Let’s Try
Directions: Read and answer questions carefully. Circle the letter of your answer.

2. The following are needed for a statement to express and argument EXCEPT:
A. Convincing B. Illogical C. Fit in together D. Sufficient
5. Choose the appropriate and logical main clause to complete the sentence:
If you will try harder in your next competition in Palarong Pambansa, _________.

For item numbers 6 to 10 only
Directions: Read the following If-Clause. Match it with the correct Main Clause.
Write the letter of the correct answer on the space provided.
_______6. If my sister and I have enough time A. you would have done better.
tomorrow,
_______7. If you want to learn how to play piano, B. you might catch the early bus.
_______8. If you get there at 6 AM, C. we will come to visit you.
_______9. If you had practiced more, D. we could go camping.
_______10. If the weather is good tonight, E. you have to practice a lot.
If you know that someone is a mother that is enough to show that the person is
female. Therefore, being a mother is a sufficient condition on being female. It is not,
however, a necessary condition on being female since being a mother is not a requirement
for being female: you can be female without being a mother.
On the other hand, being female is necessary for being a mother: if someone is not female
they can’t possibly be a mother. Thus, being a mother is a sufficient condition on being a
female and being female is a necessary condition on being a mother.
Therefore, the If-clause is a sufficient condition on the main clause, and the main clause
is a necessary condition on if-clause.
2
Remember that conditional argument follows:
the truth of If-clause is based on evidence, and
for main clause to be true, If-clause must be true.
When we are asked to rewrite the sentence above to present an argument it will be like
this:
If you are in the library, you can’t talk loud.
Being a guitarist means being a musician. If you are a guitarist, you are a musician.
Let’s Practice
Activity 1
Directions: Read the sentences carefully. Choose the conditional statement that is
properly and logically written based on the given arguments cited below. Put a check
mark (✓) before the correct statement.
1. A person goes out of the house without a face mask during the Covid-19 pandemic.
_____a) If a person goes out of the house without a face mask, he is violating the health
protocol.
_____b) If a person goes out of the house without a face mask, he is going somewhere.

How do you determine if a statement is logical or not?
Let’s Do More
Activity 1
Directions: Complete the conditional statements by choosing the appropriate answer to
complete the argument. Write the answer on the space provided.
Reflect on this…
What is the importance of knowing conditional statements in
arguments?
Let’s Sum It Up
In this lesson, I have learned that conditional statements can be used in an (1)
_________. If-clause and main clause should always go together. The (2)___________ gives
a sufficient condition on the main clause, and the (3)___________ gives a necessary
condition on the if-clause. Just remember that the truth of If-clause is based on (4)
_____________ and for the main clause to be true, if-clause must also be (5) _____________.
