Forgotten password [SOLVED]

Forgotten password [SOLVED]

Hello all,

I changed my login password late last night and I have forgotten it.

I rebooted, went out of the room and when I came back in it had booted up and was logged in (weird!) Anyway, before
shutting down, I'd like to change my password. How would I do this, please?

It sounds like you have enabled automatic login for your account. That means the login screen will automatically log you in,
not needing a password. But to change your password you must know your current password. And also to run administrative
actions you must know your password.

If you can't recall the new password you would have to reset your password. You can use these steps:
viewtopic.php?p=2059736#p2059736. If you are using home directory encryption on your account (but I don't think so with
automatic login) you must not use these steps as it will lock you out of your account.



Many thanks - how do i get to the the boot menu and select recovery mode?

If you only have Linux Mint installed, the boot menu is hidden by default. You can hold Shift key after powering on/rebooting
the computer to force the GRUB boot menu to show.



Thank you - I tried that and it doesn't work. The system just boots as normal. I'm using a Dell Optiplex AIO macine, if that
helps?

Holding shift works for legacy boot modes, but for uefi mode you use the esc key instead.

When you see the HP or Lenovo logo, Dell, it's a Dell dude, or whatever it is, you have to wait until that is completely finished
and moving the next boot phase, and then press ESC once. You have a very limited time-window to do it. If you start seeing
the Mint logo then you didn't do it early enough. You might have to retry it a few times until you catch it just at the right
moment.


I found that striking the F2 or ESC key many times, is more successful at catching it to get into BIOS and chose to boot the
ISO stick.
once I see the ASUS logo, it is too late usually, so I repeatedly strike the F2 key and then it asks me for a password, then it
goes to BIOS, and then it allows me to use F8 to bring up a Boot Menu.

once that is managed, and Mint is installed, Grub takes over, and get a menu on boot up now, leave it alone and it boots Mint,
arrow down, and it boots Windows.

Thank you, guys, Esc did the trick and I tapped it after the boot screen. All fixed now using xenopeek's excellent guide. thank
