes a more creative approach to using technology,
involving group work and active learning.

 The strengths of her activity are that she chooses pictures that she has found
online showing the life cycle of a frog, she shows her students the pictures by
connecting her phone to the projector and she helps different groups of students
with any problems she can see that they are having.

 Mrs. Bwalya´s did a great job but there is always room for improvement, she could
surely keep on this path but apply other ICT tools to her classes and lessons.
