Emg 1205 Computer Aided Drawing Final Exam-1[1] (1)
Instructions:
1. Attempt 3 Questions
Question 1
The Figure Q1 below shows 2 - dimensional shaft assembly to be used in training of precision
machining processes. Figure Q1A show the sectioned front view of the assembly and figure
Q1B and Q1C presents the details of each part.
1. Reproduce the front View of part A, the Top view, Front View and Side View of part
B in 2-dimensional format. Include at least 6 dimensions in each drawing and print your
drawing on A4 paper. [20 marks]
2. Assemble Part A and part B and reproduce the sectioned view along the axis A-A as
shown in Fig Q1A. [20 marks]
Question 2
Figure Q2 shows an electrical circuit system. Reproduce the same with all given dimensions
and print your drawing on an A4 paper complete with a title block. [15 Marks]
Question 3
a) Discuss the general architecture of CAD systems and explain at least three major parts
(10 marks)
b) Describe four advantages of Computer Aided Drawing (CAD) over traditional drawing
methods [5 marks]
Question 4
The machine part in Figure Q4 represents a flange of a heat exchange system. The is scheduled
for production in the workshop but before it is accepted for production, the production manager
requests for the following.
a) Reproduce the front View, the Top view and Side View of the flange. Include at least
6 dimensions in each drawing and print your drawing on A4 paper. [15 marks]

QUESTION 5
a) Briefly describe surface and solid modelling techniques clearly citing the merits and
demerits of each as used in object modelling. [8 marks]
b) Figure Q5 shows a generatrix profile of a wine glass. Using AutoCAD create a 3-D
surface model of the wine glass from the generatrix. [7 marks]

Fast and Productive-unlike traditional engineering drawing, its fast to produce
drawings on a CAD platform. for example, to produce 6 circles radially spaced from
each other, on a CAD platform one just need to draw one circle and then use the object
Array command to distribute the circles at 60 degrees from each other, a process that
takes less than a minute.
Accuracy- unlike traditional engineering drawing, Computer Aided Drawing/Design
(CAD) applications such as AutoCAD and Inventor offers high level of dimensional
accuracy and high drawing precision. With just a click of the mouse, its possible to
change a drawing precision from one decimal (0.0) to say 5 decimal places (0.00000).
Visualization-CAD platform with ability for three dimensional modeling, breaks the
barrier imposed by the paper 2-D platform by offering object visualization on all three
dimesions (x,y,z). orthographic projection of the drawing in 2-D offers increased levels
of object vizualization but does not much 3-D visualization

possible to carry out realtime analysis on the
drawing/model and make changes. This is not possible with traditional engineering
drawing. With 3-D models, its possible to carry out mechanical analysis such as finite
element analysis on the drawing model. This is not possible with traditional drawing
Question 4
Question 5
(a)
Surface Modeling
Surface models define the surface features as well as edges of the object. Parametric
techniques are used to precisely describe the curvature of the surface in all three dimensions.
Several surface patches e.g. a Bezier bicubic patch are put together during surface modeling
to form the complete surface of the object being modeled. [2 marks]
Advantage
Surface models are invaluable in aircraft, motor vehicles design and ship building industries

due to their precise mathematically defined
performance of the surfaces e.g. an aircraft wing span against drag. [1 mark]
Disadvantages
Surface models are incapable of handling topology. It is impossible to drill through a surface
model since one passes through an infinitely thin surface. [1 mark]
Solid Modeling
Solid modeling represents the highest level of object modeling. Unlike wireframe and surface
models, solid models, includes volumetric information, that is, what is on the inside of the 3-
D model as well as the information about the surface and the edges of theobject. A 3-D solid
model has its surface as a representation of the boundary between the inside and the outside
of the object. Some examples of solid modeling are: primitive modeling and Constructive
Solid Geometry (CSG) modeling. [2 marks]
Advantage
Since the model has volumetric information, it’s possible with a solid model to carry out
several operations such as Boolean and carry out a host of analysis on the model such as finite
element analysis. [1 mark]
Disadvantages
Unlike the wireframe and surface modeling, solid modeling is more involving and time
consuming. It also requires more computing capacity and special skills. [1 mark]
