God’s Plan of Salvation : as outlined in the Book of Romans

Trust

Introduction: I prepared this message for last week’s service and Diane an I had a cold and we called
China and out of a abundance of caution we did not preach last week. Our apologies. But when I did
prepare this message : I went to the Lord in Prayer asking that he would open my heart and mind to that
which he would have me share. With that said I still feel it is important to “study the Word of God
together. I have blessed and encouraged by many of you hear who have given me positive affirmation
to me over the last year or so saying to me that they have learned a lot regarding the Bible when I
preach.

What can I say to that but Amen and Amen

– A tidbit of information: Jesus used the phrase “Verily Verily” The word verily in the KJV is actually a
transliteration of a Hebrew word we use often but may not know what it means. Jesus used the phrase
Verily, verily, showing emphasis, 25 times in 25 verses in the Gospels. If you look in the Greek it is
“Amen Amen” Jesus is saying or truly truly or what I am about to tell you is trustworthy, trustworthy

So let us delve into the Word of God today seeking treasure that God has place layer upon layer of
wisdom and knowledge. Sometimes you can find treasure just laying on the ground, others you need to
dig for. Did you know that the largest gold nugget ever found was found in 1869 in Australia and it was
basically laying on top of the ground. That nugget was actually given a name “Welcome Stranger” it
weighted in a 213 pounds and in today,s dollars would be worth $8,190,804.16. But there have been
vast amounts of treasure, I would wager to say, most people had to dig for.

We should take this lesson to our study of Scripture. Yes we can casually read and find truth that is
extremely valuable; but that should not apply ourselves to dig deep into the Word of God. Many

I. Trust the Word

There is a Psalm in the OT that references cherishing the Bible it is Ps 119 in verse

Psa 119:73 JOD. Thy hands have made me and fashioned me: give me understanding, that I may
learn thy commandments.

It this verse the writer states that he may learn God’s commands; in verse 89

Psa 119:89 LAMED. For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.

It says that GOD’s Word is finalized and written in HEAVEN – God has preserved His Word. In Deut
God’s Plan of Salvation : as outlined in the Book of Romans

Deu 31:12-13 Gather the people together, men, and women, and children, and thy stranger that is
within thy gates, that they may hear, and that they may learn, and fear the LORD your God, and
observe to do all the words of this law: (13) And that their children, which have not known any thing,
may hear, and learn to fear the LORD your God, as long as ye live in the land whither ye go over
Jordan to possess it.

We are to read is word before all of the people: men women and children and the stranger that they
may hear and learn and fear the LORD. Fear in the original language is to reverence; to be in awe of
God.

So as we shall continue in our study of the Book of Romans what will God provide us today?

II. Trust not others nor yourselves

Rom 3:7 Paul is defending himself against false teachers who state that Paul has taught lies regarding
God’s grace. We must remember that the Jewish people did not focus on God’s forgiveness being given
but by complete obedience to God’s Word. Now for us who have been given God’s word in written
form and with the mysteries of God being revealed through the New Testament we learn that God has
always provided his grace. These false teachers are saying that Paul’s teachings promote Christian’s to
be sinners because God’s grace will forgive them. So in their logic sin more and receive more grace .

Rom 3:6 God forbid: for then how shall God judge the world?

Rom 3:7 For if the truth of God hath more abounded through my lie unto his glory; why yet am I also
judged as a sinner?

Rom 3:8 And not rather, (as we be slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say,) Let us do
evil, that good may come? whose damnation is just.

This is the prelude to a portion of the Epistle where Paul describes the true condition of the Jews, but
also with the Gentiles –

Rom 3:9 What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews
and Gentiles, that they are all under sin;

Rom 3:10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:

Paul then goes to describe the natural man, (men, women, and children) in vs 11-18 (READ) Is this not us
when we were without Christ?

III. Trust not in your ability to obey the Law

Listen to what Paul states about the law and mankind’s state or condition when living under the law:

Rom 3:19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the
law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.

Rom 3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law
is the knowledge of sin.

• When you are placed under the Law, then the Law you must obey else there are consequences.
Now we need to understand the Law of God is not the Law of mankind – The later is enforced by
other Men and Women. And there are many times we can get by some minor infraction of the
traffic law, going a couple of miles over the speed limit, or failing to use a turn signal at the right
time). We can violate these laws and in many cases not receive punishment for these violations
of the Law. This is not true with the violations of God’s Law – for God is the enforcer of His law
and he knows all things and sees all things. Simply put, we cannot slide one by on God. Also,
God does not have minor violations of His Law. Even though some religious denominations say
that there is : Jesus says something different
o Jas 2:10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is
guilty of all.
• Lets look at verse 19 again. Rom 3:19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it
saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world
may become guilty before God. “that every mouth may be stopped” what does this mean? It
is simple no person is going to argue with Jesus at the judgement they are going to receive for
we are guilty – under the law all the world may become guilty.
o This verse says may become guilty – declaring someone guilty is different than saying
that everyone has sinned, for we have . But there are some who through ignorance –
like the age of accountability won’t be held accountable to that sin.
o Another far more reaching exemption is that someone else will pay for you sin.
• Rom 3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by
the law is the knowledge of sin.
• The law is perfect it is because we cannot keep the law is why the law failed and Jesus came to
earth to save the world.
• We shall see this when we study Romans 8 – but to finalize my point here I will share one verse:
Rom 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his
own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:

Conclusion:

We are going to stop here for now. What do we take away from today’s message? Two main things:

TRUST THE WORD of God

Don’t TRUST

Others or Ourselves

Obedience to the law or your judgment of your own sinlessness – God’s judgment is based on
His Holiness not our own.
