Bihar Regiment detained a
village volunteer amidst sus-
pected Kuki militant gunfire.
The incident sparked anxiety
and raised concerns among
local residents.
Earlier today, suspected
Kuki militants intermittently
opened fire from the Bonyang
and Kamu sides towards the
Itham Moirangpurel area. The
gunfire created a sense of un-
ease and insecurity among
the inhabitants, prompting
increased security measures
in the vicinity.
In the midst of this height-
ened tension, Bihar Regiment
personnel detained a village
volunteer, triggering further
apprehension within the
community. However, follow-
ing proper verification proce-
dures, the volunteer was sub-
sequently released.
The incident has high-
lighted the ongoing security
challenges faced by the resi-
dents of Itham Moirangpurel
and surrounding areas. Lo-
cal authorities have empha-

18th Lok Sabha will start from

blockade at Chingtham village.
This blockade, initiated imme-
diately after the apprehension,

As night fell, the situation
escalated further when
Khongjom Police unleashed
tear gas at demonstrators
around 10:30 PM, exacerbat-
ing the unrest. Despite official
assertions, the community
adamantly insists that the de-
tained individuals are inno-
cent volunteers committed to
safeguarding their villages
from external threats.
Voicing outrage, residents
denounced the prospect of ci-
vilians facing court appear-
ances. They argue vehemently
against such actions, citing
the volunteers’ pivotal role in
community defense.
Additionally, residents la-
mented the perceived ineffi-
cacy of law enforcement in ad-
dressing recurrent attacks by
Kuki groups. Their demands
echo the immediate and un-
conditional release of the de-
tainees, pledging to sustain
their protest until justice is
served.
As tensions mount and

Leikai condemning bomb attack

Manipur, organized a sit-in pro-
test today to denounce a bomb
attack on Mayanglambam
Biramani’s home. The attack,
which occurred around 8 p.m.
yesterday, has sparked local
outrage and demands for im-
mediate government action.

Brahmapur Nahabam Leikai,
stated, “We all could have been
injured. This is a residential
area.”
Protesters highlighted the
severe risks posed by bomb
attacks in residential areas,
emphasizing how such inci-
dents create widespread fear
and insecurity within the com-
munity. They called on the
state government to take
prompt measures to appre-
hend and penalize the culprits,
emphasizing the necessity of
safeguarding civilians from
such threats.
A trustee and daughter-in-
law of the affected family ex-
pressed shock and distress
over the incident. She re-
counted that the bomb landed
near their courtyard and
stressed that the family had no
known conflicts that might
explain the attack. She ap-
pealed to those responsible to
come forward and disclose
their motives.

described the incident, stat-
ing, “Around 8 p.m., the inci-
dent happened. Children were
around. They were inside the
house at that time fortunately.
At the time, we saw that the
car was on fire.”
Yesterday evening, two
hand grenades were thrown at
the residence of 66-year-old

Brahmapur Nahabam Bamon
Leikai. One grenade deto-
nated, setting a parked vehicle
on fire, while the other failed
to explode. Fortunately, there
were no injuries or casualties

the Impact on the Economy of
Society.” The workshop is
scheduled for June 22 and 23,
2024, and promises to shed
light on the evolving cultural
practices and their broader
economic effects.
This workshop aims to ad-
dress the transformations in
traditional rituals and their
economic implications. Topics
to be discussed include the
significant increase in spend-
ing on rituals such as
Luhongba, Lanna Thouram,
Epaal Thaba, Nahut Nareng/
Nahutpa, and Kumon Firoi,
and their economic impact, as
well as the cultural changes
resulting from these transfor-
mations and the societal reper-
cussions of competition dur-
ing Ningol Chakouba. Speak-
ers will present papers provid-
ing in-depth analysis and in-
sights on these issues.
The announcement fol-
lows a meeting held on June
9, 2024, by five organiza-
tions—SEACO, HERICOUN,
NIPCO, LIPUL, and CCSJ—at
the Press Club, which featured
various cultural activities and
included participation from
numerous organizations and
individuals dedicated to cul-
tural preservation, including
Narendra Ningomba. During
this meeting, resolutions were
made to form an Organising
Committee to oversee the
workshop. Thokchom Ibohal
Meetei, the Custom Secretary
of Uttra Sanglen
Sanakonung, has been ap-
pointed as the Organising
Committee Chairman, with
Paonam Thakaba Meetei of
WAMA designated as the
Convenor of the organizing

The election in Manipur re-
veals a grim cycle of violence
and despair gripping the state.
Reports of poll violence have
surfaced, creating an atmo-
sphere of unrest and fear that
taints the democratic process,
making it appear more like a fa-
cade of representation than a
true reflection of the people’s
will. After yet another chaotic
election, it’s evident that the les-
sons of history have been ig-
nored, leaving genuine change
seemingly out of reach. At the
core of this problem is a deep-
seated resignation to a fate dic-
tated by external forces. The
idea of a “slave mentality” is
widespread, leading to a fatal-
istic acceptance of the status
quo. Despite talk of empower-
ment and self-determination,
the reality is starkly different.
Manipur’s residents feel
trapped in a cycle of oppres-
sion and disillusionment, bur-
dened by apathy and resigna-
tion. Among the states where
the BJP and its NDA alliance
suffered reverses in the Lok
Sabha elections this year are
the northeaster border states of
Manipur, Nagaland and
Mizoram. In Manipur, where the
BJP is in power, both the Inner
Manipur and Outer Manipur
seats were won by Congress
candidates while the lone Lok
Sabha seat in Nagaland, where
an NDA-allied opposition-less
government is in power, was

that “Assam Rifles followed
the modus operandi (adopted

2024 Lok-Sabha Election in Manipur & N.E States

power in the state.
Now let us look at what hap-
pened in Manipur, a state that
has been rocked by an ethnic
conflict for over a year now that
has claimed over 200 lives so far.
On May 3, 2023, violence
erupted between Meitei people,
a majority that lives in the Imphal
Valley, and the Kuki-Zo tribal
community from the surround-
ing hills. According to govern-
ment figures, as of May 3, 2024,
221 people have been killed in
the violence and 60,000 people
have been displaced. Earlier fig-
ures also mentioned over 1,000
injured, and 32 missing. 4,786
houses were burnt and 386 reli-
gious structures were
vandalised, including temples
and churches. Unofficial figures
are higher.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elec-
tions, the Inner Manipur seat
was won by Rajkumar Ranjan
Singh of the BJP while the Outer
Manipur seat was won by
Lorho F Pfoze of the Naga
People’s (NPF), a part of the
NDA. In 2024 though, both the
seats were wrested by the Con-
gress. While the Inner Manipur
seat was won by Angomcha
Bimol Akoijam, the Outer
Manipur seat was clinched by
Alfred Kan-Ngam Arthur. Ac-
cording to K Yhome, Fellow at
the Shillong-based Asian
Confluence think tank, the eth-

elections. This time, there was a
three-cornered contest in the

People’s Democratic Alliance
(PDA) put up Chumben Murry
as a consensus candidate, the

Whereas complaint has been made before me that Shri Doumang
Guite @ Mangboi (then aged 35 years), S/o (L) Thangul Guite
of Yangoubung village, PS Molcham (now residing at D.
Jalenbung village, PO and PS Moreh, Tengnoupal district,
Manipur) has committed (or is suspected to have committed) the
offence punishable under Section 21/29 of the Narcotic Drugs and
Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 and it has been returned to a
warrant of arrest thereupon issued that the said Shri Doumang
Guite @ Mangboi cannot be found, and whereas it has been shown
to my satisfaction that the said Shri Doumang Guite @ Mangboi
has absconded (or is concealing himself to avoid the service of the
said warrant);
Proclamation is hereby made that the said Shri Doumang Guite
@ Mangboi is required to appear before the Court of Special Judge,
NDPS (FTC),Manipur through the court of the Ld. Judicial
