Acknowledgments
The text for this VSI was written and revised over a two-year
period. I am very grateful to my students at Lehman College,
CUNY, for their feedback on early versions of the manuscript as
I taught different iterations of a course called “Democracy:
Intellectual and Historical Developments.” Imogene Haslam,
as Project Editor, has provided expert coordination through
production. Thanks also to Production Management Executive
Ethiraju Saraswathi of Straive.com, for overseeing production.
My greatest debt for the coherence and readability of the book
is to Dr. Latha Menon, Senior Commissioning Editor for the
VSI Series. Latha provideded invaluable support through
revisions of both the initial proposal and the completed
manuscript. Her advice and editing were extraordinarily
conscientious and incisive, and I thank her for the existence of
the book.

En haut de la vallée, des tentes sont dressées à notre intention ;
