Pandas
Pandas are bears that are native to China, where they are also known as a national treasure. Pandas
are endangered animals as there are fewer than 1900 pandas living in the world. About 300 pandas
live in the zoo so that they can be protected from their predators such as snow leopards and jackals,
which are capable of killing and eating panda cubs.
However, the biggest cause of pandas being endangered is not their enemies in the wild, but every
day human actions such as illegal hunting and cutting down the trees.
Pandas can grow up to 1.5 m tall and weigh as much as 150 kg. Most of the remaining wild pandas
live in the Minshan and Qinling Mountains. These mountains have pandas’ favourite food –
bamboo. Other than that, pandas sometimes eat birds or rodents as well.
In general, pandas are peaceful animals. They may look harmless, but they have strong arms and
powerful jaws and teeth. Besides, they are also skilled tree-climbers and good swimmers.
