SUMMER ASSIGNMENT, CLASS-XII
SUB-MATHEMATICS, CLASS-XII
1. Let Z be the set of all integers and R be the relation on Z defined as:
R= {(a, b): a, b ∈ Z and a-b is divisible by 5}. Prove that R is an equivalence relation.
Also find the number partitions on Z for the relation R.
2. Let A = {1, 2, 3, ............,9} and R the relation in A X A defined by
(a, b) R (c, d) if a+ b = b+ c for (a, b), (c, d) ∈ A XA . Prove that R is an equivalence
relation .Also obtain the equivalence class for [(2, 5)].
3. Let L be the set of all lines in the plane and R be the relation in L, defined by
R= { ( L1 , L2) : L1 is perpendicular to L2 } .Show that R is symmetric but neither reflexive
nor transitive.
4. Let T be the set of all triangles in a plane with R a relation in T given by
R= {(T 1 , T 2) : T 1 ≅ T 2} . Show that R is an equivalence relation.
5. Let ‘m’ be a given positive integer. Prove that the relation ‘Congruence modulo m’ on
the set Z of integers defined by a≡ b (mod m)⇔(a-b) is divisible by m is an equivalence
relation.
6. Let L be the set of all lines in XY-plane and R be the relation in L defined as
R = {( L1, L2): L1 is parallel to L2 }. Show that R is an equivalence relation. Find the set of
all lines related to the line y= 2x +4.
7. Show that the relation R in the set A= { x : x∈ Z , 0≤ x ≤ 12 } given by
R = {(a, b):| a- b | is divisible by 4} is an equivalence relation. Find the set of all elements
related to 1. Also find the numbers of partitions on A under relation R.
