DIVISION TRAINING ON MANIPULATION OF SCIENCE LABORATORY APPARATUS,

MATERIALS, EQUIPMENT AND ENSURING SAFETY IN LABORATORY

ACTIVITY NO. _____

CHANGES IN MATERIALS
Objectives:
1. To demonstrates understanding of the effects of temperature on materials
Materials Needed:

10g gelatine powder, (60ml )hot water, beaker, spatula, alcohol lamp, petri plates, plastic
spoons, graduated cylinder, tripod, wire gauze, triple beam balance

Procedure:
1. Weigh 10g of gelatine powder set aside
2. Measure 60 ml of water using the graduated cylinder
3. Set up the heating instrument, tripod, wire gauze and alcohol lamp (lighted)
4. Heat the water and when heated enough mix the gelatine powder and continue to stir it
till completely dissolve and set as solid.
Grade 3

SCIENCE JOURNAL

1. Pupils will explore how the addition or removal of heat energy can change matter
from state to state.
2. Let them investigate how gelatine begins as a powder (solid) and when hot water is
added, it dissolves (liquid). Then, when it is cooled, it turns back into a solid.
Likewise, when Jelly is a solid, it can be turned back into a liquid by adding hot
water.
3. Discuss with the pupils how matter can change when heat is added or taken away.

SIMPLE FILTRATION

Objective: To set up a simple filtration system and understand its process

Materials:
(2) filter paper no. 2, (2) funnel, water, (2) 100 ml beaker, (2) 250 ml Erlenmeyer Flask,
Mud, Flour, (2) stirring rod, (2) graduated cylinder
Procedure:
1. Measure a 25 ml of water using the graduated cylinder (lower meniscus). Pour out
25 ml of water in a 100 ml beaker, stir in a small amount of mud.
2. Follow procedure 1 but this time stir in small amount of flour.
3. Fold the -filter paper 1 for mud and 1 for flour (for filtration).
4. Place separately the 2 folded filter paper in the 2 funnels. Make sure the funnel are
on the top of the Erlenmeyer flask.
5. Pour out the 2 water mixtures separately into 1 of the filtrations set up.
6. Wait for the filtrate.

EVAPORATION

Objective: To determine how temperature influences the evaporation of 3 different liquids

Materials: Tripod, alcohol lamp, evaporating dish, milk, water and oil, wire gauze,
Pipette or dropper
Procedure:
1. Set up a tripod. Make sure the wire gauze is on top of the tripod and the alcohol lamp
is lighted.
2. Place 5 ml of water in the evaporating dish. Heat it over the alcohol lamp.
3. Observe it with time. Record it in your science journal.
4. Follow the step 2 for milk and oil.
5. Write all your observations in your science journal
