5.2 The primer shall be of the fast-drying type. Its only purpose shall be to maintain
the surface cleanliness condition of the abrasive blasted steel pipe surface prior
to tape application. It shall not in any way be required in order to promote
adhesion of the tape to the pipe.

5.3 The Vendor may select any of the Buyer-approved products or an equal
alternative agreed upon by the Buyer in writing. Proposed alternative materials
(i.e., materials not previously approved) must pass the qualification tests
outlined in Appendix A of this Specification.

5.4 Tape rolls shall be packaged in a closed (but not necessarily sealed) plastic bag
placed inside a sealed, dust-proof, heavy duty cardboard box.

5.4.1 Boxes shall not contain more than one size of tape.

5.4.2 Boxes shall be shipped in solid sided wooden crates, or equivalent, to

prevent damage in transit. Palletizing is not an acceptable alternative.

5.4.3 The boxes shall be clearly stenciled with the Vendor's name, product
name, batch number, date of manufacture, and the appropriate Saudi
Aramco 9COM or 9CAT stock number.

5.5 Primer shall be shipped in metal containers meeting the requirements of

1.1 For purposes of this Procedure, the Buyer's Representative is the Responsible
Standardization Agency (RSA).

1.2 In order to qualify tapewrap and primer as acceptable under this Specification, the
tapewrap and primer supplier shall submit for Saudi Aramco (RSA) approval a
certified test report that the proposed tapewrap and primer meets the qualification
test and requirements of this SAMSS with the preparation and testing performed
and/or witnessed by an independent laboratory or inspection agency.

1.3 All qualification tests shall be carried out at no cost to Saudi Aramco. The RSA
shall decide if the data presented by the Supplier satisfies the requirements of
the tests outlined below.

2 References

References noted below shall be the latest edition, addenda or revision in effect on the
date the qualification tests are carried out unless stated otherwise.

3 Qualification Tests

3.1 Verification of Pressure Sensitive Quality of the Tape

When tested at 23°C in accordance with ASTM D1000, the 180 degrees peel
strength shall meet the following requirements:

At least 20 N/25 mm for:

a) Tape to tape
b) Tape to bare steel
c) Tape to primed steel (primer completely dry before tape application)
d) Tape to steel coated with fusion bonded epoxy per 09-SAMSS-089
e) Tape to steel coated with polyethylene per 09-SAMSS-090

3.2 Stiffness

When tested at 23°C in accordance with ASTM D638 the modulus of elasticity of
the tape backing at 10% strain shall not be less than 30 N/mm². A minimum of 5
samples shall be tested. The lowest single value shall not be less than 15 N/mm².

3.3 Suitability for Outdoors Storage

After 6 months exposure at 53 + 3°C a roll of 150 mm wide tape stored with its
core vertical shall exhibit no evidence of adhesive slump. The tape shall be
examined after cooling down to 23 + 3°C by unwrapping the entire roll and
removing the release paper.

3.4 Resistance to Long-term Thermal Degradation

3.4.1 When tested in accordance with paragraph 5 of this Specification, tape

samples aged for 28 days at 100°C shall exhibit the following
characteristics:

3.4.1.1 There shall be no increase in the length or width dimensions

(shrinkage is acceptable).

3.4.1.2 There shall be no evidence of separation between the backing

and the adhesive.

3.4.1.3 Slight curling at the edges is allowable but the sample shall
not roll up.

3.4.2 After aging for 6 months at 80 + 3°C in an oven, duplicate tape

samples applied to pipe of nominal bore 3 + 1 inches and length at
least 300 mm shall show no signs of cracks, separations, swelling, edge
curling, or elongation. Remaining adhesive thickness shall not be less
than 50% of the original thickness at all locations.

3.4.3 When tested at 23°C in accordance with ASTM D638 the elongation at
failure in a tensile test of samples aged for 3 months at 80°C shall not
be less than 40% of that for the as-received samples.

3.5 Resistance to Cathodic Disbonding

When tested for 30 days at 23°C in accordance with ASTM G8 and 60°C in
accordance with ASTM G42, Method A, the maximum radius of disbondment
shall not exceed 30 mm both for samples in the as-received condition and for
samples subjected to the immersion test in paragraph 3.6 of this Specification.

3.6 Suitability for Immersion Service

After 6 months immersion in distilled water at 60°C duplicate samples shall show
no evidence of disbonding at prepared holidays and no evidence of corrosion
under the tape. The tests shall be carried out in accordance with ASTM G20
except that the coated portion of the pipe samples shall be at least 300 mm long
and the samples shall be entirely submerged. The tape overlap areas shall not be
pressed or rolled by any mechanical means prior to or during the immersion test.

3.7 Impact Resistance

When tested at 23°C in accordance with ASTM G13 a single layer of tape shall
be able to withstand at least 5 drops without failure.

4 Additional Requirements

4.1 The following test results shall be supplied to the RSA for information purposes.
The RSA may use these test results at a later date for product compliance
purposes to ensure that products as supplied are the products tested and
approved in accordance with this Specification.

Next Planned Update: 6 January 2013 Tapewrap for Temperatures up to 55°C

b) Thermal Mechanical Analysis (TMA) Test in accordance with the test

method given in 09-SAMSS-099, Chapter 6.

4.2 Materials meeting the other requirements of this Procedure shall be subjected to
a full-scale field test prior to approval to ensure their suitability under actual
construction and service conditions.

5 Test Method for Dimensional Stability after Aging

5.1 Triplicate tape samples measuring 250 mm + 10 mm long by at least

100 mm + 10 mm wide are cut from as-received tape material.

5.2 Using a sharp knife, a gauge reference mark in the form of a small cross is cut in
the center of each of the four sides of the tape sample within 25 mm of the edge.

5.3 The release paper is removed and the tape is laid on a piece of thin gauge
aluminum baking foil that has been crumpled and then partially straightened.

5.4 The gauge length and width of the tape samples are measured and recorded
to + 0.2 mm.

5.5 The samples are placed on flat steel plates and put in an oven for 28 days at a
temperature of 100 + 1°C.

5.6 After exposure the samples are allowed to cool to room temperature and the
distances between the gauge reference marks are measured to + 0.2 mm and
recorded.

5.7 The percentage change (shrinkage or elongation) in the gauge length and gauge
width are calculated and recorded.

5.8 The visual appearance of the samples is recorded.
