Hokusai Museum

Those magnificient paintings from 190 years ago were revived in order to
enjoy for us of today with our fun gadgets, Kindle.
Thirty-six views of Mt.Fuji

“Thirty-six views of Mt.Fuji” which is one of the greatest master piece of


Hokusai Katsushika, had been published in 1823-1835, is a very valuable
Ukiyo-e paiting in the history.
It was represented workers in those days and the views of Mt.fuji from all
the places in Japan.
Although these were published with 36 paintings as the title in the first
place, 10 additional paitings were included because of their excellent value.
His unique use of color boldness and the paiting form had a huge influence
on artists not only in Japan but also on all over the world especially on
Vincent van Gogh and Claude Achille Debussy.
Those paitings were definitely innovative works.
However, some of those have scratches and aged stain.
So those old marks were removed with the latest digital technology and all
the 46 paitings had been renovated almost close to the original work in this
book.

painting and symbolize of energetic Japanese soul.
Hokusai Katsushika

Hokusai Katsushika (1760–1849) was a Japanese artist, ukiyo-e painter and


printmaker of the Edo period.
Hokusai is best known as author of the woodblock print series “Thirty-six
Views of Mt.Fuji” which includes the internationally recognized print, “The
Great Wave off Kanagawa”.
Hokusai created the Thirty-Six Views both as a response to domestic belief
in Mt.Fuji and as part of apersonal obsession with Mt.Fuji.
01. The Great Wave off Kanagawa

This is the most famous woodblock print of all-time.


Certainly a masterpiece of Japanese art.
The image depicts Mt.Fuji look down to the brave men fighting the rolling
waters of the sea.
This woodblock print is known for Vincent Van Gogh and Claude Debussy
had great admiration.
02. South Wind, Clear Sky (Red Fuji)

One of the most famous and sought after woodblock prints of all time.
This picture is popularly called as “Red Fuji”.
Mt.Fuji is said to take on a red color in the early morning.
This print, along with the Great Wave are thought to be the best prints of the
series and the masterworks of Hokusai’s career.
03. Rainstorm Beneath the Summit

05. Sundai, Edo

There were samurai residence had stood in a row around there in those
days.
Green of trees are image of summer in Ukiyo-e.
This picture has expressed the trace of Edo that time.
06. The Circular Pine Trees of Aoyama

It is present Shibuya ward to be printed.


“Enza no Matsu” are very big pine trees was planting in Ryugen-Temple in
Sibuya Ward.
The visitors took a walk in the garden and watched these pine trees.

07. Senju, Musashi Province

It is present Tokyo Metropolis Adachi Ward to be printed.

River.

08. Inume pass, Kai province

This woodblock print is the most bold design and important work of
Hokusai.
10. Tama River in Musashi Province

It is present Saitama Prefecture.


A serene morning scene of the Tama River flowing towards Mt.Fuji.

11. Tsukuda Island in Musashi Province

mouth of the Sumida River.

boats, Hokusai creates a gathered composition.
12. Shichiri beach in Sagami Province

Another fantastic Hokusai landscape print depicting the rolling dunes of
Shichiri beach along the Pacific Ocean.

13. Lake Suwa in Shinano Province

14. Kajikazawa in Kai province

This printing is the one of the best of Hokusai’s work.
A famous scene of the fisherman casting his net into the turbulent waters,
Mt.Fuji in the near distance, only the summit seen above the fog.
15. Ushibori in Hitachi Province

It is present Ibaragi Prefecture Itako City to be printed.

16. Umezawa in Sagami Province

17. Mishima pass in Kai province

A big tree divide a flame against Mt.Fuji on the hilly Mishima Pass.

roof at that time.
The watch tower, flying kite, and Mt.Fuji, Hokusai represented hight of sky

19. Ejiri in the Suruga Province

It is present Shizuoka Prefecture Shimizu City to be printed in this


woodblock print.
A sudden gust of wind surprises the travelers on a road that winds through
marshy land.

33. Sazai hall - Temple of Five Hundred Rakan

Gohyaku-Rakan temple was one of the sights of Edo at the time.
But this shrine was moved to Meguro.
They enjoyed viewing Mt.Fuji.
34. Watermill at Onden

It is present Shibuya Ward Harajuku to be printed.

35. Enoshima in Sagami Province

It is present Enoshima Coast in Kanagawa Prefecture Fujisawa City to be

37. Honjo Tatekawa, the timberyard at Honjo

38. Pleasure District at Senju

It is present Tokyo Metropolis Taito Ward Sanya.


The licensed quarters standing a row that was surrounded by a wood wall
seen against the Mt.Fuji.

39. Goten-yama hill, Shinagawa on the Tokaido

This is now Shinagawa Goten-yama hill.


Goten-yama hill was used to be filled with many people enjoying the view
of the ocean and cherry blossoms.
Hiroshige repeatedly drawn of fully cherry blossoms on the other hand,
Hokusai’s only cherry blossom wasstood out beautifully in “Thirtu-six
views of Mt.Fuji”.
Hokusai’s interest is toward people watching flowers and their expressions
rather than those cherry blossoms.
40. Dawn at Isawa in Kai Provinec

It is present Yamanashi Prefecture Fuefuki City to be printed.

Foretelling sunrise, Mt.Fuji stands against a pink sky.
Travelers arranging their packs to continue down the road for the day.
41. The back of Fuji from the Minobu river

Top of Mt.Fuji can be seen between those towerd mountains and deep fog.
Wave, speed, and mass of water is strongly depicted. People travel with
those approaching water.
42. Nakahara in Sagami Province

It is now Hiratsuka city in Kanagawa prefecture.


This is the road for Ohyama which was known with religion as spirit
mountain close to Edo.
Various kinds of people like father and son, trained monks, and traders take
this road for visit.
It is able to be seen the life at the time from ladies going to the farm and
farmers catch clams in the river.
43. Ono Shinden in the Suruga Province

It is now Fuji city in Shizuoka prefecture.


Farmers leading cows with tons of reed, women with full of pickles on their
shoulder, and white herons, all of them are on the way home as the sun is
set.

Oi river was difficult stage of the Tokaido-Road for the travelers.


Depicting travelers crossing the swift current of the Oi River, Hokusai
sketched strong movement in the painting. With exacting detail of the water
pushing against the efforts of the travelers, Hokusai creates a fine
composition.
46. Climbing on Fuji

This is the final piece in this series that was drawn of near the top ot
Mt.fuji.
It is represented of people climbing with sticks, sitting and rest, giving thier
body a minute in the lodge,and people at the top.

of Mt.Fuji” is one of the master piece that vigorously reminds us of Mt. fuji
is a mountain of faith as a theme.
