Let’s Explore and Discover

Have you been in an argument and wanted to prove a point

to someone? If so, in what way did you convey your stand?
Learning the different parts of conditional statements will
surely help you express your arguments better.

Conditional statements are oftentimes used in an

argument. This argument should fit in together and be
logical.
When having an argument, the thought of the
conditional statement should be convincing. That is, the
If-clause and the main clause should always go together.
Example: If someone is a mother, then they are female.

If you know that someone is a mother that is enough to show that the person is
female. Therefore, being a mother is a sufficient condition on being female. It is not,
however, a necessary condition on being female since being a mother is not a requirement
for being female: you can be female without being a mother.

On the other hand, being female is necessary for being a mother: if someone is not female
they can’t possibly be a mother. Thus, being a mother is a sufficient condition on being a
female and being female is a necessary condition on being a mother.

Therefore, the If-clause is a sufficient condition on the main clause, and the main clause
is a necessary condition on if-clause.

2
Remember that conditional argument follows:
 the truth of If-clause is based on evidence, and
 for main clause to be true, If-clause must be true.

Read the sentence:

You can’t talk loud in the library.

When we are asked to rewrite the sentence above to present an argument it will be like
this:
If you are in the library, you can’t talk loud.

Another example of sentences that present an argument:

Exercising makes us healthy If you exercise, you will be healthy.
If you are exercising, you will be healthy.

Being a guitarist means being a musician. If you are a guitarist, you are a musician.
