Dedication
This book is dedicated to our families, without whose
support and patience we would not have been able to write
it.
Acknowledgement
Many students at St George’s, University of London
contributed to the development of this book. We wish to
express our gratitude to them all, but particularly to those
who participated in the projects that generated the original
‘Top 100 Drugs’ list, and to the members of a focus group
convened to ensure the book would meet their needs. We
also thank Dr Selma Audi and, from the University of
Birmingham, Dr Sarah Pontefract and Professor Jamie
Coleman for their contributions to the analysis that
underpinned the second edition. This third edition is again
informed by an updated analysis of prescribing frequencies.
For their assistance in providing inpatient electronic
prescribing data, we would like to thank the Clinical
Informatics team at St George’s University Hospitals NHS
