9th Core Writing Assignments


The following assignments follow the writing process: pre-writing, revising, editing, reflection and selfassessment. Autobiographical narrative: (WA 2.1 a e) 2 - 4 pages Research paper (WA 2.3 a-f) 2 -3 pages; 2 sources (1 database: no wikipedia); works cited Signal phrases, thesis, essential question / prompt, parenthetical citations, third-person Business letter (WA 2.5 a d)

9th Core Writing Mechanics & Conventions


Grading Period 1 Parts of speech: (WC 1.1) Clauses, subjects and predicates (WC 1.1) MLA Format (basic) (WC 1.5) Grading Period 2 Sentence types: simple, compound, complex, compound-complex (WC 1.2) Phrases: sentence openers (prepositional, adverbial, etc.), appositives (WC 1.3) Punctuation: conventions for sentence types and phrases (WC 1.4) Grading Period 3 Parallel structure: (WC 1.2) Punctuation: colon, semi-colon, comma (WC 1.4) Common final on conventions and formatting Grading Period 4 Review of grammar (WC 1.1 1.4) STAR review questions Grading Period 5 Review of grammar (WC 1.1 1.4) Apostrophe: possession and contraction (omission) Grading Period 6 Review of grammar (WC 1.1 1.4) Common final on syntax, conventions, and formatting (will be given to sophomores in Fall)

12th Core Writing Mechanics & Conventions

11th & 12th grade standards require students to demonstrate control of grammar, diction, and paragraph and sentence structure, and an understanding of English usage. (WC 1.1) Semester 1 & 2 MLA Format: interviews, research papers, databases, diverse in-text citation, works cited. Sentence variety: declarative, complex, compound-complex, and transitions. Phrases: participial, gerund, appositives, parallelism. Precision: rhetorical strategies, primary and secondary sources, analogy. Punctuation: semi-colon, colon, dashes, hyphen, ellipses, etc. MLA citation. Outlining and Annotation: tools & methods of outlining, MLA format annotation.
