Ans 1.
To determine the force in members DG and FI of the truss, a section a-a is passed through members DG,
DE, EF and FI as shown below.

The free body diagram of upper portion of cut section a-a are shown below.

Taking moment about B,

∑MB=0, we have,

Considering ∑F=0

For SFD and BMD equations are written for two sections
Taking section between B and C, taking x from B

Equation for shear force:
Therefore the shear force profile is linear and can be seen from the equation

Equation for bending moment:

Therefore the bending moment profile is parabolic and can be seen from the equation.
Point of zero moment between B and C is at

Now, taking section between A and C; taking x from B

Equation for shear force:

Therefore the shear force profile is parabolic and can be seen from the equation
Point of zero shear force between A and C is at

Equation for bending moment:

Therefore the bending moment profile in this portion is a cubic parabola and can be seen from the
equation.
Maximum moment occurs at the point of zero shear force and its value is

It is a single degree of freedom system, hence the rigid block moves to the left as the weight ‘W’ pulls the
inextensible string downwards. Vertical displacement ‘y’ of weight ‘W’ and the horizontal displacement
‘x’ of the rigid body can now be equated by applying Virtual Work Principle.

From the figure, we can obtain the relationship between ‘y’ and ‘x’ as,

Therefore, (4 marks)

Now we shall apply Virtual work principle to determine the relationship between the weight ‘W’ and
spring force ‘Fs’.
