5. Pour the hot bitumen into the center of the glass, making sure that there is no
bitumen sticking at the top of the pycnometer glass, making the process careful to
prevent the bubble air in the bitumen.
6. Leave out the pycnometer and the bitumen to cool down in the temperature room
and then weigh it as a mass “c”.
7. Fill the pycnometer glass with water, close the cork, and put it in the water at
degrees Celsius for about 30 minutes. Next, clean the pycnometer glass.
8. Weigh the pycnometer again and it is defined as mass “d”.
9. After we have finished the experiment clean the pycnometer and put it dry at a
temperature under 100 degrees Celsius until the bitumen flows out of the
pycnometer glass into the bowl. Clean the pycnometer properly.
V. Calculation.

(a) Pycnometer mass= 46.04g (b)Pycnometer + Water mass= 100.36g

(c) Glass + Asphalt mass= 480.95g (d) Pycnometer + water + asphalt mass= 100.44g

(e) Glass mass = 471.53g

Mass a=46.04g ( Pycnometer)

Mass b=100.36g ( Pycnometer+water)
Mass c=55.46g (Pycnometer+asphalt)
Mass d=100.44g ( Pycnometer+asphalt+water)

So, the specific gravity of the bituminous material test is 1.0085
VI. Conclusion
The specific gravity of pure bitumen is in the range of 0.97 to 1.02. The specific
gravity of tar is approximately 1.20. When the specific gravity is less than 1 it shows
the bitumen is lighter than water and when the value is more than 1 it indicates the
bitumen is heavier than water.
