Madame ja mademoiselle
Vilpittömästi puhuen ei minulle vanha haava tehnyt kipeää, vaan

madamen sanat, jotka täydensivät, mitä Clonin äkillinen
ilmestyminen puutarhassa oli aloittanut, ja ne edistivät melkoisesti
paatumistani ja entiselleni pääsemistä. Minä näin katkeruudekseni
— minkä kenties olin hetkiseksi unohtanut — kuinka leveä se juopa
oli, joka erotti minut noista naisista, kuinka mahdotonta oli, että me

Elämä Cocheforêtissa oli ainiaan samansuuntaista kun tuona

päivällishetkenä. Joka päivä, voin melkein sanoa jokainen ateriain
väli, herätti saman aatossarjan. Clon saapuvilla ollessa tai madamen
tietämättään lausuessa jonkun julman sanan muistuttamaan minulle,
mikä juopa oli välillämme, olin kyllä oma itseni. Mutta muutoin huokui
mieleeni kummaa vienoutta tämä rauhallinen ja tuttavallinen elämä,

suuresti erehtynyt, ellei hän tuntenut itseään pettyneeksi ja odottanut

Minä vastasin, kuten sopivaisuus vaati, ja näin hänen menevän

sisälle, ja kaiken aikaa kirosin tehtävääni ja sitä halpamaista kehnoa
uteliaisuutta, jonka se oli minussa herättänyt voimakkaammaksi kuin
ennen. Voi noita naisia, silloin melkein vihasin heitä heidän
suoruutensa vuoksi, heidän mielettömän herkkäuskoisuutensa ja

hyväkseen. Se antoi alhaisen, halveksittavan leiman sille tehtävälle,
jonka olin ottanut suorittaakseni.
Tämä oli joka tapauksessa kovin kummallista! Mitä saattoikaan

herra de Cocheforêt tarkoittaa tulemalla takaisin näin pian, jos hän
todella oli täällä? Ja toiselta puolen, jollei hänen odottamaton
paluunsa ollut taloa mullistanut, niin mikä sitten olikaan
salaisuutena? Kenen jälkiä Clon oli seurannut? Ja mikä oli syynä
madamen levottomuuteen? Pian voitti uteliaisuus minut uudelleen, ja
kun naiset eivät näyttäytyneet illallispöydässä, oli minulla hyvä
tilaisuus antaa aivojeni askarrella, ja tunnin kuluessa ehdin ajatella
monen monituisia ratkaisuja salaisuuteen. Mutta mikään niistä ei
oikein sopinut, mikään ei selittänyt asiaa uskottavasti.
Väärä hälytys tuotti minulle sinä iltana vielä lisää päänvaivaa. Noin
tunnin verran illallisen jälkeen istuin samalla penkillä puutarhassa —
minulla oli viitta ylläni ja istuin tupakoimassa — kun madame tuli ulos
kuin haamu, näkemättä minua, ja hiipi pimeässä talliin päin.
Epäröitsin hetkisen ja sitten seurasin häntä. Hän käveli pitkin tietä Ja
kääntyi tallin taakse, enkä vielä nähnyt mitään outoa hänen
käytöksessään; mutta sitten ehdittyään vasemman siipirakennuksen
taakse hän meni polkua myöten pensaikon läpi takaisin talon
itäpuolelle ja tuli siten uudestaan puutarhaan. Senjälkeen hän astui
käytävää ylöspäin, meni sisälle salin ovesta ja hävisi, kierrettyään
talon ympäri kertaakaan seisahtamatta tai sivulleen vilkaisematta!
Myönnän olleeni kovin ihmeissäni. Istuuduin taas penkille, josta olin
lähtenyt, ja huomasin päässeeni kerrassaan niukkaan tulokseen.
Olin varma siitä, ettei hän ollut vaihtanut sanaakaan kenenkään
kanssa. Yhtä varma olin siitä, ettei hän ollut havainnut minun
seuranneen häntä. Minkätähden hän oli sitten tehnyt tämän
kummallisen kävelyn, yksin ilman suojelijaa, tuntia jälkeen pimeän
tulon? Ei yksikään koira ollut haukkunut, ei ainoatakaan ihmisolentoa
ollut näkynyt; hän ei ollut edes pysähtynyt kuuntelemaan kuin
odottaen tapaavansa jonkun. Tosiaan en voinut käsittää tätä. Enkä
päässyt lähemmäksi ratkaisua, vaikka makasin valveilla kokonaisen
tunnin pitempään kuin tavallisesti.
Seuraavana päivänä ei kumpainenkaan nainen tullut alakertaan

päivälliselle, ja sitten kuulin, että mademoiselle ei voinut oikein hyvin.
Yksinäisen aterian jälkeen — nyt kaipasin heitä enemmän kuin olisin
luullut — lähdin sentähden mielipaikalleni ja vaivuin mietteisiini.
Päivä oli kaunis ja puutarha miellyttävä. Siinä istuessani ja

katsellessani vanhanaikaisia ruoholavoja, hengittäessäni entisten
aikojen tuoksua ilmassa ja tummien puurivien rajoittaessa näköalaa
kummaltakin puolen, olisin voinut uskoa, etten ollut viipynyt poissa
Pariisista kolmea viikkoa, vaan kolme kuukautta. Hiljaisuus verhosi
minut, joka taholta. Olisin voinut kuvitella, etten milloinkaan ollut
rakastanut mitään muuta. Metsäkyyhkyset kuhertelivat
hiljaisuudessa; silloin tällöin kuului närhin kimakka ääni. Kello saattoi
olla yhden tienoissa päivällä, ja oli hyvin lämmin. Luullakseni
torkahdin.
Äkkiä, kuin unessa, näin Clonin kasvojen kurkistavan minuun salin

ovelta. Hän vetäytyi heti takaisin, ja sitten kuulin kuisketta. Ovi
pantiin hiljaa kiinni. Kohta oli taas kaikki hiljaista.
Mutta nyt olin täysin valveilla ja ajattelin. Talon asukkaat tahtoivat

nähtävästi varmistautua siitä, että minä nukuin ja olin poissa tieltä.
Yhtä selvää oli, että minun piti olla saapuvilla. Taipuen kiusaukseen
nousin penkiltä, kumarruin eteenpäin, jottei minua voinut nähdä
ikkunoista, ja hiivin rakennuksen itäisen pään ohi seinän ja
punakataja-aidan välitse. Siellä oli kaikki rauhallista; pidin edelleen
tarkoin silmällä ympäristöäni ja menin ympäri talon, samaa tietä,
vaikka päinvastaiseen suuntaan, kuin madame oli kävellyt edellisenä
iltana, kunnes jouduin tallin taakse. Olin tuskin sekuntia seissyt siinä
tähystellen, kun kaksi henkilöä tuli ulos tallirakennuksesta. Ne olivat
madame ja portinvartija.
He seisoivat tovin ulkopuolella, katsellen ympärilleen. Sitten

madame sanoi jotakin miehelle, ja tämä nyökkäsi vastaukseksi.
Madame erosi hänestä, ja mies jäi seisomaan paikalleen, madamen
mennessä ruohikon yli kevein askelin, kunnes hävisi puiden sekaan.
Vakuutettuna siitä, että hän oli menossa kohtaamaan miestänsä,

jota minun läsnäoloni esti saapumasta linnaan, aavistin nyt, että
ratkaiseva hetki oli vihdoinkin tullut, ja kiihdyin askel askeleelta yhä
enemmän. Minua inhotti vakoilla madamea; tämä tehtäväni kiusasi ja
kuohutti mieltäni. Mutta juuri sentähden, että vihasin sitä, olin
innokas suoriutumaan siitä, onnistumaan yrityksessäni, sulkemaan
korvani ja poistumaan seudulta. Kun hän sitten saapui pyökkimetsän
reunaan ja astui pienelle aukiolle, näyttäen epäröivän, hiivin vielä
varovammin eteenpäin. Tämä kaiketi oli kohtauspaikka, ajattelin ja
nyt seisahduin ja kurkistin varovasti, nähdäkseni milloin herra de
Cocheforêt ilmestyisi tiheiköstä.
Mutta sitä hän ei tehnyt, ja vähitellen kiirehti madame askeleitaan.

Hän meni pikku ahon poikki ja siirtyi leveälle sivutielle, joka oli
raivattu matalaan ja sankkaan leppä- ja vaivaistammimetsään. Tämä
kasvoi niin tiheässä, ja sen seassa versoi niin runsaasti
pähkinäpensaita, seljoja ja puksipuita, että oksat loivat miltei
läpipääsemättömän kahtatoista jalkaa korkean muurin molemmin
puolin tietä.
Nyt en odottanut pitempään. Juoksin niin hiljaa ja kevyesti kuin

suinkin pitkin vihreätä käytävää. Aurinko paistoi sinne, puut
tukahduttivat tuulen henkäilyn kokonaan ja minua hikoilutti helle ja
kiire. Mutta sammal oli pehmeää, maaperä hiukan kaltevaa, ja vähän
enemmän kuin minuutin kuluttua olin käytävän päässä. Vähän
matkaa käänteestä seisahduin ja katselin varovasti eteenpäin,
nähdäkseni minne hän oli mennyt.
Näin edessäni vielä toisen ratsastustien, edellisen kaltaisen, ja

madame oli jo edennyt noin sataviisikymmentä askelta sitä myöten
viheriäisten pensasaitojen välitse. Seisoin siinä huohottaen ja kirosin
metsää, kuumuutta ja madamen varovaisuutta. Me olimme varmasti
kävelleet jo lieuen tai vähintään kaksi kolmasosaa lieueta. Kuinka
kauas mies tahtoi saadakaan vaimonsa tapaamaan häntä? Minua
alkoi suututtaa. Kaikella on rajansa, mutta tämä metsä näytti
ulottuvan Espanjaan asti!
Nyt hän taas poikkesi ja katosi, ja minun täytyi uudistaa temppuni.

Tällä kertaa luulin varmasti näkeväni jotakin ihan toista. Mutta ei!
Taaskin kaivautui vihreä ratsastuskuja metsän uumeniin,
pensasseinämien milloin vaalein, milloin tummin värivivahduksin
loistellessa aina sen mukaan, missä määrin pähkinäpensaat ja seljat
tai orapihlajat, marjakuuset ja puksipuut olivat enemmistönä, mutta
aina korkeina, jäykkinä ja läpipääsemättöminä. Noin puolitiessä
käytävää näin madamen samoavan eteenpäin tasaisin askelin,
ainoana liikkuvana olentona, mitä oli näkyvissä. Ihmettelin,
pysähtelin ja hänen kadotessaan seurasin perässä — mutta
ainoastaan havaitakseni, että hän oli poikennut toiselle vähän
kapeammalle, mutta muutoin samanlaiselle polulle.
Ja sitä menoa jatkui puoli tuntia. Toisinaan kääntyi madame

oikealle, toisinaan vasemmalle. Sokkelolla ei näyttänyt olevan
loppua. Pari kertaa arvelin, että hän oli kenties eksynyt ja koetti vain
löytää takaisin kotiinsa, mutta hänen varma ryhtinsä ja säännölliset
askeleensa todistivat toista. Sen myöskin huomasin, että hän
harvoin katsoi taaksensa tai sivulleen. Eräällä kohdalla eivät tietä,
jota pitkin hän käveli, kattaneet vihreät lehvät, vaan jonkun
kiertokasvin hopean valkeat, kiiltävät lehdet, joiden kimmellys etäältä
näytti iltahohteessa heijastuvalta vedenkalvolta. Kun hän astui sille
taipaleelle, laskevan auringon valaistessa hänen kasvojaan, sai
hänen pitkä harmaa hahmonsa puhtauden leiman, joka
silmänräpäykseksi hämmästytti minua — hän näytti yliluonnolliselta
olennolta. Minä laskettelin pitkiä sadatuksia ja olin katkeroittunut
itseäni kohtaan, mutta seuraavassa mutkassa sain palkkioni, Hän ei
samonnut enää eteenpäin. Näin hänen pysähtyneen ja istuutuneen
kaatuneelle puunrungolle tien viereen.
Seisoin tuokion piiloutuneena ja pidin häntä silmällä, käyden hetki

hetkeltä kärsimättömämmäksi. Aloin lopulta johtua kummallisiin
ajatuksiin. Vihreät seinämät verhoutuivat hämyyn. Aurinko oli
laskemaisillaan; suippo, valkoinen vuorenhuippu, joka usean
peninkulman päässä sulkien näköalan tieltä, alkoi punoittaa ja
hehkua. Vihdoin, minun jo käytyäni levottomaksi, hän nousi ja jatkoi
vaellustaan verkallisemmin askelin. Odotin kuten tavallisesti; kunnes
hän oli hävinnyt seuraavan polvekkeen taakse. Sitten kiirehdin
hänen jälkeensä, ja kun varovasti käännyin kulmasta — seisoin
kasvoista kasvoihin häntä vastassa.
Käsitin silmänräpäyksessä kaikki — että hän oli viekoitellut minut,

pettänyt minut, tahallaan toimittanut minut pois. Hänen kasvonsa oli
viha vaalentanut, hänen silmänsä leimusivat, ja hänen ruumistaan
värisytti mielenkarvaus ja rajaton halveksiminen.
»Vakooja!» huusi hän. »Koira! Te — aatelismies! Voi, hyvä

Jumala! Jos te olette yksi meistä — jos te ette todellakaan kuulu la
canailleen, niin saamme vielä kalliisti maksaa tästä! Saamme
katkerasti sovittaa sen vastedes. Minä en uskonut», jatkoi hän, ja

Minä sopersin jotakin — en tiedä mitä. Hänen sanansa polttivat

sydäntäni. Jos hän olisi ollut mies, niin hän olisi pian maannut
kuolleena jaloissani.
»Luulitte harhaannuttaneenne minut eilen», pitkitti hän matalalla

äänellä, mutta lieventämättä sitä ylenkatsetta ja suuttumusta, joka
vapisutti hänen huuliaan ja teki hänen äänensä niin hehkuvan
teräväksi. »Te vehkeilijä! Te kavala teeskentelijä! Luulitte, että oli niin

»Madame», sanoin käheästi ja samalla tunsin kasvojeni käyneen
tuhkanharmaiksi, »ymmärtäkäämme toisiamme oikein…»
»Jumala varjelkoon siitä!» huudahti hän heti. »Niin en tahdo

itseäni tahria!»
»Hyi, madame», sanoin vapisevalla äänellä. »Mutta te olette

nainen. Tuo olisi maksanut miehelle hänen henkensä.»
Hän nauroi katkerasti.
»Olette oikeassa», vastasi hän, »minä en ole mies, ja että te

olette, siitä saatte kiittää Jumalaa. Mutta minä en ole myöskään
'madame'. Madame de Cocheforêt on viettänyt tämän ehtoopäivän
— teidän poissaolonne ja typeryytenne ansiosta — miehensä

tuttavuutemme on lopussa tästä silmänräpäyksestä alkaen,
herraseni. Kun vielä tapaamme — jos koskaan tapaamme, mistä
Jumala varjelkoon!» lisäsi hän säkenöivin silmin, »ette rohkene
puhutella minua, sillä silloin annan tallirenkien ruoskia teidät.

ainoatakaan kertaa! Ensi yön saatte viettää majatalossa. Kukaan ei
saa sanoa», jatkoi hän ylpeästi, »että Cocheforêtit rankaisevat
kavallusta vieraanvaraisuuden epäämisellä ja minä annan käskyn
siitä. Mutta huomisaamuna on teidän, lähdettävä takaisin isäntänne
luo, suomittu kylänrakki… vakooja, kehno raukka!»

Hyvitys
Yksin ja raivosta kiehuen! Jos hän olisi vain syytänyt kaikki nämä
soimaukset silmilleni sinä hetkenä, jolloin minä olisin saavuttanut
voittoni, — jos hän olisi hävinneenä lopuksi sanonut sen, mitä nyt oli
sanonut, kun hän itse oli voittanut, niin olisin voinut kestää sen. Jos
hän olisi silloin häväissyt minua, niin olisin niellyt häpeän ja antanut
hänelle anteeksi. Mutta nyt seisoin lisääntyvässä hämärässä,
pimenevien pensasseinämien välissä, pettyneenä, satimeen saatuna
ja voitettuna! Naisen nujertamana! Hän oli pannut
teräväjärkisyytensä minun oveluuttani vastaan, naisellisen
tahdonvoimansa minun kokemustani vastaan, ja hän oli päässyt
voitolle. Ja miten hän olikaan nöyryyttänyt minut! Kun ajatuksissani
haudoin kaikkea tätä ja myöskin aloin oivaltaa etäisempiäkin
seurauksia sekä kuinka täydellisesti hänen menettelytapansa oli
tehnyt mahdottomaksi omien suunnitelmieni kehittymisen mihinkään
suotuisaan tulokseen, vihasin häntä todella.
Niin kuohuksissani kuin olinkin, olisi minun toki tunnin kuluttua

pitänyt olla tyyntynyt. Mutta kun aioin lähteä kotimatkalle, jouduin
uudelleen raivoihini, sillä nyt muistin, etten voinut löytää tietä ulos
siitä sokkelosta, johon hän oli minut houkutellut; se ja sittemmin
sattuneet vastukset pitivät raivoani vireillä. Runsaan tunnin harhailin
ympäri metsää; tiesin kyllä, missäpäin kylä oli, mutta en kyennyt
tapaamaan suoraa tietä sinne. Aina kun kehnosti onnistuneen
yrityksen jälkeen taas seisoin jonkun läpipääsemättömän tiheikön
edessä, olin kuulevinani hänen nauravan sen sisältä, ja tämä
häpeällinen rangaistus ja se pakko, johon pulmallinen asemani
vangitsi raivoni, oli vimmastuttaa minut järjiltäni. Usein kompastelin
pimeässä ja nousin noituen; käteni revin orjantappuroihin ja tahrin
vaatteeni, joita jo oli niin pahoin pidelty muutamia päiviä takaperin.
Lopulta, kun jo olin melkein tyytynyt siihen ajatukseen, että minun
täytyi viettää yöni metsässä, sain näkyviini tulia kylästä ja suuntasin
kulkuni niitä kohti, vapisten innostuksesta ja vihasta. Muutaman
minuutin kuluttua olin kylän raitilla.
Majatalon valot tuikkivat vain pienen matkan päässä minusta,

mutta ennen kuin voin näyttäytyä edes siellä, täytyi minun ylpeyteni
vaatimuksesta hiukan siistiä pukuani. Niinpä pysähdyin ja aloin
raapia ja puistella vaatteitani ja samalla tein kaikkeni omaksuakseni
huolettoman sävyn. Sitten menin ovelle ja koputin. Melkein samassa
silmänräpäyksessä huusi isännän ääni sisältä: »Astukaa sisään,
monsieur!»
Kohotin säppiä ja astuin tupaan. Mies oli yksinään; hän istui
kumartuneena tulen yli ja lämmitteli käsiään. Rautainen pata porisi
hiilloksella. Minun tullessani hän nosti kantta ja kurkisti pataan. Sitten
hän vilkaisi minuun olkansa yli.
»Odotitte minua?» sanoin uhkamielisesti, mennessäni lieden

ääreen ja nostaessani toisen märän saappaani halkojen päälle.
»Niin tein», vastasi hän nyökäten. »Illallisenne on juuri valmis.

Ajattelin teidän saapuvan näihin aikoihin.»
Hän irvisteli niin sanoessaan, ja vaivoin sain kiukkuni hillityksi.
»Onko mademoiselle de Cocheforêt sanonut teille», kysyin

välinpitämättömäksi tekeytyen, »missä olin?»
»On, mademoiselle… tai madame», vastasi hän taas virnistäen.
Hän oli siis kertonut tuolle miehelle, minne hän oli minut jättänyt ja
miten hän oli minut pettänyt! Hän oli tehnyt minut koko kylän
naurunaiheeksi! Raivoni leimahti uudestaan sitä ajatellessani, ja
nähdessäni miehen ilkkuvat kasvot kohotin nyrkkini.
Mutta hän luki uhkauksen silmistäni ja ponnahti vikkelästi

jaloilleen, muristen ja käsi veitsen päätä tapaillen.
»Älkää tehkö sitä toistamiseen, monsieur!» huusi hän rumalla

murteellaan. »Minulla on vielä haava päässäni. Nostakaa kätenne
kerran vielä, niin minä viillän teidät kuin tapetun sian!»
»Istuutukaa, pölkkypää», sanoin minä. »Ei ole aikomuksenani

tehdä teille mitään pahaa. Missä on vaimonne?»
»Työssään.»
»Hänenhän pitäisi laittaa illalliseni pöytään», huomautin.
Hän nousi vastahakoisesti, haki lautasen ja kaatoi siihen

kaalisoppaa. Sitten hän meni kaapille ja otti sieltä ruisleivän ja tuopin
viiniä, vieden ne pöytään.
»Tässä sen näette», sanoi hän lyhyeen.
»Huono vastaanotto», vastasin.
»Ei, kuulkaas nyt, hyvä herra!» mutisi hän kiukkuisesti. »Saatte

olla tyytyväinen! Minulla on omat epäluuloni. Ja jollei armollinen neiti
olisi antanut käskyä, iskisin puukon nahkaanne tänä iltana. Saisitte
maata ulkona ettekä täällä sisällä, ja minä luulen, ettei kukaan surisi
teitä. Mutta tämän nyt saatte pitää hyvänänne. Pitäkää suunne kiinni,
ja kun huomenna käännätte selkänne Coeheforêtille, niin menkää
kerrassaan älkääkä ikinä palatko.»
»Tyhmyyksiä!» sanoin, mutta myönnän olleeni hiukan

tyrmistyksissäni.
»Uhkaukset eivät merkitse mitään, niistä huolimatta voi elää kauan.»
»Pariisissa ehkä», tokaisi hän merkitsevästi, »mutta täällä ei.»
Sitten hän oikaisi vartensa suoraksi, nyökkäsi ja meni takaisin

tulen ääreen; minä kohautin olkapäitäni, aloin syödä ja olin
unohtavinani hänen läsnäolonsa. Liedellä paloivat halot synkästi
eivätkä valaisseet ollenkaan. Viheliäinen öljylamppu, joka levitti
aaveellisia varjoja yli huoneen, teki pimeyden vain vielä
tuntuvammaksi. Matalakattoinen pirtti, jonka permanto oli tiiviiksi
tallattua multaa ja jossa oli likaisia vaatekappaleita viskeltyinä hujan
hajan, löyhkäsi valkosipulille ja pilaantuneelle, huonolle ruualle.
Ajattelin Cocheforêtin linnan valoisaa salia, hauskasti katettua
pöytää, sen rauhallisuutta ja tuoksuvia ruukkukasveja; ja vaikka olin
liian vanha soturi menettääkseni ruokahaluni pesemättömän lusikan
takia, tunsin kuitenkin muutoksen ja panin sen mademoisellen tiliin.
Isäntä katseli minua salavihkaa lieden äärestä, arvasi ajatukseni ja

nauraa virnisteli itsekseen.
»Hieno ruoka, hieno käytös!» jupisi hän halveksivasti. »Pane

mieronkiertäjä hevosen selkään, niin hän ratsastaa — takaisin
kapakkaan!»
»Suu kiinni», vastasin vain, muljauttaen häneen vihaisen katseen.
»Oletteko lopettanut?» kysyi hän.
Pian nousin välittämättä vastata hänelle, menin lieden luo ja vedin

likomärät saappaat jalastani. Hän vei heti leivän ja viinin kaappiin,
tuli sitten takaisin noutamaan lautasta, jota olin käyttänyt, otti sen,
avasi huoneen takaoven, meni ulos ja jätti sen longalleen. Ovesta
tullut veto liehutteli lampun liekkiä ja teki likaisen, pimeän huoneen
yhä kolkomman näköiseksi. Nousin suutuksissani ja menin ovelle
lyödäkseni sen kiinni.
