3.2 4WD Layout
• The transfer case transfers power from the transmission
to the front and rear axles by means of drive shafts.
• The Transfer Case in the Scorpio-N is an Electric Shift-
on-Fly Transfer Case with 3 modes 2WD – 4WH – 4WL.
• When 4WH mode is selected, direct torque transmission
is done to all 4 Wheels.
• When 4WL mode is selected, torque multiplication is
done by 2.48 times & then transmitted to all 4-wheels.
Do not drive with 4-Wheel Drive engaged (4WH/4WL)
on the hard-paved surface to avoid damage to the
drivetrain. The Scorpio-N is a part-time 4WD and is not
meant to be driven in 4WH/4WL on the hard-paved

3.3 Electronic Front Axle Disconnect/ eDisconnect

The eDisconnect system enables the front differential, which is driven by the front propeller shaft of the transfer case, to
freewheel in 2WD drive mode in order to reduce the parasitic drag from these unused components and as well as reduce
the wear & tear of the front differential components.

The eDisconnect consists of a sliding sleeve splined to one half of the split axle shaft and a shifting fork to move the
sleeve & then lock the two parts of axle shaft together when 4WD mode (4WH/4WL mode) are selected. The movement
of the shifting fork is actuated/ controlled by the electronic actuator.

Note –
The eDisconnect might take some time to disengage fully. If the whining noise is experienced while driving, after
disengaging 4WD mode then stop the vehicle, wait for some time and then launch the vehicle.

3.4 Brake Locking Differential (BLD)
BLD functions controls the wheel spin across a drive axle. If one wheel on a driven axle is spinning faster than the other,
the system will apply the brake of the spinning
wheel. This will allow more engine torque to be
applied to the wheel that is not spinning.

BLD will get activated automatically, when the

driver engages 4WL (4WD Low) mode.

During this time other ESP stability features will

remain inactive, which is indicated by ESP OFF
telltale lamp.

3.5 Mechanical Locking Differential

Mechanical Locking Differential (MLD) is a locking
differential which locks the rear axle
automatically when any of the wheel is spinning
faster relative to the other wheel which is on the
traction surface & the wheel-to-wheel speed
difference exceeds predefined limit.

The MLD will lock the axle for transferring the

torque to the wheel on the traction surface.

Both the locking & unlocking will take place

automatically.

17.1.3 SCR system
Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) is an advanced active emissions control technology system that injects a liquid-
reducing agent known as Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF), into the exhaust stream of a diesel engine.

The DEF sets off a chemical reaction that converts nitrogen oxides (NOX) present in the exhaust stream into Nitrogen (N2),
water and small amounts of Carbon dioxide (CO2)
