“Was that Doctor Jefferson?” Amy Youngblood asked when her son
Emmet returned to the cabin.
“Yellow Sky passed away tonight,” Emmet said.
Amy sighed heavily. “I’m sorry to hear that,” she said.
“I’ll take a ride over and see Two Hawks in the morning,” Emmet
said.
“I will go with you,” Amy said.
“That’s not necessary, Mother,” Emmet said.
“I will go with you,” Amy said.
Emmet nodded. There was no use arguing with his mother; he’d
never won an argument yet. “Okay, Mother,” he said.
“There’s coffee left in the pot,” Amy said.
Emmet filled a cup and took it and his pipe out to the porch.
Amy went to the sink and cranked the pump to fill the basin with
water to soak the dinner dishes.
She was close to sixty years old now, but still maintained the
beauty of her youth, the beauty that attracted her husband to her so
many years ago, even if her dark hair was sprinkled with gray. Her
mother was a mixture of Irish and Sioux; her father was Mexican
Apache and French. The combination bloodlines produced a woman
of exquisite beauty.
Her childhood was turmoil. Her father was killed in the Comanche
Wars in 1836 when she was still a child. Her mother, as a mixed
breed, was an outcast in most Texas towns and was forced to take
in laundry to put food on the table. Her mother also insisted that
Amy receive a proper education. By the time she was eighteen, Amy
spoke English, French, Spanish, Sioux, and Apache. In her
eighteenth year, Amy also met a handsome, young United States
marshal named John Youngblood.
They courted for two years before marrying because he was away
from Austin so much, but finally they married and settled down.
Their first son was named John after his father. The second was
named Emmet. When John was just five and Emmet all of two, her
husband took an appointment of marshal in Fort Smith in Arkansas.
Her husband was killed just before the war started by outlaws he
was tracking in the Ozark Mountains.
Left with two small sons to rear, Amy applied for a position of
schoolteacher and was granted a license. The war years were hard,
difficult times, but the family survived, and her sons grew to men.
John was appointed a deputy US marshal by Judge Isaac Parker
when John was just twenty-five years old. Emmet was appointed a
deputy on the reservation by Judge Parker a few years later because
of his Native American blood and law degree.
Her sons, once as close as brothers could be, now hardly spoke at
all. Amy took some blame for that, having seen the feud brewing
long before it came to a head, and she kept silent about it, figuring
incorrectly that brotherly love for each other would prevail. She
didn’t count on the love for a woman breaking such a bond.
A year after his appointment as a deputy marshal, Jack, as he
was called then, met a young woman whose family recently settled
in Fort Smith. Her name was Sarah, and she was a fine doll of a
woman, with black hair and chiseled features. Jack immediately was
smitten with her and asked her to marry him.
Emmet was away at school in Boston at the time. He returned
home while Jack was away on assignment and upon Sarah and
Emmet meeting, the two fell deeply in love at first sight. When Jack
returned, he didn’t take kindly to the news that the woman he
wanted to marry had fallen in love with his kid brother.
Jack was a giant of a man, standing six-foot-three in his stocking
feet, and came close to beating Emmet to death, and would have,
had not Amy clubbed him on the back of his head with a bottle. The
wound required seven stitches to close. When it healed, the hair
never grew back, and the injury left a small, crescent-moon scar.
After Emmet and Sarah married, Jack avoided seeing his brother
for years and would only see Amy if she came to town. Amy, a
devote Christian, prayed every Sunday in church that her sons would
one day reunite and be brothers again.
teille seuraa.»
Herra Blood heräsi mietteistään. Hän oli tuuminut, että hänellä oli
kojelaatikossaan pitkä leikkaus veitsi, jolla saattaisi suorittaa
kapteeni Hobartiin nähden erittäin hyväätekevän leikkauksen.
Hyväätekevän nimittäin ihmiskunnalle. Joka tapauksessa sairasti
rakuuna liikaverevyyttä, joten pieni suoneniskentä olisi ollut hänelle
sangen sopiva. Vaikeus oli vain tilaisuuden saannissa. Hän oli
alkanut ajatella, eikö kapteenia olisi voinut saada viekoitelluksi

YLITUOMARI
Vasta kaksi kuukautta myöhemmin, yhdeksäntenätoista päivänä
syyskuuta — Peter Blood joutui oikeuteen valtiopetoksesta
kapinan johtajat? Luulen, että Greyn juttu selittää täydelleen heidän
poissaolonsa. He ovat varakkaita ihmisiä ja voivat ostaa, itsensä
vapaiksi.
enää on puolustelemisesta apua.»
