Introduction to

Progression
Definition of a Progression

A progression is a series that advances in a logical and

predictable pattern. Especially one that advances toward some
achievement, is called a progression. In other words, every
term of a progression is defined by a general term (or) n th term,
which is denoted by an.
For example, the nth term of a progression 3, 5, 7, 9, ... is an =
2n + 1. Substituting n = 1, 2, 3, ... here, we get the 1 st, 2nd, 3rd,
.... terms. For example:
• When n = 1, first term = 2(1) + 1 = 3.
• When n = 2, second term = 2(2) + 1 = 5.
• When n = 3, third term = 2(3) + 1 = 7
and so on.

Arithmetic
Progression

An Arithmetic Progression (AP) is a sequence of numbers in

which the difference between any two consecutive terms is
constant. The general form of an AP is a, a +d, a +2d, a +3d,... where a
is the first term and d is the
common difference.
Geometric

A Geometric Progression (GP) is a sequence of numbers in which each
term after the first is obtained by multiplying the preceding term by a
fixed, non-zero number called the common ratio. The general form of a
GP is a, ar, ar^2, ar^3, ... where a is the first term and r is the common
ratio.

Both Arithmetic and Geometric Progressions are
extensively used in finance. APs are used to calculate
simple interest, while GPs are used to model compound
interest and growth rates in investments and loans.
Real-World Examples
From population growth to the depreciation of assets, understanding Arithmetic and Geometric
Progressions is crucial in various real-world scenarios. These mathematical concepts are used to predict
trends and make informed decisions.
Challenges and Exercises
To reinforce learning, it’s essential to practice solving problems related to Arithmetic and Geometric
Progressions. Engaging in challenging exercises will enhance comprehension and application of these
fundamental mathematical sequences.
Exploring Further

The study of Arithmetic and Geometric Progressions extends

beyond the basics covered in this presentation. Exploring advanced
topics such as infinite series, convergence, and divergences can
provide deeper insights into these mathematical sequences.
Example of Maths
Examples of Arithmetic progression

Is a, 2a, 3a, 4a, … an arithmetic The sequence 28, 22, x, y, 4 is an AP.

progression? Find the values of x and y.

Solution: Given sequence: a, 2a, 3a, 4a, … Solution: Given AP: 28, 22, x, y, 4

To check whether the given sequence is AP Here, first term, a = 28

or not, we have to find the common
difference. Common difference, d = 22 – 28 =-6

Hence, d = 2a – a = a Hence, x = 22 – 6 = 16

d = 3a – 2a = a y = 16 – 6 = 10.

d = 4a – 3a = a Hence, the values of x and y are 16 and

10, respectively
Hence, the common difference is “a”

therefore, the sequence a, 2a, 3a, 4a,… is an

arithmetic progression.
Examples of Geometric progression

The number 2048 is which term in the If the first term of a G.P. is 20 and the
following Geometric sequence? common ratio is 4. Find the 5th term.

2, 8, 32, 128, . . . . . . . . . Solution: Given, First term, a=20

Solution: Here a = 2 and r = 4 Common ratio,r=4

nth term G.P is an = arn-1 We know,

The nth term of G.P.,
⇒ 2048 = 2 x ( 4) n-1 an = arn-1

⇒ 1024 =( 4) n-1 ⇒ a5 = 20 44

⇒ ( 4) 5 = ( 4) n-1 = 20 256

⇒n=6 = 5120
Conclusion

Mastering progression [ Arithmetic and Geometric Progressions] is essential for understanding the
fundamental principles of mathematics and their wide-ranging applications. Continual practice and
exploration of advanced concepts will lead to a deeper appreciation of these powerful mathematical
sequences.
