There is enough realism in this picture to obviate the
need of much interpretation. The prosecuting attorney,
with the book of the law in his hand, asks that
judgment be given. He is in no angry mood, but is
merely performing a stern duty. To the right, a wife and
mother pleads that justice be tempered with mercy.
The purpose of this chapter is to show why an army and navy are needed
by the United States; how they are organized; and what they cost.
