Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary

The Madhya Pradesh government has completed preparations for its ambitious Cheetah
reintroduction project in Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary. It is the second home for
leopards in India after Kuno National Park.

Leopard Project
▪ Phase-I of the project to restore the population of endangered Cheetah in the country in 1952 began in 2022.
▪ This includes the relocation of Cheetah from South Africa and Namibia to Kuno National Park.
▪ The project has been implemented by NTCA in collaboration with Madhya Pradesh Forest Department, and Wildlife
Institute of India (WII).
▪ India is considering sourcing Cheetah from Kenya under Phase-II of the project due to similar habitats.
▪ The Cheetah will be shifted to Kuno National Park and Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary (Madhya Pradesh).

About Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary

Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary is a wildlife sanctuary located on the northern border of Mandsaur and Nimuch districts
of Madhya Pradesh, India.
It is spread over an area of 368.62 km2 (142.32 sq mi) adjacent to the state of Rajasthan in India.
It was notified in 1974 and a large area was added in 1983.
The Chambal river passes through dividing the sanctuary into two parts.
The western part is in Nimuch district and the eastern part is in Mandsaur district.
It is located in the eco-region of Khathiar-Gir dry deciduous forests.

Kuno National Park

▪ It is located in Madhya Pradesh.
▪ It was initially established as a wildlife sanctuary in 1981.
▪ It was later designated as a national park in 2018.
▪ It is located in the dry deciduous forests of Khathiyar-Gir.

International Yoga Day 2024

Context:- International Yoga Day is celebrated on June 21, a global event dedicated to the practice and benefits of
yoga. The day emphasizes the importance of yoga in promoting physical, mental and spiritual well-being.
The 10th International Day of Yoga has the theme "Yoga for Self and Society".
This year's theme highlights the transformative nature of yoga, which goes beyond individual well-being and
extends its benefits to society as a whole.

112th International Labour Conference

Context:- The 112th International Labour Organization (ILC) was held in
Geneva from 3-14 June 2024 in which more than 4,900 delegates
participated - representing governments and employers and workers. The 113th
ILC will be held in June 2025.

June 2024. Workers, employers and government representatives from the 187 member countries of the
ILO tackle a wide range of issues.

International Labour Organization

The International Labour Organization (ILO) is a United Nations agency whose mandate is to advance social and
economic justice by setting international labor standards.
It was founded in October 1919 under the League of Nations, one of the first and oldest specialized
organizations of the UN.
The ILO has 187 member states
It is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.
It has about 40 field offices around the world and employs approximately 3,381 staff in 107 countries, of whom
1,698 work on technical cooperation programs and projects.

UN Sustainable Development Report 2024

Recently, the 9th edition of the Sustainable Development Report released by the UN
Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) highlighted that the world is
significantly lagging behind in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by
the United Nations in 2015.

▪ It is a global network established by the United Nations (UN) in 2012.
▪ It aims to promote practical solutions to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS)
at the national and international level.
▪ It focuses on mobilizing expertise by connecting universities, research institutes and national laboratories to identify
and develop solutions to tackle critical sustainability challenges.
▪ The Secretariat of SDSN is located in Paris, France.

▪ Ranking: India is ranked 109th with an overall score of 64.0.

▪ Status of SDG goals: Only 30% of SDG goals are on track or achieved.
o There is limited progress in the other 40% of the targets and the situation is worsening in about 30%
of the targets.
▪ Average performance of SDGs:- High performance has been observed in achieving SDG 1, SDG 4, SDG
12 and SDG 13.

Greenfield Port at Vadhawan, Maharashtra

The Government of India has approved the construction of a new major port at
Vadhavan in Dahanu taluka of Palghar district of Maharashtra. The Union Cabinet chaired
by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 19 June 2024 approved the project. The
Development Of The New Port Vadhavan Is In Line With The Prime Ministers Gatishakti
Program.

Developer of Wadhawan Port

• The proposed all-weather greenfield Wadhawan port is India's largest deep draft
port. It will be built by Vadhavan Port Project Limited (VPPL).
• VPPL is a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) established by Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and Maharashtra
Maritime Board (MMB).
• JNPA in SPV MMB's stake in SPV is 74 per cent.It is 26 per cent.
• The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority manages the Nhawa Sheva port in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra.
• A deep draft port means that the port can handle large cargo ships.

Cost of Vadhavan Port:- The total cost of the Vadhavan project is Rs 76,220 crore. This includes land acquisition
cost, development of key infrastructure, terminals and other commercial infrastructure. The project will be built on public-
private partnership (PPP).

Importance of Wadhwan Port:- The port being developed on the west coast of India will be a modern port with all
facilities to increase foreign trade. The port is expected to boost foreign trade through the proposed IMEEC (India Middle
East Europe Economic Corridor) and INSTC (International North South Transport Corridor).

• The Wadhawan port, India' s largest deep draft port, will be built at Wadhawan in Palghar district of
Maharashtra.
• The Maharashtra Maritime Board will build the Wadhawan port in Maharashtra in a joint venture with the

NFIES Scheme for Forensic Infra

Context:- The Government of India has approved a new Central Sector Scheme to strengthen the criminal forensic
infrastructure in the country to help an efficient criminal justice system. The Union Cabinet approved the National
Forensic Infrastructure Augmentation Scheme (NFIES) at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 19
June 2024.

"Feature of National Forensic Infrastructure Augmentation Project

➢ "The National Forensic Infrastructure Augmentation Scheme (NFIES) will be implemented by the Union Home
Ministry.

"The National Forensic Infrastructure Augmentation Scheme (NFIES) will consist of three components:
• Construction of National University of Legal Sciences (NFSU) campuses in the country.
• Establishment of Central Forensic Science Laboratories across the country.
• Strengthening the existing infrastructure of NFSU's Delhi campus.

Financial Expenses for NFIES:- The Central Government has sanctioned Rs.2254.43 crore for the National
Forensic Infrastructure Development Project . The funding for the project comes from the budget allocation to the
Union Home Ministry.

NFIES Period:- The duration of the National Forensic Infrastructure Augmentation Project is five years, i.e. from 2024-
25 to 2028-29.

National University of Legal Sciences (NFSU)

➢ National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) is the world's first and only forensic university in the world.
➢ It has been established to train professionals in forensic science and meet the demand of the country.
➢ NFSU was established as the Gujarat Forensic Sciences University in 2009 by the then Chief Minister of Gujarat,
Narendra Modi.
➢ In 2020, the National Forensic Science University Act changed its name to its current name and made it a national
university and an institution of national importance.
➢ NFSU is under the Union Home Ministry.
➢ Main Campus: Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
What is forensic science?
• The word forensics comes from the Latin word forensis, which means public debate or debate.
• In modern terms, forensic science is the use of natural and physical science methods in matters of civil and
criminal law.
Forensic scientists use scientific techniques to examine and interpret evidence in relation to civil and criminal
processes.

2024 Copa America football tournament

The 48th edition of the Copa America football tournament will begin in the United States on
21 June 2024. This is the second time in the 108-year history of the Copa America Cup that
an event has been hosted outside South America. In 2016, the United States hosted the Copa
America Cup.
➢ Defending champions Argentina will take on debutant Canada in the opening match at the Mercedes-Benz
Stadium in Atlanta on June 21, 2024.

➢ The United States will host the tournament in fourteen cities from 21 June to 15 July 2024.

2024 Copa America teams and groups

➢ In the 2024 Copa America, 16 football teams from the United States (North America and South America)
are participating. Ten teams are conmebol members, and six are concacaf teams.
➢ CONMEBOL, or South American Football Federation, is the governing body of football on the South American
continent.
➢ CONCACAF, or Confederation of North, Central America and the Caribbean Association, is the governing body of
football in North America, Central America and the Caribbean Islands.
These teams are divided into 4 groups
• Group A : Argentina, Peru, Chile, Canada

About the Copa America

The Copa America is a continental-level men's football tournament, usually attended by countries

Initially, only South American countries were allowed to participate in the Copa America Cup.

Global Energy Conversion Index 2024
According to the Global Energy Transformation Index released by the World
Economic Forum (WEF) on 19 June 2024, India ranks 63rd out of 120 countries
surveyed on the index. Last year, India was ranked 67th, an improvement of three
ranks.
• Like last year, Sweden is again at the top of the index.
• According to the WEF, India has shown significant improvement across energy equity, security and
sustainability.

Who prepares the Global Energy Transition Index?

• The Global Energy Conversion Index has been published by the WEF in its annual report 'Fastering
Effective Energy Transition' . The annual report has been published by WEF in collaboration with
Accenture.

2024 Global Energy Transformation Index

➢ European countries dominate the top tier of the 2024 Global Energy Transformation Index. Sweden topped the index,
followed by Denmark, Finland, Switzerland and France.

➢ India is ranked 63rd, while China is ranked 20th.

➢ According to the WEF, 107 of the 120 countries have demonstrated progress in their energy transformation journey over the
past decade. However, the pace of energy transition has slowed down due to economic volatility, increased
geopolitical tensions and technological shifts.

➢ India and China, which account for roughly one-third of the global population, play a crucial role in the global energy transition,
the WEF report says.

Indian Army inducts indigenous ASMI submachine gun.

The Northern Command of the Indian Army has ordered 550 indigenously designed, developed
and manufactured ASMI submachine guns worth Rs 4.26 crore. It is the first locally designed
and manufactured weapon to be inducted into the Indian Army.
➢ The ASMI submachine gun is manufactured by Hyderabad-based Lokesh Machine Limited.

➢ ASMI is the name of the indigenously designed and manufactured submachine gun that was
recently inducted into the Indian Army .

➢ The indigenously developed ASMI submachine gun has been designed by the Armament Research &
Development Establishment (ARDE), DRDO, Pune.
