D. Discussing new concepts Review the basic definition of Hazard and Disaster.
and practicing new skill  Hazard - A dangerous phenomenon, substance, human activity or condition that may cause loss of life, injury or other health impacts, property damage, loss of
livelihoods and services, social and economic disruption, or environmental damage.
#1  Disaster - A serious disruption of the functioning of a community or a society involving widespread human, material, economic, or environmental losses and impacts
which exceeds the ability of the affected community or society to cope using its own resources.
(Risk - the possibility that something bad or unpleasant (such as an injury or a loss) will happen (Merriam-Webster)

Activity: Understanding Disaster Risk Factors: (Building background knowledge protocol)

 Ask the learners to write what they know about the topic in the space provided for them in their module.
 Ask the learners to create a web or visualization of their collective knowledge/understanding of the topic on a paper provided for them inside their module.
 An article will be provided on the topic that will engaged the learners interest and will offer solid introduction to the topic an most of all provides multiple perspectives.
Exposed: Why Vanuatu is the world's most 'at-risk' country for natural hazards (http:// www.dw.com/en/exposed-why-vanuatu-is-the-worlds-most-at-risk-
country-for-natural-hazards/ a-18319825)

Let the learners answer the guide questions.

1. Are there any similarities with Vanuatu’s and Philippines situation when it comes to natural hazards?
2. What are the differences?
3. What factors define disaster risk?
4. What is it like to read successive, multi-perspective articles.
5. Do you know much about the topic before?
6. Have you been curious about the topic?

E. Discussing new concepts Reveal to the learners the complete World Risk Index Map.
and practicing new skill
#2
Discuss the nature of Risk =

When applied to disasters: Disaster Risk = Exposure to natural or man-made hazards x vulnerability

Summarize with
“Disasters are often described as a result of the combination of:
I. The exposure to a hazard;
II. The conditions of vulnerability that are present, and;
III. Insufficient capacity or measures to reduce or cope with the potential negative consequences.”
DISCUSSION:
Disaster Risk factors are variables that either aggravate or mitigate the effects of hazards, affecting the degree or scope of a disaster. (1) Physical factors would pertain to
tangible objects or infrastructure, like the availability of fire exits, or the sturdiness of the building, or the presence or absence of objects that can harm you or help you, etc.
(2) Psychological factors include state of mental capacity and health (e.g. are we dealing with babies? Kids? Adults? People with special needs?), perception of self (e.g. self-
assessment of capability to respond to disasters, fear), etc.
(3) Socio-cultural factors include religion, social status, traditions, perception by society, etc.
(4) Economic factors include assets and liabilities, income, economic class, etc.
(5) Political factors include government structure, diplomatic issues, etc.
(6) Biological factors include flora and fauna in environment, health, diseases, etc.
F. Developing mastery  From the discussion, ask the learners to write an essay about how the risk factors concern them personally. They should try to identify. The learners will choose for
each category of disaster risk factor.
I. Physical,
II. Psychological,
III. Socio-cultural,
IV. Economic,
V. Political, and
VI. Biological risk factors that either affect or not affect them.
 Each learner should come up with a summary of each category addressing the following key points:
 I. Definition for the category
 II. Examples that of factors that directly affect them and possible effects
 III. Examples of factors that might not necessarily affect them
 IV. Ways to address the factors to be ready for disasters

G. Finding practical
applications of concepts
and skills in daily living
H. Making generalization
and abstractions about
the lesson
I. Evaluating learning Evaluation:
1. Explain the concepts of disaster and disaster risk. Using the guide points
Guide points:
i. The equation for risk.
ii. II. The complexity of evaluating disaster risk
iii. Addressing issues one at a times vs all at the same time
iv. The relevance of this subject
2. Differentiate at least two disaster risk factor.
