Preface

This book is specifically designed for younger kids who

have a thirst for knowledge. Covering the basics of general
knowledge, this book aims to encourage curiosity in young
minds and form a strong foundation for their future.

While we have made every effort to update the

information in this book in a simple manner for easy
understanding by young students. In this fast-moving
world, a lot changes in a split second. Therefore, nothing
replaces asking questions, staying current, and reading
regularly to keep us all updated. This is our modest effort
to cover the basics of General Knowledge, both of the
world and India.

Our other books from classes 4-12 cover many more

subjects such as how the universe came into being, how
humans evolved, the history of the world, the history of
India, current events, miscellaneous facts and much more.

1. UNIVERSE
The Universe is made up of several galaxies. Each galaxy is
further made up of a large group of planets, stars, dust, and
other planetary bodies, held together by gravity. Milky Way is
the galaxy that contains our solar system. The closest spiral
galaxy to us is the Andromeda Galaxy, which is 2.5 million light
years from the Earth (light years are a unit of measurement of
distance used in astronomy).

MILKY WAY GALAXY CLOSE-UP OF THE SUN

Our Solar System contains planets, the sun, moons, stars, and
several other space objects such as black holes, comets,
asteroids, etc.

The Sun is at the center of our Solar System. All planets revolve
around the Sun, the largest star and is a giant ball of very hot
gases. It takes 8 minutes for sunlight to reach the Earth's
surface.

Stars are huge, glowing balls of gases, and are usually

between 1 and 10 billion years old. The closest star to Earth is
the Sun. Stars burn their fuel very slowly so they live for several
years, mostly over 100 billion years. On any clear night, if you
look up you will see several shining stars that light up the sky.

STARS SHINING ON A NIGHT SKY

The Moon is Earth's only natural

satellite, that orbits, or travels around
our planet. They are formed during the
collision between the Earth and other
small planets. Mercury and Venus are
the only planets that do not have a
moon. Earth has one moon, while
Jupiter has 79 moons. After the Sun, it
is the brightest object in the sky.
THE MOON

The objects that revolve around the Sun are called Planets.
There are 8 planets in our Solar System, and each of these
planets revolves around the Sun. The planets in our solar system
are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus,
Neptune. (Pluto was a planet earlier but was downgraded to a
dwarf planet in 2006).

THE SUN AND PLANETS OF OUR SOLAR SYSTEM

6
GK FOR KIDS - SUB-JUNIOR

Mercury is closest to the Sun. It has no life since its surface is

made of several craters. Venus is almost as large as Earth but
does not have any atmosphere, hence life cannot exist. Earth is
at the right distance from the Sun, and has air, water, and heat,
which makes it possible for life. Earth has one moon, that
revolves around it.

Mars is cold and covered with red dust, hence it is also called
'The Red Planet'. Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system.
There are several storms on the planet, hence it is also called
'The Stormy Planet'. It has a big red spot, where a storm has
been raging for the last 300 years. This is called 'The Eye of
Jupiter'.

MARS - RED PLANET THE EYE OF JUPITER SATURN WITH ITS RINGS

Saturn is the second largest planet and is made up of mostly

gases, hence it is also called 'Gas Giant'. Millions of rock and ice
pieces move around the planet, which from far, make it look like
there are several rings around the planet. Uranus is the 7th
planet from the sun. It is 3rd largest planet and has 27 moons.
Neptune is the farthest and coldest planet.

Why does life exist only on Earth?

Air and water are very important for any life to exist. Earth is
surrounded by a layer of air called the atmosphere, which is held
in place by Earth's gravity. The atmosphere protects the Earth
from Sun's harmful radiation. It also contains various gases, of
which oxygen is the most important for humans since we breathe
in oxygen. Water is found only on Earth, which makes it the most
suitable planet for human beings.

7
GK FOR KIDS - SUB-JUNIOR

Before we go any further, it is important to

know the difference between living things and
non-living things.

Living things
Living things are those that grow, move, breathe, eat, feel,
think, etc. They are able to do things on their own. Eg: human
beings, animals, plants.

Plants through a process called photosynthesis which helps

them create their own food and release oxygen. Human
beings breathe in this oxygen. The carbon dioxide that human
beings breathe out, is important for plants to create their food.
Hence, plants are important for human survival.

HUMAN BEINGS ANIMALS PLANTS

Non-Living things
Non-living things are not alive. They do not grow, move, breathe,
eat, feel, or think.
eg: Books, balls, toys etc.

2. EARTH
The planets that are close to the Sun are very hot, and those
that are far from the Sun are very cold. Since Earth is neither
too far nor too close, it is the perfect home for humans. Earth
has the perfect mix of air, heat, and water, and is the only
planet that has life.
This is the photo taken of the Earth
from space. The blue areas are water
bodies (eg. seas, oceans, rivers and
lakes); and green areas are land. We
live on land. Houses, buildings, offices,
and schools are built on land. 71% of
Earth surface is covered in water,
hence it is also called the 'Blue Planet'.

EARTH FROM SPACE

Earlier it was believed that the Earth is flat. However, voyageurs

set out in ships and travelled for long journeys. It took them 3
years of travelling to reach the same spot from where they
started, which proved that the earth is round in shape.

The actual shape of the Earth is of a sphere and it is slightly

flattened at the poles. The top of the Earth is called the North
Pole, and the bottom is called the South Pole.

Does the Earth move?

The Earth revolves around its own axis and this is called Earth's
rotation. This causes day and night. It also revolves around the
Sun, which is called its revolution. Due to Earth's revolution
around the Sun, we experience different seasons on Earth.

9
GK FOR KIDS - SUB-JUNIOR

Why is it Day in Africa and

Night in Asia?

What causes day and night

on Earth?

The Earth is a sphere which spins on its axis around the sun. The
side of the Earth facing the sun, gets sunlight and experiences
day. The other side, which is not facing the sun, is dark and cold,
and experiences night. The Earth rotates around the sun every
24 hours, hence 1 day is 24 hours.

What causes seasons?

The Earth revolves around the Sun. It takes the Earth 365 (1
year) days to complete one revolution around the Sun. This is
what causes seasons. We experience 4 seasons on Earth -
Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn.

If the Earth rotates on its own axis,

and revolves round the Sun, then why
don't we fall?

This is because of gravity. Gravity is

a force that pulls everything to the
ground. Take a pencil, hold it high
and then drop it to the ground. It
falls down due to gravity.

10
GK FOR KIDS - SUB-JUNIOR

The Earth has 4 layers:

Inner Core: Solid due to pressure and heat

Outer Core: Liquid, made of iron and nickel

Mantle: This layer is around 2,000 miles thick

Crust: Outermost and thinnest layer

The Earth's surface is composed of land masses, water bodies,

and the atmosphere. The huge land masses, which form about
1/4th of Earth are called Continents. The seven continents are:
Asia (the largest), Europe, Africa, North America, South America,
Antarctica, and Australia (the smallest).

The large water bodies on Earth are called Oceans. There are
five oceans - the Pacific Ocean (the largest), the Atlantic Ocean,
the Indian Ocean, the Antarctic Ocean, and the Arctic Ocean (the
smallest). Oceans contain 97% of the Earth's water. But this water
is very salty and hence we cannot drink it.

Earth's atmosphere is an invisible layer of gases, water vapour

and dust held by gravity. It acts as a filter and protects the Earth
from sun's harmful ultra-violet rays. It also keeps the Earth warm.

To know the location of any of the seven continents, the 195

countries, the five oceans, and any other place, maps have been
created of the Earth's surface. People who make maps are called
Cartographers, and the art of making maps is called
Cartography. There are 4 directions that are used in maps -
North, East, West and South. A compass, is the instrument used to
find directions by travellers and cartographers.

11
GK FOR KIDS - SUB-JUNIOR

Before going further, let's learn about the natural resources

found on Earth.

Air, Water and Soil are very important

natural resources (those that are present
in nature) for humans, animals and plants.

Air: We cannot see air, but we can feel it. Air is all around us.
We need oxygen from the air to breathe, and we breathe out
carbon dioxide. Air contains 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen. The
movement of air also brings us rain during monsoon.

Water: Water is essential for humans to live, and we need water

to grow. We get water from rain, rivers, lakes, oceans, and seas.
Rainwater that seeps into the ground is called underground
water. We dig wells to be able to use this underground water.
The water found in the ocean is salty and hence cannot be
drunk directly. Only 3% of water found on Earth is in the form of
freshwater, of which 98% is trapped in glaciers. A very small
portion of freshwater is found in rivers and lakes.

Soil: Soil provides water, nutrients and minerals for plants to

grow. We need plants for our survival. Soil contains minerals
like iron, zinc etc. and holds water which plants absorb.

WATER SOIL

3. PLANTS
Plants are a very important part of nature. They can live on
land and in water. Plants are very useful to us and we get
many things from plants such as food, wood, and paper. Most
of the food that we eat comes from plants for example - fruits,
vegetables, cereals, pulses, etc. We also eat roots, leaves,
stems, and flowers.

ORANGE TREE ROSE FLOWER

Parts of a Plant
Roots lie under the ground and originate from the lower
portion of the plant. They lie in the soil. Roots help in 2 ways:
Hold the plant in place by anchoring the plant to the soil.
Provide food to the plant by absorbing water and nutrients
from the soil.
The Stem is the upper part of the plant. It holds the plant in
place and helps take food from the roots to each and every
part of the plant. It connects the roots with the rest of the
plant.

Leaves are the greenest part of the plant. Leaves are mainly
green due to the presence of a substance called chlorophyll.
The process by which plants prepare food is called
photosynthesis. For this they require water, sunlight, nutrients,
and carbon dioxide.

What do Plants provide for us?

Plants are extremely valuable for us. They provide us with so
many things. Such as:
Food: We get fruits (apples, oranges, bananas, grapes,
melon etc), vegetables (potatoes, carrots, beans, onions,
spinach, etc), pulses (dal, lentils), spices (coriander, chilli, etc),
and grains (rice, wheat, barley, maize etc) from plants.
Flowers: Flowers are sweet smelling, and are used for
decoration and making perfumes.
Oxygen: Plants need carbon dioxide for photosynthesis and
give out oxygen. All humans and animals need oxygen to
breathe.

Types of Plants
There are 5 types of plants:

1. Trees have a thick layer, called bark, and are large plants
with several branches and leaves. Many trees bear fruits or
flowers. Trees live for several years.
eg: Mango tree, Apple Tree.

MANGO TREE APPLE TREE

2.Shrubs are smaller than trees and have many branches and
leaves.
eg: Rose bush.
3. Herbs are much smaller with delicate stems, and so they
can be easily uprooted from the soil. Herbs are grown for
their nutritional value.
eg: Tulsi, curry leaves, mint.

ROSE BUSH TULSI

15
GK FOR KIDS - SUB-JUNIOR

4. Climbers are small plants with weak stems that cannot stand
straight. They require support to be upright.
eg: Money plant, pea plant.
5. Creepers have even weaker stems, and they creep on the
ground (as the name suggests). They cannot support their
weight.
eg: Strawberry plant.

MONEY PLANT STRAWBERRY PLANT

Life Cycle of Plants

The life cycle begins with the seed,
which absorbs water and swells.
The root then emerges out and
begins to develop so it can absorb
water and other nutrients from the
soil. A tender stem emerges,
growing in the direction of the sun.
The tip of the stem has the leaf.

As the roots absorb more nutrients,

it develops into an extensive
system and provides for the stem
to develop into a plant with
several leaves, flowers, or fruits.

4. ANIMALS
Animals are living beings that need food, water, and shelter for
their survival. There are mainly 3 broad types of animals:

1) Wild animals: These animals stay in the jungle or forest. They

hunt other animals or eat plants. They live on land (lions, tigers,
snakes, etc), or in water (sharks, whales, dolphins, etc).

LION TIGER SNAKE

SHARK WHALE DOLPHIN

Some animals such as turtles, frogs etc can live on both land
and water and are called amphibians. The animals that fly are
called birds.

FROG TURTLE BIRDS

17
GK FOR KIDS - SUB-JUNIOR

2) Farm animals: The animals that humans rear for their needs
(food, fur, work etc) are called farm animals. Humans give them
shelter, and food. We get fur from sheeps, milk from goats, and
cows and eggs from chickens.

SHEEP GOAT CHICKEN

3) Pet animals: Humans also keep some animals for fun. These
are called pets. Eg: dogs, cats, parrots etc.

Based on the food they eat, animals are further classified into:
Herbivores: Animals who only eat plants are called
herbivores. Eg: cows, goats, deer, and elephants
Carnivores: Animals who eat other animals are called
carnivores. Eg: tigers, snakes, dolphins
Omnivores: Animals that eat both plants and animals are
called omnivores. Eg: dogs, wolves

Based on their body temperature, animals are classified as:

Warm-blooded: Animals who can make their own body heat
even when it is cold outside. They can maintain their body
temperature. Eg: humans, birds
Cold-blooded: Animals whose body temperature changes
according to the temperature of the environment are cold-
blooded animals. Eg: fish, insects

Food Chain

Every living being - be it an animal or plant, needs energy in

order to live. Each time an animal runs or jumps, or human
beings walk or talk, it requires energy.

Where do we get energy from?

All living beings get energy from the food they eat. Plants make
their food using sunlight, water, and nutrients. Animals eat food
from plants or other animals and get energy.

So, then what is the food chain?

A food chain shows how each living being gets its food, and how
the energy is passed from one living being to another. The Food
chain starts with plants, and since they produce their food, they
are called 'producers'. Animals that eat plants or other animals,
are called 'consumers'. A food chain may have several
consumers, but it always starts with a producer, which is a plant
form. Human beings are consumers.

Corn is eaten by the

mouse, who is eaten by
the owl. Since there are 3
beings in this chain, it is
called a 3-linked food
chain.

The rabbit eats the carrot,

the fox eats the rabbit, and
the lion eats the fox. Energy
from the carrot is passed
from rabbit to the fox and
lastly to the lion.

Maize is eaten by the fly,

who is eaten by the frog,
the snake eats the frog,
and the eagle eats the
snake. Maize is the
producer, and the fly,
frog, snake and eagle are
consumers.

5. HUMAN BODY
The Human Body is the most complex machine in the world.
There are the parts that we can see called external parts of the
body. The other parts (called internal organs) are inside the
body, and cannot be seen. Our organs are held in place by the
skin, bones, and muscles. The internal organs are connected
through nerves and blood vessels. The red liquid that runs in our
body is called blood, which helps supply oxygen and other
nutrients to various parts of our body.

What are the different parts of our body?

HEAD -
Our head has hair, ears, and
our face. The face with eyes,
nose, mouth with teeth. The
neck connects our head to
our body.
HANDS AND FINGERS -
We have 2 arms. Each arm
has one hand. Each hand
has 5 fingers. The hands help
us write, draw, eat, clap, play.

BODY -
Our body has all the
important organs so that
our body functions properly.

LEGS, FEET AND TOES -

We have 2 legs. Each leg has
a foot with 5 toes each. We
walk, stand, jump, run, dance,
play, and cycle with our legs.

20
GK FOR KIDS - SUB-JUNIOR

How do we know what is happening around us?

Humans have 5 senses - sight, smell, taste, hearing, and touch.
We have 5 sensory organs that help with these senses.

EYES - We have 2 eyes that help us see. With our eyes,

we see colours, shapes, and sizes.

NOSE - We all have one nose with 2 nostrils which help us

smell. We can smell good or bad smells. We also breathe
with our noses.

TONGUE - Our tongue is inside our mouth. The tongue

helps us taste. We can taste sweet, salty, bitter, sour,
and spicy foods with our tongues.

EARS - We all have 2 ears, which help us hear sound. We

can hear songs, speeches, and people talking, and the
noise that is heard can be soft or loud.

SKIN - Our skin covers our whole body. We feel with our
skin, whether something is hot or cold, soft or hard, or
blunt or sharp.

What else makes up our body?

Different organs inside our bodies are connected. The organs
are protected by many bones, which give our body shape. All
these organs are made up of very small cells. A cell is the
basic unit of life, and is called the building blocks of life.

TEETH ARE A TYPE OF

BLOOD - MADE OF THERE ARE 206 BONE. ADULTS HAVE 32
SMALL CELLS BONES IN THE BODY TEETH

21
GK FOR KIDS - SUB-JUNIOR

Some important (internal) organs in our body

BRAIN - PROTECTED LUNGS - RIGHT LUNG HEART - HAS 4

BY SKULL IS LARGER THAN LEFT CHAMBERS

LIVER - LARGEST STOMACH - WHERE INTESTINE- WHERE

INTERNAL ORGAN FOOD IS BROKEN DOWN FOOD IS DIGESTED

How do we feel pain?

Every part of our body has nerves, which pass information
from a sensory organ to the brain. Our brain analyses the
information and sends instructions to different parts of the
body through nerves. Nerves connect sensory organs with
different parts of the body to the brain.

Why do we not feel any pain when we cut our hair or nails?
Hair and nails are made up of dead cells, and they do not
have any nerves attached to them. It is only at the base of
the hair (the part attached to the skull) or the base of the nail
(where the nail emerges from the skin) that there is living
tissue that has nerves.

22
GK FOR KIDS - SUB-JUNIOR

How can we take care of our body?

Our body needs care. Eating a balanced diet, exercising, and

ensuring personal cleanliness and clean surroundings are
some ways to make sure that the body, mind, and soul are all in
balance.

Eating a balanced diet is important.

The food that we eat contains different and varying types of
nutrients. The nutrients essential for our body are
carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals, and proteins. Each
nutrient is required by our body for the proper functioning of our
organs. In addition to giving us energy, they also help in building
and repairing body tissues, increasing the absorption of
vitamins, and giving proper structure to blood vessels, and
bones. Different food items provide us with various nutrients.

What do humans beings need?

All human beings have a few basic needs - food, water, air,
shelter, and clothing. These are all important for us to live.

Food: We need food to live. Food gives us the energy to play,

work, study, and for all activities. Food helps our body grow,
and it keeps us healthy and strong. We get food from plants
and also from animals.

We get food from plants (fruits, vegetables, pulses, grains,

spices, etc) and animals (eggs, meat, milk, butter, etc).

23
GK FOR KIDS - SUB-JUNIOR

Food Sources from Plants

We eat plants or parts of plants as food and get energy. Some
plant sources of food can be eaten raw (such as fruits) and
others require to be cooked (cereals, pulses, and vegetables).
The plant sources of food are:
Cereals such as wheat, rice, jowar, bajra, maize, and millet.
Pulses such as moong dal, gram.
Fruits such as bananas, oranges, grapes, apples, mangoes.
Vegetables such as spinach, potato, onion, gourd.

Food Sources from Animals

Animals also provide food for us. The various types of animal -
based food are milk, eggs, butter, cheese, yogurt.

Water: Water is the most important natural resource and is

very precious for humans, animals and plants. We need water
to live. Water is tasteless and transparent. We use water for
drinking, cooking, cleaning, bathing, washing clothes, watering
plants. The chemical formula of water is H2O. It is made up of 2
atoms of Hydrogen and 1 atom of Oxygen.

Air: Humans breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon

dioxide. Oxygen is found in the air which is all around us.

24
GK FOR KIDS - SUB-JUNIOR

Shelter: Human beings need shelter for protection against

wind, rain, cold, heat, natural calamities, and wild animals.
This is why we live in houses.

Clothing: Clothing is a basic human need. We cover our bodies

with clothes and it protects us from cold, heat, rain, dust, etc.

What is junk food?

Any food that is high in calorie intake and has little to no
nutritional value, has high sugar or salt content, is considered
junk food. Pre-cooked and packaged foods are also junk food
since they have high salt content. (Salt is a preservative, and
is added to make sure that food does not spoil).
Eg: Potato chips, burgers, french fries, ice cream.

Why is junk food bad for us?

Junk food does not contain any nutrients, and hence does not
help the body to grow, or perform any regular functions, nor
does it help any of the internal organs. Junk foods are high in
calories and hence regular eating can make anyone put on a
great deal of weight.

Why are junk foods so popular, if they are not good for us?
Junk food tastes very good as it has a lot of sugar or salt, and
eating it makes us feel very sleepy and lazy. Eating junk food
in moderation is acceptable, however, regular eating can
harm our bodies and our organs over some time, and is
therefore very unhealthy for us.

25
GK FOR KIDS - SUB-JUNIOR

Have you heard of pollution? Let's see what that is all about.

Pollution
Pollution is the release of harmful substances into the
environment. These substances, (called pollutants) can be in
the form of gas or liquid, they can be natural (volcanic ash) or
manmade (chemicals from factories). Pollutants damage the
quality of air, water, and land, making them harmful to humans,
animals, and plants.

There are several types of pollution. Let's see what the most
important of these are:
Air Pollution: The release of pollutants into the air decreases
the quality of the air we breathe, which in turn affects the
human body. Smog is a type of air pollution that occurs
when pollutants from burning coal react with fog. Soot is
another type of air pollutant.
Water Pollution: The release of pollutants into water, makes
it unsafe for human use and animal life that inhabit water
bodies. Toxic factory waste and petroleum are some such
examples of water pollutants.
Land Pollution: Waste materials get deposited on the soil.
Also the chemicals from pesticides and fertilizers harm
plants, animals, and people.

INDIA & G20

India is part of G20 (Group of 20) - an intergovernmental forum

founded in 1999, for countries to address issues related to the
economy. 19 countries and the European Union are members of
G20.

This year, India holds the Presidency of G20 from December 1,

2022, to November 30, 2023. The Presidency is supported by a
'troika', made up of immediate past and next host countries.
The present troika is Indonesia, India, and Brazil.

There are various types of high-level meetings, working groups,

task forces, and discussions that are held by G20 member
countries. The G20 has two main tracks of discussion:
The Sherpa Track - to discuss non-economic issues (eg:
development)
The Finance Track - to discuss the economy and financial
issues.

The G20 does not have any headquarters, and each of the
countries hosts the G20 Summit when it is their turn.

The G20 logo has colours inspired by the Indian national flag.
There is a lotus - India's national flower, and Earth. Below the
logo is written 'Bharat' in Devanagari script. The theme is,
“Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” or “One Earth, One Family, One
