QUESTION ONE (Twenty marks)

Determine:

i)The magnitude of force E such that the component in the x direction of the resultant of all
the five forces is 11000 N. (4 marks)

ii) The resultant of all the five forces in a)i above(3 marks)

b) A crane is modeled as shown in figQn1(b). Replace the loading with a single force and a couple
at A such that the effect is the same as the system of forces indicated. (3 marks)

QUESTION TWO (Twenty marks)
A truss is loaded as shown in figQ(2). All the links are of equal length of 2 m and are of negligible
mass.
a) Using the method of joints, determine the loads in the members connecting joints A,B and G,
indicating if the load is tensile or compressive (16 marks)
b) using the method of sections, determine the load on member CE, indicating if the load is tensile
or compressive (4 marks)

QUESTION THREE (Twenty marks)

(a) A rectangular plate with uniform thickness has the dimensions shown in figQ3(a). From
first principles, and with the aid of appropriate sketches, determine the location of the
centroid. (5 marks)

(a) State the two theorems of Pappus Gulinus on surfaces and bodies of revolution. (3 marks)
(b) The shape in figQ4(b) is rotated about the x-x axis as shown.
Determine:
(i) The location of the centroid from the x-x axis (4 marks)
(ii) The surface area of the resulting surface of rotation (3 marks)
(iii) The volume of the resulting body of rotation (3 marks)
