Sally Rachel Cook obtained her PhD in Applied Linguistics in 2019 from Birkbeck
College, University of London. She is an Associate Research Fellow there. She is
committed to deepening knowledge and understanding of multilingualism in asy-
lum seekers and refugees in the context of their rehabilitation. Through her work
she aspires to open up new reflection and discussion on the best means of caring for
such people. Cook’s doctoral research explores the lived-experience of acquiring
and using a second language in the healing journeys of survivors of torture within a
unique London-based therapeutic community. To carry out the project she devel-
oped an innovative methodology integrating Interpretative Phenomenological
Analysis with strategies from ethnography. She has disseminated her research
through publications, workshops with health professionals working with refugees
and at national and international Applied Linguistics conferences. She also took
part in the interdisciplinary Oxford Talks, presenting her research findings in the
seminar entitled ‘Translating Distress’. Cook founded and directed for several years
an English Theatre Workshop in Florence, Italy, and intends to use theatre as a
means for her findings to reach a broader general audience. In 2020 she won the
Harmonious Bilingual Network (HaBilNet) Travel Award to attend the Georgetown
University Round table. Her publications can be found here: https://orcid.

Maar twyffel je? Ka. ’k Vroeg niet of ’t goed is, ’k weet ’et wel:
Maar ’k heb nou juist gien tyd. Joc.

Kam. ’k Bidje, vouw
’t Is mooij ’erymd. Hadie. Joc. Wel ’k heb nog niet begonnen,
Dat was het hoofd nog maar. Kam. Och waarje al ’an de staert!
Jochem.

Kam. Zwyg, zwyg, ’t is dubbeld gek, mal en Poejeet daarby
Te zyn, hadie. Jochem. Neen blyf; nu zal ik aanstonds leezen.
Kam. Wel talmt dan niet te lang. Joch. ’t En hoeft niet veel geprezen,
Het pryst zichzelfs genoeg. Kam. De duvel hael de vent.
Joch. Patientie is goed kruid. Kam. Dat’s wel, maek maer een end.
Jochem leest.
Hier kom ik by zyn eksellentie,
Die trouwen zal het mooijste mensie,
Vol wonderlyke kunst, en scientie,
Bevalligheid en eloquentie.
’k Doe u by deezen advertentie,
Maar geef een weinigje silentie,
Dan zult gy hooren een inventie,
Van elken regel een sententie....

Jochem leest.

Leo, Silvester, Adrianus,
Jupyn, Merkurius, Sileên,
Haal water voor me uit Hippokreen:
Dan zal ik drie voet hooger stappen,
En uit een ander vaatje tappen,
Als eer Homerus heeft gedaan,
En Nazo, Maro of Lukaan;
Dan zal ik van de negen muizen;
Myn vaerzen fyntjes laaten pluizen......
Kam.
Jochem leest.
In de alderoudste Landkronyken,
Staet van geen paar dit paars gelyken;
Want Hector, en Andromache,
En Minos, met Pasiphaë,
Noch Echo, met haar lief Narcissus,
Penelope, en Vorst Ulissus.....
Kam.
Jochem. Ja, he, broerlief, tienmaal meer.
’k Begin nou eerst. Kam. Maer zeg waer toe die quaeje naemen?
Joc. Dat is de sjeu van ’t dicht. Kam.

Joc. ’t Komt zo in ’t rym te pas. Kam.

Myn trekkebekje, myn duifje, myn hoer.
Kam. Hoer? hoer?
Jochem. ’t Komt zo in ’t rym te pas. Kam. Stokslaegen op je kop.
Jochem. ’t Komt zo in ’t rym te pas.
Kamacho geeft Jochem slaagen.
Daer beest, dat’s veur je rijmen.

’k Zal nu Quiteria, myn tweede ziel, ontfangen!
Indien gy kennis droegt, gy zoudt getuigen weezen,
