And now, YOUNG PEOPLE seeking cover run into the shelter, wearing gas masks. ALICE removes her mask, and seems to stand
somewhere out of time. Holding tightly to her book, she looks upon this ghostly world.

(A siren sounds. As music underscores, everyone removes their gas mask and ducks beneath their cot – everyone except
ALICE, who sits immersed in her book.
Then, with a synchronized gesture, all the youths lift one side of their cot and set it on the platform with a bang, bringing us
back into the present. [BEGIN FADE OUT] We realize that these youths have settled into a makeshift home, a ward of the
ailing and wounded, encamped in this Station. The fey but weary DODGY turns to the posh young CLARISSA.)

DODGY: RED CROSS NURSE:

Darling, I’ve forgotten – is it day or night? Catch that cough, he’ll be your death.
CLARISSA: Ward D.
You pick. (Aside to DR. BUTRIDGE)
The good-as-dead.
(On her round of passing out grey war blankets, the RED
CROSS NURSE trundles through. She passes the anxious, DR. BUTRIDGE: (Hard of hearing)
newly orphaned DODGY) Whaaaat?

RED CROSS NURSE: RED CROSS NURSE:

Chilly night tonight. Good-as-dead.
ALICE:
NIGEL: (Quietly, to himself) What are you talking about? He’s not dying.
My Mummy’s coming for me today.
My Mummy’s coming for me today… RED CROSS NURSE:
None found.
(We see the street-tough TABATHA, perched high on a ladder)
ALICE:
TABATHA: (Not buying it) He has me. He’ll get better near me.
Oh do you think? Please. Don’t move him. He’s my dearest friend.
Just like mine and yours, and his and hers. RED CROSS NURSE:

RED CROSS NURSE: (cont’d)
DR. BUTRIDGE: Back! To! Your! Bed!
They found him in the gutter, buried in the rubble.
Whole block went down. And button up that blousey, Mousey.

(ALICE reaches for the quarantine curtain, but the RED CROSS ALICE: (Heads to her cot)
NURSE stops her) But it is – all buttoned. It’s just grown smaller, really.

RED CROSS NURSE: TABATHA: (With a knowing, survivor’s grin)

Alice! Back to your bed. Funny how that happens, when the boys start growing
bigger.
DR. BUTRIDGE:
Superventrical Tachycardia, with Hypovolemia– CLARISSA: (Suddenly panicked)
Oh my God – my pearls! Where are my pearls?
ALICE:
What does that mean? DODGY: (Withdrawing the strand from his neck)
They insisted.
DR. BUTRIDGE:
Hyperhydrosis – (DODGY begrudgingly hands CLARISSA the pearls. As NIGEL
rocks, ALICE looks again toward ALFRED)
ALICE:
That means he’ll be all right? NIGEL:
Right? My Mummy’s coming for me today.
My Mummy’s coming for me today.
DR. BUTRIDGE: My Mummy’s coming for me today…

ANGUS: TABATHA:
You’ve passed, Harold. It’s past. Oh that’s funny, is it?
