everything, still did not have one.1 The structure of anthropology, which
was a Western projection and, inside the West, a projection of modernity
on the domestic “pockets” of backwardness, was forced to change because
it was challenged by the increasingly strong quests for pluralism and the
consequent requirement to rethink its very organisation. This change
involved the standard perspective (from above) from which external and
internal others were observed, and a rethinking of the overall epistemol-
ogy that guided its action (theoretically and in the field). In the most
recent debates, these changes were expressed and condensed into a few
lines of reflection; for example, the notion of post-colony (Mbembe,
2021), the pressing quests for restitution (of the artefacts subtracted by
European colonialism) and the notion of ontological turn (rethinking/
overcoming the nature-culture dualism, as well as many other central traits
in Western intellectual history) (Colajanni, 2020; Descola, 2005; Mancuso,
2018, 2020). Such a trajectory marks not only the relationship between
anthropology and its traditional objects of study, in the past as well as in
the present, but also the relationship within the discipline, between cen-
tres and peripheries, between international and local trends (and
influences), and between those who write in English and those who write
in their national languages (Hannerz, 2010).
Let us take a step back. Anthropology is the attempt to produce knowl-
edge and representations of other people. With regard to geographical
spaces and historical times in which worldviews, systems of values and
everyday dimensions of experience took on a form inscribed “in the behav-
iour and memory of living men” (Malinowski, 1978, p. 3), anthropology
created tools, theoretical frameworks and methods in order to constitute
differential discursive fields for focusing on these conceptions, values and
experiences, with an ethical effort to change the very strong attitude of
perceiving certain contexts—with reference to either the exotic other or
the internal other, both of which are marginal, backward and, at best,
