➢ It is commonly used in limited time, equipment, manpower and facilities.
➢ Winner of each match will continue to play to the next round.
➢ The loser of each match will be eliminated completely.
➢ To get the number of games, subtract 1 from the total number of teams.

Formula: N-1= total number of games.

N represents the total number of teams while 1 is constant.

Single Elimination Tournament with Byes
➢ To get the number of byes, subtract number of teams to nearest multiple of 2. Example,
we have 3 teams and its nearest multiple of 2 is 4, and the nearest multiple of 2 of 5
teams is 8, while the nearest multiple of 2 of 9 teams is 16.
➢ Number of teams that do not require byes are 2, 4, 8, 16, 32…etc
➢ The purpose of bye is to make the diagram complete, but the team assigned as bye has
advantage to proceed to the next round of tournament.
➢ Bye will face the team that won from the first round.
➢ In case of two or more byes, there is a possibility that both teams will face each other in
the second round of tournament.
➢ For the number of teams to play for the first round, subtract number of byes from the
number of competing teams.
