TP8: Marshall Test
I. Objective
The Marshall method of asphalt mix design is widely practiced in construction materials
laboratories to select and proportion aggregate and asphalt materials for pavement
construction. This holistic approach to asphalt pavement mix design involves the selection of
mineral aggregate and binder materials, preparation of trial samples, load testing for strength
and flow of materials, and lab tests of material properties
II. Theory
The principal of Asphalt Concrete calculation is applied to the hot bitumen mixture with
granular material (Sand, Gravel) with maximum size of 25 mm. This experiment follows
Marshall method such as:
• Sample reparation
• Determine density
• Test stability and flow
• Analyze density and void
III. Equipment
IV. Procedure
- Density of Absolute: Measure the height, diameter, and weight of the sample in the air
and then we have to weight it in to the water. Take the weight sample to wipe out the
water around the surface then weight it again.
