Metaheuristics: Metaheuristics is a subfield of optimization that involves developing high-


level strategies for solving complex optimization problems. It refers to a set of algorithms and
techniques designed to find good solutions to difficult or impossible problems using exact
mathematical methods.
Metaheuristics are particularly useful when dealing with large-scale problems, where finding an
exact solution can be computationally infeasible or take a very long time. Instead, metaheuristics
search for a near-optimal solution within a reasonable amount of time.
Some examples of metaheuristics algorithms include:
 Genetic algorithms: inspired by natural selection and genetics to find solutions that are
more adapted to their environment.
 Simulated annealing: inspired by the physical process of annealing to gradually reduce
the temperature of the system and find the optimal solution.
 Tabu search: keeps track of previously visited solutions to avoid getting stuck in local
optima.
 Ant colony optimization: inspired by the behavior of ants to find the shortest path
between their nest and a food source.
Metaheuristics are widely used in various fields, including engineering, computer science,
logistics, and finance, among others, to solve problems in areas such as production scheduling,
routing, and portfolio optimization.

Genetic Algorithm: Genetic algorithm is a metaheuristic optimization algorithm inspired by


the process of natural selection and genetics. It is used to find good solutions to optimization
problems that involve searching through a large space of possible solutions.

The genetic algorithm begins by creating a population of potential solutions, called individuals or
chromosomes. Each individual in the population represents a potential solution to the problem.
These individuals are typically encoded as strings of binary digits, but other encoding schemes
are also possible.

The genetic algorithm then applies a series of operations that mimic the process of natural
selection and genetics. These operations include selection, crossover, and mutation.

In the selection operation, individuals that have a better fitness (i.e., a higher quality solution) are
more likely to be selected for reproduction. In the crossover operation, pairs of selected
individuals exchange genetic information to create new offspring. The mutation operation
introduces random changes to the offspring to maintain diversity in the population.
After applying these operations, the genetic algorithm evaluates the fitness of the new

In DE, a population of candidate solutions is evolved over a number of iterations, with each
candidate solution representing a possible solution to the optimization problem. The algorithm
starts with an initial population of candidate solutions, and then generates new candidate
solutions by combining existing solutions through a process called differential mutation.

Differential mutation involves randomly selecting three solutions from the population and

nests by replacing some of the existing ones with eggs laid by other cuckoos.

In a typical memetic algorithm, the population of candidate solutions is first initialized randomly.

component of the algorithm, which is typically based on crossover and mutation operators, is
used to generate new candidate solutions.

Once the new candidate solutions have been generated, the local search component of the

local search.

Krill Herd Algorithm(KHA): Krill Herd Algorithm (KHA) is a metaheuristic

the behavior of krill in their natural habitat, where they swarm and follow a leader in a
coordinated manner.
The Krill Herd Algorithm works by simulating the swarming behavior of krill to optimize a
given objective function. The algorithm starts by randomly initializing a population of krill,
which are represented as points in the search space. Each krill has a position and a velocity,
which are updated in each iteration based on a set of rules.

The behavior of the krill is governed by three main rules: the feeding rule, the swarming rule,
and the following rule. The feeding rule is used to guide the krill towards areas of high food
concentration, which corresponds to regions of the search space with good candidate solutions.
The swarming rule is used to encourage the krill to move towards the center of the swarm, which
promotes cooperation and reduces the chance of the population getting stuck in local optima. The
following rule is used to encourage the krill to follow a leader, which is the best solution found
so far.

In each iteration, the krill are updated based on these three rules, as well as some additional
randomness to promote exploration of the search space. The krill with the best solution is
selected as the leader, and the other krill follow it toward the solution.

The Krill Herd Algorithm has been applied to a wide range of optimization problems, including

However, like many metaheuristic algorithms, the performance of the Krill Herd Algorithm is

Whale Optimization Algorithm: The Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) is a


metaheuristic optimization algorithm that was first proposed in 2016 by Seyedali Mirjalili et al.
The algorithm is inspired by the social behavior and hunting strategies of humpback whales.

The WOA works by simulating the hunting behavior of humpback whales to optimize a given
objective function. The algorithm starts by randomly initializing a population of candidate
solutions, which are represented as positions in the search space. Each solution is also associated
with a fitness value, which indicates how well it performs on the objective function.

The hunting behavior of the whales is governed by three main operators: the search operator, the
encircling operator, and the bubble-net attacking operator. The search operator is used to explore
the search space by moving the whales randomly. The encircling operator is used to converge the

Flower Pollination Algorithm(FPA): The Flower Pollination Algorithm (FPA) is a


metaheuristic optimization algorithm that was first introduced in 2012 by Xin-She Yang. The
algorithm is inspired by the process of flower pollination in plants.

The FPA is a population-based algorithm that simulates the pollination process in flowers to
optimize a given objective function. The algorithm starts by randomly initializing a population of
candidate solutions, which are represented as positions in the search space. Each solution is also
associated with a fitness value, which indicates how well it performs on the objective function.
