Preface
Veterinary Dentistry: A Team Approach was written with the entire
general veterinary practice in mind. It is comprehensive, bringing a
practical, working knowledge in veterinary dentistry to the student,
veterinary assistant, receptionist, technician, and veterinarian. The
collaboration of the team is vital to the expansion of services and the
completion of many dental-related tasks, resulting in increasing
related productivity of the laboratory, anesthesia, radiology, dentistry,
hospitalization, pharmacy, and retail departments.
This edition includes an outline at the beginning of each chapter to
give the reader an overview of the chapter contents. Key points and
key terms are listed and should be reviewed before and after reading
the chapter to ensure that the chapter is understood. Worksheets are
provided at the end of each chapter to help the reader retain key
information and improve skill competency. The worksheet answers
appear in a section at the back of the text. The reader will also find an
appendix containing a list of abbreviations. Although this list was
current when the text was published, the American Veterinary Dental
College (AVDC) Nomenclature Committee is continuing to revise this
list. Those studying for Board examinations are urged to visit the
AVDC’s website (www.avdc.org) for the most current list. There is
also an appendix that includes lists of various veterinary dental
equipment and one with AVDC-approved definitions. The reader will
also find a bibliography and a glossary.
I would like to thank all of the technicians with whom I have had
the pleasure to work with in my veterinary dental practice: Jan
Yarslov, Gina Gros de Mange, Karen Thomson, Loretto Jaca, Melinda
Pyle, Lilian Brown, and Lee Figard, as well as practice manager Stacey
Neubert. Thanks to Danielle Frazier at Elsevier for her contributions
to making this a useful text.

Why Veterinary Dentistry?
Just as humans need dental care, animals require veterinary dental
care to maintain overall health. In addition to the discomfort caused
by dental disease, the associated disease processes may cause systemic
problems.
The American Veterinary Dental College defines veterinary
dentistry as a discipline within the scope of veterinary practice that
involves the professional consultation, evaluation, diagnosis,
prevention, treatment (nonsurgical, surgical or related procedures) of
conditions, diseases, and disorders of the oral cavity and maxillofacial
area and their adjacent and associated structures; it is provided by a
licensed veterinarian, within the scope of his/her education, training,
and experience, in accordance with the ethics of the profession and
applicable law. (http://www.avdc.org/Nomenclature/Nomen-
Intro.html)
Dental Anatomy and Dental
Terminology
Communication in veterinary dentistry is as important as
communication in veterinary medicine. Medical records and charts
must be annotated. Dental terminology differs from that of veterinary
medicine because the focus is on the teeth and their relationship to
each other and the mouth.
General Anatomy
To be able to recognize oral disease, technicians and veterinarians
must first understand oral health. After establishing this baseline,
technicians and veterinarians can recognize the changes that occur as
oral disease progresses. Another reason that understanding normal
anatomy is so important is that it helps veterinarians and technicians
select the appropriate technique to use to prevent and treat disease.
For example, without knowing the number of roots that a tooth has,
the practitioner could not extract the tooth.
Types of Heads
Three types of skulls are common: mesaticephalic, brachycephalic,
and dolichocephalic. These words have a common root, cephalic,
which means head.
Mesaticephalic
Mesatic means medium. Mesaticephalic is the most common head
type. Poodles, corgis, German shepherds, Labrador retrievers, and
domestic shorthair cats are typical examples (Fig. 1.1).

kerrassaan mahdotonta oppia "Angst, Axt, Bank, Braut…"
hieno, hohtavan valkea paidanrinta, pitkät kultavitjat, suuret napit
kysyi:
— Valmis!
— Hyvä on!
