What are your big dreams in life? Perhaps your goal is to have a perfect body,
complete a marathon, or become a best-selling author. However, despite having a
strong will to achieve these goals, you may find yourself giving up after just a few
days.
Most of the time, we focus on our big goals. Big goals are easy to . We
can imagine ourselves feeling satisfied in front of the mirror, smiling at the finish
line, or singing our books for our fans. These big goals give us direction and
purpose in our daily lives. However, you should be careful that you don’t bite off
more than you can chew. Rather than helping us, big goals can tempt us to make
unrealistic changes to our lives.
To attain your goal, you should focus on changing your lifestyle, not changing
your life. For instance, writing a best-selling novel would be life-changing; practicing
creative writing for ten minutes every day would be a new type of lifestyle.
Hello, I'm Edward and I'm a nutritionist. Let me ask you a question. This special
drink will help you reduce stress, increase energy, and maintain a healthy body
weight. What drink am I talking about? In fact, this magical drink is something ①
that you all know. It’s water! Do you also want to have nice skin? Drink water.
Water is nature’s own beauty cream. Drinking water hydrates skin cells, giving your
skin a healthy glow. Likewise, water is very important for basic body functions
because about 70% of our body ② are water, and we need about 2 liters of water a
day. However, many of us don’t get enough water and eventually experience
dehydration. For this reason, we have to drink plenty of water.
So how can we increase our water intake? First of all, I suggest that you replace
sugary intake such as soft drinks and juice with water. This will reduce your sugar
intake and help you feel ③ full. You can also increase your water intake by eating
more fruits and vegetables. Because these foods contain a great deal of water, they
can provide up to 20% of the water your body needs each day. ④ In case you get
thirsty between meals, you can carry a water bottle with you. You can also flavor
your water with fruits or herbs to enjoy it more. Remember, drinking lots of water
will help you look and feel better.
Hummingbirds are the smallest bird in the world. These birds are easily
recognized due to their special hovering movement and colorful feathers. They flap
their wings so fast they make a humming noise, which is why they are
called hummingbirds. Scientists have found that hummingbirds have unique, fast
wing strokes, which allow them to fly forward, backward, sideways, and even to stop
in midair. Although they are small, they can fly up to 54 kilometers per hour. They
are also talented at staying in one place like a bee. How is that possible? They can
flap their wings in a figure-8 pattern, which enables them to hover. As they hover,
they use their long tongues to take sweet liquid from flowers. Their one weakness is
their feet. Because they fly so much, they have poorly developed feet, which cannot
be used to walk.

Rousseau is best known for his paintings about jungles and animals even though
he never saw a jungle, or even left France. His knowledge of tropical plants and
animals came mainly from the botanical gardens and zoos of Paris, as well as from
academic sculptures and wildlife pictures. Rousseau once described his frequent
visits to the botanical gardens as follows: “When I go into the glasshouses and I see
the strange plants of exotic lands, it seems to me that I enter a dream.” He also
met with soldiers who had fought in the jungles of Mexico, and he listened to the
stories of these men to gain inspiration for his jungle paintings.
His first jungle-themed work was Tiger in a Tropical Storm, which shows a tiger
preparing to jump on its prey in the middle of a raging thunderstorm. It was
exhibited in 1891, and resulted in Rousseau’s first serious review. Felix Vallotton, a
fellow artist and critic, wrote: “His tiger surprising its prey ought not to be missed;
it’s the alpha and omega of painting.” However, the uniqueness of Rousseau’s style
– the exaggerated scale, simplified forms, and blocks of vivid color – provoked
mixed reactions.

How can you tell that spring is on the way? Buds appearing on the trees, birds
singing, and days getting longer – these are all signs. Some of you might simply notice
spring because this is the time when your allergies get worse. Whatever the case, if
you’ve noticed one of these things, you’ve already been practicing (A) phenology.
Phenology can be considered nature’s calender. It is the study of seasonal and cyclical
changes in plants and animals, like the flowering of plants, or the migration of birds. ( ①
) The timing of these events is directly impacted by the local weather and climate, such
as sunlight, temperature, and rainfall. ( ② ) For instance, firefighters or emergency
responders have an interest in using phenology to determine where and when the fire
season will begin. Farmers also use phenology by observing plants and insects in order to
decide the best time to use pesticides on their crops. ( ③ )
Do you want to try your hand at phenological observation? All you need is a journal,
a pencil, and good eyes to observe the details of what is going on in your natural
surroundings. ( ④ )

A red curtain slowly opens. Rows of little screens, showing people of all ages and
colors, fill the stage against a dark background. In the center appears a man. He soon
begins conducting and disappears. Then the singing images move slowly to the music.
Some of them are zoomed in to show different faces. There is neither an orchestra nor
an audience. The singers have never met each other or practiced together. Yet a song
called “Lux Aurumque” is performed by a beautiful mix of voices. This is a “virtual
choir.”
The virtual choir was Eric Whitacre’s idea. One day in 2009, Whitacre was told by a
friend about a young fan. She had videoed herself singing the soprano part of his
“Sleep” and posted it for him online. In the video, her voice sounded sweet and
pure. Inspired by the video, Whitacre decided to make a virtual choir. He thought, “If I
can get 50 people to sing their parts and post their videos, I can put them together
and create something beautiful. Those who love to sing don’t have to be in the same
place to perform a choral work together.” Whitacre soon sent out a call to his online
fans and asked them to record themselves singing and upload their videos, and this
was the beginning of the virtual choir.
12. 윗글의 뒤에 이어질 내용으로 가장 적절한 것은?
① How Whitacre’s young fan videoed the soprano part of “Lux Aurumque”
② Why singers should meet each other when they prepare the virtual choir
③ Why the virtual choir should not replace the offline choir
④ How Whitacre’s idea of the virtual choir finally became a reality

The Eastgate Centre is an office building and shopping complex in Harere, Zimbabwe.
Built in 1996, it might not be visually impressive, but it is an excellent example of (A)
biomimicry. Due to the hot climate of Harare, air conditioning systems can be very
costly to install, run, and maintain. To solve this problem, the building’s architect, Mick
Pearce, turned to *termite mounds for an alternative.
Termite mounds are large structures built by certain termite species. Scientists
believe that the mounds stay cool due to a constant flow of air. Each mound has a
network of holes referred to as chimneys. It has a large central chimney and smaller
outer chimneys that are close to the ground. The heat generated by the daily activity
of the termites rises up through the central chimney, eventually escaping through the
top of the mound. In the meantime, cooler air is pulled in through the smaller
chimneys, keeping the termites’ home at a comfortable temperature during the hot day.
Also, the soil surrounding the mound absorbs heat in the hot daytime hours.
Therefore, the temperature inside the mound does not increase greatly and stays
relatively cool. At night, when the outside temperature goes down, the heat is finally
released. This process inspired Pearce to design an innovative climate control system.

A hundred years ago, about 230,000 orangutans lived on Earth. Today, fewer than
50,000 are left in the wild, living exclusively on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra.
These islands happen to be ground zero for one of the world’s most controversial and
rapidly growing industries: palm oil.
The cultivation of palm oil is the biggest threat to orangutans. Although their survival
gravely depends on rainforests, people have continuously destroyed rainforests to make
room for the production of palm oil, which in turn has caused thousands of the
animals to die. ( ① ) At this rate, orangutans could become extinct in less than 25
years.
So what exactly is palm oil? You may have never heard of palm oil, but you have
almost certainly come into contact with it, probably multiple times every day. ( ② ) It
can be found in thousands of consumer goods, from packaged foods to hair products.
it is cheaper and more efficient to produce than other vegetable oils, palm oil
is currently used in half of all packaged products.
( ③ ) The consumption of palm oil has rapidly increased in the past two decades.
Although the United States and Europe are its top consumers, demand is growing
throughout the world. Recently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banned
trans fat in foods, which will likely increase the consumption of palm oil. ( ④ ) Though
by no means healthier, palm oil is set to be the “clear alternative” for food producers,
experts say.
Palm oil is a type of vegetable oil that is derived from the palm fruit.
