for a new believer in Christ
After their miraculous release from the Philippian jail, Paul and Silas tell their repentant jailer, “Believe in the
│
Lord Jesus, and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31 TPT)
Their words are one of many expressions of the underlying message of the whole Bible: God has provided
salvation for the lost. Scripture is clear that all people need to be saved, and today we are looking at few
reasons why.
You were born into a fallen world and developed a sinful nature
When Adam sinned, the entire world was affected. Sin entered human experience, and death was the result.
And so death followed this sin, casting its shadow over all humanity, because all have sinned.
(Romans 5:12 TPT)│
Lord, I have been a sinner from birth, from the moment my mother conceived me. (Psalm 51:5 │ TPT)
Due to your sinful nature you have sinned
And the Scriptures agree, for it is written: There is no one who always does what is right, no, not even one!
There is no one with true spiritual insight, and there is no one who seeks after God alone. All have deliberately
wandered from God’s ways. All have become depraved and unfit. Kindness has disappeared from them all, not
│
even one is good. (Romans 3:10-12 TPT)
My purpose in writing is simply this: that you who believe in God’s Son will know beyond a shadow of a doubt that
│
you have eternal life, the reality and not the illusion. (1 John 5:13 MSG)
One day you will stand before the judgement throne of God
Therefore, each one must answer for himself and give personal account of his own life before God.
(Romans 14:12 TPT) │
WEEK 1
ASSURANCE OF SALVATION
Day 2: What’s up with sin?
We tend to think of sin as a specific behaviour, like cheating, stealing, lying or cursing. Although all
theses are sin inspired actions, sin goes much deeper than just behaviour.
The true essence of sin is rebellion. Everybody’s a rebel. Perhaps you don’t think you are a rebel when
you compare yourself to those around you, but when held up to the light of God’s standards, we’re all
guilty of various forms of rebellion. But God came to save us!
Because of Adam’s sin the whole earth and every human being is affected
When Adam sinned, the entire world was affected. Sin entered human experience, and death was the
result. And so death followed this sin, casting its shadow over all humanity, because all have sinned.
│
(Romans 5:12 TPT)
Your rebellion is seen in your unwillingness to submit your will to the will of God
Don’t make him angry by hardening your hearts, like your ancestors did during the days of their rebellion,
when they were tested in the wilderness. There your fathers tested me and tried my patience even though
they saw my miracles for forty years they still doubted me! (Hebrews 3:8-9 TPT)│
Trust in the Lord completely, and do not rely on your own opinions. With all your heart rely on him to guide
you, and he will lead you in every decision you make. Become intimate with him in whatever you do, and he
will lead you wherever you go. Don’t think for a moment that you know it all, for wisdom comes when you
adore him with undivided devotion and avoid everything that’s wrong. Then you will find the healing
│
refreshment your body and spirit long for. (Proverbs 3:5-8 TPT)
WEEK 1
ASSURANCE OF SALVATION
Day 3: God loves you
This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why:
so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in Him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life.
God didn’t go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the
world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again.
God demonstrated His love to you by giving His Son to die for your sins
This is how God showed his love for us: God sent his only Son into the world so we might live
through him. This is the kind of love we are talking about—not that we once upon a time loved
God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to clear away our sins and the damage
│
they’ve done to our relationship with God. (1 John 4:9-10 MSG)
No one has greater love [no one has shown stronger affection] than to lay down (give up) his own
│
life for his friends. (John 15:13 AMP)
Can a mother forget her nursing child? Can she feel no love for the child she has borne? But even
if that were possible, I would not forget you! See, I have written your name on the palms of my
│
hands. (Isaiah 49:15-16 NLT)
God’s loyal love couldn’t have run out, his merciful love couldn’t have dried up. They’re created
new every morning. How great your faithfulness! (Lamentations 3:22-24 MSG) │
God loved you when you deserved it least
But Christ proved God’s passionate love for us by dying in our place while we were still lost and
ungodly! (Romans 5:8 │ TPT)
Because of His love, God adopted you as His child – you are now a child of God
Look with wonder at the depth of the Father’s marvelous love that he has lavished on us! He has
│
called us and made us his very own beloved children. (1 John 3:1 TPT)
WEEK 1
ASSURANCE OF SALVATION
Day 4: God has forgiven you
Our rebellion against God and our many other offenses warrant full condemnation for our sins,
but God offers to pay the penalty Himself.
In Jesus, God became flesh, lived a sinless life, and offered Himself as a sacrifice on a cruel
Roman cross. Through Jesus, God paid the penalty for all our sins. We are now set free to live
the life for which we were created.
But our High Priest offered himself to God as a single sacrifice for sins, good for all time. Then he
│
sat down in the place of honour at God’s right hand. (Hebrews 10:12 NLT)
Because of the perfect sacrifice of Jesus, you no longer have to feel guilty about your past
sinful life
So now the case is closed. There remains no accusing voice of condemnation against those who
are joined in life-union with Jesus, the Anointed One. (Romans 8:1 TPT)│
God has forgiven and forgotten your past sinful life
He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west. (Psalm 103:12 │ NLT)
He concludes, I’ll forever wipe the slate clean of their sins. (Hebrews 10:17 │ MSG)
You’ll stamp out our wrongdoing. You’ll sink our sins to the bottom of the ocean.
│
(Micah 7:19 MSG)
I, yes I, am the One and Only, who completely erases your sins, never to be seen again. I will not
remember them again. Freely I do this because of who I am! (Isaiah 43:25 TPT) │
WEEK 1
ASSURANCE OF SALVATION
Day 5: A new beginning
King David is a very well-known figure in the Bible. Many of the Psalms are written by him.
David was not a perfect man. He did many unthinkable things. The one thing that caused David
to be such a prominent figure in the Bible is the fact that David understood God’s love, grace
and mercy.
God made my life complete when I placed all the pieces before him. When I cleaned up my act, he
gave me a fresh start. Indeed, I’ve kept alert to God’s ways; I haven’t taken God for granted. Every
day I review the ways he works, I try not to miss a trick. I feel put back together, and I’m watching
my step. God rewrote the text of my life when I opened the book of my heart to his eyes.
│
(2 Samuel 22:21-25 MSG)
God declares you “not guilty” and treats you as if you never sinned before
It’s true that some of you once lived in those lifestyles, but now you have been purified from sin,
made holy, and given a perfect standing before God—all because of the power of the name of the
Lord Jesus, the Messiah, and through our union with the Spirit of our God.
│
(1 Corinthians 6:11 TPT)
Our faith in Jesus transfers God’s righteousness to us and he now declares us flawless in his eyes.
This means we can now enjoy true and lasting peace with God, all because of what our Lord
│
Jesus, the Anointed One, has done for us. (Romans 5:1 TPT)
WEEK 2
WATER BAPTISM
Day 1: What is baptism in water
Baptism in water is a command from Jesus, He set the example for us Himself. It is a public
testimony that you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour.
“God authorised and commanded me to commission you: Go out and train everyone you meet,
far and near, in this way of life, marking them by baptism in the threefold name: Father, Son, and
Holy Spirit. Then instruct them in the practice of all I have commanded you. I’ll be with you as you
│
do this, day after day after day, right up to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:19-20 MSG)
Peter replied, “Repent and return to God, and each one of you must be baptised in the name of
Jesus, the Anointed One, to have your sins removed. Then you may take hold of the gift of the
│
Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:38 TPT)
According to the Bible, baptism in water is a very important part of every believer’s spiritual
life. In day two, we will explore the many reasons why, as we go through the scriptures,
learning more about God’s Word.
Jesus commanded it
God authorised and commanded me to commission you: Go out and train everyone you meet,
far and near, in this way of life, marking them by baptism in the threefold name: Father, Son,
and Holy Spirit. Then instruct them in the practice of all I have commanded you. I’ll be with you
as you do this, day after day after day, right up to the end of the age.
│
(Matthew 28:19-20 MSG)
Jesus modelled it
Then Jesus left Galilee to come to the Jordan to be baptised by John. But when he waded
into the water, John resisted him, saying, “Why are you doing this? I’m the one who needs to
be baptised by you, and yet you come to be baptised by me?” Jesus replied, “It is only right to
do all that God requires.” Then John baptised Jesus. (Matthew 3:13-15 TPT)│
Baptism is a vital and powerful testimony
So there are three witnesses in heaven: the Father, the Word and the Holy Spirit, and these
three witnesses on earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree [are in
│
unison; their testimony coincides]. (1 John 5:7-8 AMP)
Baptism is a declaration
Baptism declares that you are a follower of Jesus Christ. It is a public confession of your
faith in, and commitment to, Jesus Christ.
WATER BAPTISM
Day 3: Who should be baptised?
For centuries baptism, and specifically who should be baptised, has been a point of
disagreement within the church. When we look at the New Testament, especially the
Book of Acts, we’ll discover a very distinct pattern.
As they were traveling down the road, the man said, “Look, here’s a pool of water. Why
don’t I get baptised right now?” Philip replied, “If you believe with all your heart, I’ll baptise
you.” The man answered, “I believe that Jesus is the Anointed One, the Son of God.” The
Ethiopian stopped his chariot, and they went down into the water and Philip baptised
│
him. (Acts 8:36-38 TPT)
Crispus, the leader of the synagogue, believed in the Lord, together with his entire family,
and many of the Corinthians who heard what had happened believed in the Lord and were
baptised. (Acts 18:8 TPT)│
Faith in Jesus, as the Son of God, is a prerequisite for baptism
But as Philip preached the wonderful news of God’s kingdom realm, and the name of
Jesus the Anointed One, many believed his message and were baptised, both men and
women. (Acts 8:12 TPT) │
WATER BAPTISM
Day 4: Do you need to be baptised to be saved
The Bible clearly teaches that salvation is acquired by grace through faith alone
He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not
│
see life, but the wrath of God abides on him. (John 3:36 NKJV)
Then he led Paul and Silas outside and asked, “What must I do to be saved?” They answered,
“Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved—you and all your family.”
│
(Acts 16:30-31 TPT)
Salvation comes through believing in your heart and confessing with your mouth
That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has
raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto
righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
│
(Romans 10:9-10 NKJV)
WATER BAPTISM
Day 5: How should a person be baptised
The best source to clarify this question is to look at the meaning of the word used for “baptism”
in the Greek language. Our word “baptism” comes from a Greek word which literally means to dip,
to immerse or to submerge. Today we will look at the scriptures as they teach us through the
example of Jesus.
Immersion symbolises the burial of the “old person” and the resurrection into a “new life” in
Christ
A person, therefore, gets baptised by being totally immersed in water. This was the method of
baptism in the New Testament and the early church. According to church literature within the
first 200 years of the churches’ existence, there is no indication of any other means of baptism.
So what do we do? Keep on sinning so God can keep on forgiving? I should hope not! If we’ve left the
country where sin is sovereign, how can we still live in our old house there? Or didn’t you realise we
packed up and left there for good? That is what happened in baptism. When we went under the
water, we left the old country of sin behind; when we came up out of the water, we entered into the
new country of grace—a new life in a new land! That’s what baptism into the life of Jesus means.
When we are lowered into the water, it is like the burial of Jesus; when we are raised up out of the
water, it is like the resurrection of Jesus. Each of us is raised into a light-filled world by our Father
so that we can see where we’re going in our new grace-sovereign country. (Romans 6:2-5 MSG) │
The following scriptures are an indication of immersion as the method of baptism
And as Jesus rose up out of the water, the heavenly realm opened up over him and he saw the Holy
Spirit descend out of the heavens and rest upon him in the form of a dove. (Matthew 3:16 TPT) │
At this time John was still baptising people at Aenon, near Salim, where there was plenty of water,
and the people kept coming for John to baptise them. (John 3:23 TPT) │
A steady stream of people came to be dipped in the Jordan River as they publicly confessed their
sins. They came from all over southern Israel, including nearly all the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
│
(Mark 1:5 TPT)
And he ordered that the chariot be stopped; and both Philip and the eunuch went down into the
│
water, and Philip baptised him. (Acts 8:38 AMP)
WEEK 3
HOLY SPIRIT BAPTISM Day 1: Who is the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is not a thing, force or some kind of mystical force. The Holy Spirit is a Divine Person with a
specific personality and specific characteristics. For this reason, us as Christians can have a dynamic
relationship with the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit periodically showed up in the Old Testament to empower a specific person for a
specific task
Saul turned and left Samuel. At that very moment God transformed him—made him a new person! And all the
confirming signs took place the same day. When Saul and his party got to Gibeah, there were the prophets,
right in front of them! Before he knew it, the Spirit of God came on Saul and he was prophesying right along
│
with them. (1 Samuel 10:9-10 MSG)
Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit to represent Him in the lives of His followers
If you love me, show it by doing what I’ve told you. I will talk to the Father, and He’ll provide you another Friend
so that you will always have someone with you. This Friend is the Spirit of Truth. The godless world can’t take
him in because it doesn’t have eyes to see him, doesn’t know what to look for. But you know him already
│
because he has been staying with you, and will even be in you! (John 14:15-17 MSG)
However, I am telling you nothing but the truth when I say it is profitable (good, expedient, advantageous) for
you that I go away. Because if I do not go away, the Comforter (Counsellor, Helper, Advocate, Intercessor,
Strengthener, Standby) will not come to you [into close fellowship with you]; but if I go away, I will send Him to
│
you [to be in close fellowship with you]. (John 16:7 AMP)
WEEK 3
HOLY SPIRIT BAPTISM
Day 2: When does a person receive the Holy Spirit?
At your salvation we find the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit working
together as a dynamic team. It’s the Father who initiates this love
relationships by drawing you closer to Him. It was Jesus who gave
His life so that your relationship with the Father could be restored.
As part of day two, we will learn more about the role of the Holy
Spirit.
The Holy Spirt convicts you of your sin and your need of salvation
And when He [the Holy Spirit] has come, He will convict the world of
│
sin, and of righteousness, and of judgement… (John 16:8 NKJV)
It’s the Holy Spirit who now lives in you from the moment you
accept Jesus as your Lord and Saviour
And now you Gentiles have also heard the truth, the Good News that
God saves you. And when you believed in Christ, He identified you as
his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom He promised long ago.
│
(Ephesians 1:13 NLT)
The baptism in the Holy Spirit is a very unique and powerful experience after salvation. This
experience is a supernatural empowerment to live this new life received.
The baptism in the Holy Spirit was already promised in the Old Testament
And it shall come to pass afterward that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your
daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions. And also
on My menservants and on My maidservants, I will pour out My Spirit in those days.
│
(Joel 2:28-29 NKJV)
Before Jesus ascended into heaven, He challenged His disciples to wait for the Baptism in the
Holy Spirit
Once when he was eating with them, he commanded them, “Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father
sends you the gift He promised, as I told you before. John baptised with water, but in just a few days
│
you will be baptised with the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 1:4-5 NLT)
Then all at once a pillar of fire appeared before their eyes. It separated into tongues of fire that
engulfed each one of them. They were all filled and equipped with the Holy Spirit and were inspired to
speak in tongues—empowered by the Spirit to speak in languages they had never learned!
│
(Acts 2:3-4 TPT)
Speaking in tongues is the first and primary sign of being baptised in the Holy Spirit
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave
│
them utterance. (Acts 2:4 NKJV)
And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because
the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. For they heard them speak with
│
tongues and magnify God. (Acts 10:45-46 NKJV)
And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues
│
and prophesied. (Acts 19:6 NKJV)
WEEK 3
HOLY SPIRIT BAPTISM Day 4: What is speaking in tongues?
One of the most important principles to understand regarding the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is that it is not
just reserved for a selected few people. This experience is the heritage of every child of God.
The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a free gift to be received, it’s not something you have to work for
Peter replied, “Repent and return to God, and each one of you must be baptised in the name of Jesus, the
Anointed One, to have your sins removed. Then you may take hold of the gift of the Holy Spirit. For God’s
promise of the Holy Spirit is for you and your families, for those yet to be born and for everyone whom the
│
Lord our God calls to himself.” (Acts 2:38-39 TPT)
Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, a distance of half a mile. When they
arrived, they went to the upstairs room of the house where they were staying… They all met together and
were constantly united in prayer, along with Mary the mother of Jesus, several other women, and the brothers
│
of Jesus. (Acts 1:12-14 NLT)
Be willing to bypass your intellect when you speak in tongues, so your mind is not involved
For if I am praying in a tongue, my spirit is engaged in prayer but I have no clear understanding of what is
│
being said. (1 Corinthians 14:14 TPT)
