The water cycle, also known as the hydrological cycle, is the continuous movement of
water on, above, and below the surface of the Earth. It involves several key processes:
evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection. Evaporation occurs when the
sun heats up water in rivers, lakes, or oceans, causing it to turn into vapour and rise
into the atmosphere. Plants also contribute to this process through transpiration. As the
water vapour rises, it cools and condenses to form clouds. This process is known as
condensation. When the clouds become heavy with water droplets, they release the
water back to the Earth's surface in the form of precipitation, such as rain, snow, sleet,
or hail. The precipitation collects in bodies of water like rivers, lakes, and oceans, and
the cycle begins anew. Some of the water also infiltrates the ground, replenishing
groundwater supplies. The water cycle is essential for maintaining life on Earth, as it
regulates climate, supports plant growth, and provides fresh water for all living
organisms.
