-the values at the critical numbers the largest of these values is the absolute max value
-the values at the endpoints of the domain and the smallest of these values is the absolute

8. Write a concluding statement to answer the question posed. Do not forget appropriate units!
Examples:
1. A farmer has 2400ft of fencing, and wants to fence off a rectangular field that borders a straight river.
She needs no fencing along the river. What are the dimensions of the field that have the largest area?
What is the area of the field?
2. A farmer is going to enclose a rectangular field of corn whose area will be 60 000m 2. One side of her
fence is parallel to a highway, where expensive fencing is required. The fencing along the highway costs
$40/m while the remaining fencing costs $20/m. What should the dimensions of her field be to make
the total cost a minimum? What is the minimum cost?
3. A box is to be constructed from a sheet of cardboard 10cm wide by 16cm long by cutting out squares
from the corners and folding up the sides. Determine the length of the side of each square that should
be cut out to give a box of maximum volume. What are the dimensions and volume of this box?
4. Determine the point on the parabola y 2 2 x that is closest to the point (1,4)
5. A can is made to hold 1L of oil. Determine the dimensions that will minimize the cost of the metal to
manufacture the can.
6. A man is at a point A on a bank of a straight river that is 3km wide. He wants to reach a point B on the
opposite bank of the river that is 8 km downstream. He has a boat that he can row at a rate of 6 km/h
and he can run at a rate of 8 km/h. Determine how far downstream he should row his boat so that he
can reach point B in the shortest time possible.
