Chapter 2 – Operation

Each disinfection cycle can clean 2 probes (1 in each chamber) at a time. If using Metricide or Cidex OPA,
the disinfection cycle lasts 13 minutes. The probes are submerged in HLD for 5 minutes and rinsed 3 times.
If using Resert, the disinfection cycle lasts 16 minutes. The probes are submerged in HLD for 8 minutes
and the probes are rinsed 3 times.

Please reference the liquid flow charts on the following pages to identify how these devices operate. Note
where each solenoid valve is located in respect to the quad valve and dual valve images below.

The first chart is for HLD–IN (Disinfection Process). This is the beginning of the disinfection cycle. SV1
opens, the P-HLD pump turns on and pumps the HLD out of the bottle. SV3 opens to fill the disinfection
chamber. Once the level of HLD in the disinfection chamber reaches the LS-HLD float switch, P-HLD will
turn off and both SV3 and SV1 will close.

To disinfect the probes, the HLD will remain in the disinfection chamber for around 5 minutes for
Metricide or Cidex OPA and 8 minutes for Resert.

SOP 19.04.02, Revision 8 Property of CIVCO Medical Solutions Page 15 of 131
The second chart is for HLD-OUT (Disinfectant Return Process). SV4 opens to allow the HLD to drain out
of the disinfection chamber. P-HLD turns on to pump the HLD back into the bottle. SV2 opens to allow the
HLD to return to the bottle. Once LS-DRN (lower float switch) detects that there is not any HLD in the
disinfection chamber, P-HLD will turn off and both SV4 and SV2 will close.

The HLD-IN (Disinfection Process) and HLD-OUT (Disinfectant Return Process) only occur one time during
each disinfection cycle.

SOP 19.04.02, Revision 8 Property of CIVCO Medical Solutions Page 16 of 131
The third chart is for WATER-IN (Rinse Process). SV8 opens to allow water to flow through the water filter,
then SV6 opens to allow water to fill the disinfection chamber. Once the level of water reaches LS-HLD,
SV6 and SV8 will close.

The WATER-IN (Rinse Process) and WATER-OUT (Rinse Drain Process) occurs 3 times.

SOP 19.04.02, Revision 8 Property of CIVCO Medical Solutions Page 17 of 131
The fourth chart is for WATER-OUT (Rinse Drain Process). SV5 opens and P-DRAIN turns on to send the
water out of the disinfection chamber into the drain pipe and out of the ASTRA unit. Once LS-DRN detects
that there is not any water in the disinfection chamber, P-DRAIN will turn off and SV5 will close.

As noted in the previous diagram, the WATER-IN (Rinse Process) and WATER-OUT (Rinse Drain Process)
occurs 3 times

Company Proprietary/ Return to Table of Contents

SOP 19.04.02, Revision 8 Property of CIVCO Medical Solutions Page 18 of 131
The fifth chart is for WILD (WILD Process). See the below steps for the full outline of the WILD cycle.

• The chambers fill with HLD using the HLD-IN (Disinfection Process) diagram, the user tests the HLD
using MRC strips, and drains out the HLD using the HLD-OUT (Disinfectant Return Process)
diagram.
• The chamber fills with HLD using the HLD-IN (Disinfection Process) diagram for a fixed time, then
fills with water using the WATER-IN (Rinse process) diagram to dilute the HLD and drains the
HLD/water mix using the WATER-OUT (Rinse Drain Process) diagram.
• The chamber fills with HLD using the WILD (WILD Process) diagram. SV1 opens, the P-HLD pump
turns on and pumps the HLD out of the bottle. SV7 and SV6 open to fill the disinfection chamber
through the water filter. Once the level of HLD in the disinfection chamber reaches the LS-HLD
float switch, P-HLD will turn off and both SV6, SV7, and SV1 will close for 12 minutes. The machine
drains the HLD/water filter mix using the HLD-OUT (Disinfectant Return Process) diagram.
• The chamber fills with water using the WATER-IN (Rinse process) diagram, holds for 1 minute, and
drains using the WATER-OUT (Rinse Drain Process) diagram. This step is repeated two more times.

3. Debug Mode

Debug mode is used for troubleshooting purposes only. You should NEVER leave a customer site with the
unit in Debug mode. This could result in major patient safety issues.

When the ASTRA unit is in Debug mode, the machine runs 2-minute cycles (instead of the standard 13-
16-minute cycles) and does not require the bottle to be a certain temperature.

Debug mode is activated by pressing MENU and ENTER keys for 10 seconds. Scroll to "Debug Parameters"
and Press Enter. To run a cycle in Debug mode:

1. At the “Ready for Use” screen, Press ENTER.

2. Scan Probe ID, insert probe mockup into switch, and press ENTER to skip scanning on Operator
ID.
3. Press LEFT arrow key to PASS for the MRC test, you must do this within 5 seconds of displaying.
4. The machine will run a 2-minute cycle of HLD and water.

To get out of Debug Mode Press MENU.

1. Scroll to “Change HLD Type” and Press ENTER.

2. Scroll to the appropriate HLD: <OPA/Resert> New, Press ENTER.
3. The display will read: Change HLD to <OPA/Resert> yes or no? Press YES.
4. Press ENTER to skip scanning an Operator ID.
5. Remove the HLD bottle from the machine.
6. Scan the current HLD bottle.
7. Put that same bottle back into the machine, but DO NOT connect the CPC fittings to the main
bulkhead.
